BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTPleasant Hill Winery

Bob and Jeanne Cottle, proprietors of Pleasant Hill Winery, began as home winemakers in the early 1970s making several different fruit wines in their respective states of Rhode Island and Wisconsin. The hobby got “out-of-control” after a move to Texas in 1979. A lovely piece of land with rolling hills was purchased in Brenham in 1992. Planting and building began, and in 1997, Pleasant Hill Winery opened its doors as Texas’ 27th commercial winery. Both families’ grandparents came from Italy and made wine. The Zaffiro winepress, once used for the winemaking, is now proudly displayed in the Winery.

Pleasant Hill Winery celebrated its 14th year in April. More than a dozen award-winning wines are produced. There is a wine to please every palate from dry reds and whites to sweet wines and ports. Grapes come from the Brenham vineyard, the Texas Davis Mountains vine-yard and from all over the great state of Texas. You can visit the Winery on weekends year-round for a tour and tasting. Chamber Works August 2011 Page 5

The 2011 Junior Leadership program will kick off in October, and the Chamber will soon be looking for 20 high school juniors and seniors to participate.

This abbreviated version of the Leadership Washing-ton County program for adults is designed to educate, train and motivate area high school students to become leaders within their schools and communities. The pro-gram provides students with information and leadership skills and prepares them for service to the public.

Participants go through an eight-week program that gives a behind-the-scenes look at community operations and introduces them to Washington County’s elected and civic leaders.

High school juniors and seniors in Washington County are eligible to apply for the Junior Leadership program. In order to allow for adequate class interaction and orga-

nization, the class is limited to 20 participants. To apply, pick up an application at the Chamber. Applications will be confidentially reviewed by a selection committee and the top 20 applicants will be accepted into the program.

Leadership for High School Students

Introducing the Leadership Class of 2012The new class of Leadership Washington County participants will convene this month with an Orienta-

tion followed by a day-long Leadership Development session, and then a Team Building Retreat at Camp For All in September. The participants will graduate from the program in May, 2012.

The twenty-two professionals listed below will be challenged, inspired and educated about the many fac-ets of effective leadership and the structure of this community. They will experience ten in-depth sessions, including a memorable trip to Austin for State Government Day where they will meet personally with state lawmakers and learn about the legislative process.

They will also be treated to amazing, behind-the-scenes tours of some of Brenham’s most unique busi-nesses. During this program, participants will meet top leaders in the community and form relationships that will aid them in their professional careers for years to come.

Leadership Washington County is hosted and coordinated each year by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce with assistance from alumni of the program. It is one of the most meaningful ways to give back after you have received all the valuable training and experiences in the LWC program.

A few alumni are still needed to help with sessions for the Class of 2012. Please call Jane Hinze at (979) 836-3695 if you would like more details.

Watch this newsletter for photos and articles about the new class over the next several months as they learn and grow together as professionals and leaders.

Leadership participants learn what makes this community work! They form new relationships and forge lasting bonds while touring commu-nity sites and hearing from local leaders.

Plus, enjoy live music with Front Porch Friends and sample lav-ender cuisine. Tour the farm’s gift shop with its wonderful selection of lavender-related items. Owner of the Hempstead Country Inn & Suites, Tony Childers (left) and Shana Lopez (right) stopped a tour of the property to take a picture with Seneca McAdams (middle). The property joined the Washington County Chamber and became one of over 250 tourism partners with the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Picking and crushing grapes is fun for the whole family as this mother/daughter team demonstrates. Don’t miss out. Aug. 13-14 is the last weekend for grape stomping.

Media Update from the CVBIn spite of the heat, your CVB staff has been busy pro-

moting travel to Brenham and Washington County. In ad-dition to the regular print advertising schedule, staff have also placed advertising on two Houston web sites.

The first program, which we have participated in several times since 2010, involves Click2houston.com. When you access the web site, click on “Lifestyle,” then find the “Trav-el” tab. That will take you to a page promoting weekend travel opportunities. Our promotions appear on a rotating schedule with some other area tourism destinations.

This summer program runs June–August and involves a giveaway drawing for each of the three months. For June, the winner was Thomas Steplyk from Houston. He won an overnight stay in Washington County, along with admis-sion to grape stomping at all three county wineries and a $50 gift card. The July winner was Stacey Martin from Pearland. She won an overnight stay, four tickets for two hours of play at Horseshoe Junction Family Fun Park and a $50 gift card.

