Masai Mara Game Reserverobably the most amous o the reserves, the Masai Mara, in Kenyas southwestern corner, oasts an astonishing amount o game. Unenced, the Mara is bounded in the east by thegama Hills and in the west by the Oloololo or Siria Escarpment. Gazelle, wildebeest and

ebra graze in large numbers and where prey is ound so are predators. Not only is this areat place in which to find game, but also the wide greeny-gold savannahs spotted withhorn trees make it ideal or photography. Te

Mara, as it is known in Kenya, is ravishingly beautiul and also offers long, undisturbedews and utterly dramatic panoramas. Te weather really means something here. Te sun

may beat down unorgiving, huge clouds in abulous shapes may sweep across the widest skies; the wind ripples the grasses asthough