From these two months of activity, the CVB has gained 610 names and email addresses to add to our monthly e-newsletter mailing list, plus promoted a variety of activi-ties and attractions on a web site that generates several million hits annually.

We are also looking at expanding this type of program to another Houston TV outlet, and are currently participating in an online promotional effort with the Houston Chroni-cle. As results become known, we’ll keep you posted.

2012 Visitor Guide MailingInformation to participate in the 2012 Brenham/Wash-

ington County Visitor Guide was mailed Aug. 1st to all tourism partners. If you did not receive this mailing, and would like details on participating, please call the CVB at the Visitor Center at (979) 836-3696. The deadline for submitting information at the “early bird” special rate is Aug. 22.

Each year 150,000 Guides are published and distributed around the state to all Texas Travel Information Centers, as well as a number of outlets in large metropolitan areas. Guides are available to visitors to our area, and also indi-vidually mailed to all parts of the U.S. to fulfill reader re-quests resulting from print and online advertising. Bottom line: it’s one of the most economical advertising buys any-where. Contact Lu Hollander at the CVB for more info.

Since opening on Dec. 1, 2010, more than 12,000 visitors have walked through the doors of the Brenham/Washington County Visitor Center in the historic Simon Build-ing. While many came from other parts of the state or country, others visited from as far away as the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, China and Japan. Regardless, the beautiful rolling hills, rich historical land-marks, and of course the “Best Ice Cream in the Country,” brought them to the area we call home.

There is no reason those of us lucky enough to live here can’t also enjoy the at-tractions that draws travelers from around the world. During the coming months, let me be your virtual tour guide. As visitor

center manager, my new monthly column will highlight some of the sites and experi-ences that have made Washington County such a popular destination. Whether you were born and raised here, or just got here as soon as you could, join me as we redis-cover the wonderful offerings available in our own backyard.

Our first stop is Yonder Way Farm lo-cated at 5500 Highway 105 in Brenham. Visitors from College Station, Houston, Austin and San Antonio find themselves experiencing a simpler natural pace upon arrival. Farmer Jason Kramer explains the beef, pork, and chickens raised on the farm are pasture-fed and rotated through-out this natural environment using the art

of grass farming. Not an easy task during this extended drought. This locally grown, close-to-home food source is available for purchase through the website www.Yon-derWayFarm.com and at the Farm Store. The store is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and during Farm Days, the first Sat-urday of each month. Contact Farm Store Administrator, Julie Burnham, at 979-530-4444 or 866-577-2589.

A great opportunity to explore, eat dinner with the farmer, and experience real farm life will be Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the “Tour, Dinner & a Movie Night” at the Farm. Tours will begin at 6 p.m with a full course meal, serving Yon-der Way Farm meats at 7 p.m. Following

dinner, “FRESH the movie” featuring speakers Michael Pollen and Joel Salatin, will give insight into pasture-based grass-roots farming which is the model for Yon-der Way Farm. Tickets for the evening are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Please RSVP no later than August 13 by going to the website, YonderWay-Farm.com. This event is open to the first 50 families who RSVP.

Next month we will be getting ready for the “Oldest County Fair in Texas,” the 143rd Washington County Fair. Pull on your boots and grab your hat! I’m looking forward to our travels!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTA Dream Remembered

Thank you to everyone who attended the Grand Opening of Expedia Cruiseship Centers at 204 East Alamo in Brenham on July 1, and for the very warm welcome from the community.

Most everyone knows about my husband’s near fatal car accident near Dallas on June 7. I have received many good wishes and prayers for his recovery. He is doing well and was scheduled to be released from TIRR in Houston the first week in Aug.. He still has a long way to go in his recovery with physical and occupational therapy and will need someone with him at home at all times.

It is with heavy heart that I have made the decision to close my Expedia CruiseShipCenters office in Downtown Brenham and move my business back to home-based. I have done this for several years so it will not be a big change for me. The store front office was a dream for a long time and it saddens me to see it go, but family must always come first.

Expedia CruiseShipCenters will still be in business and the phone number will not change, so I cordially invite our won-derful clients and friends here, and anyone who has travel needs to contact me for the impeccable service in travel we are known for. You may contact us at (979) 836-6577 or by email at [email protected]. For more information and last minute deals go to www.cruiseshipcenters.com/BarbaraJamison.

Thank you, Brenham, for your love and support at this time and for visiting us on the square! I hope I will still talk to you from time to time and whenever a travel need arises.

Kindest Regards, Barbara Jamison, ACC-NACTA
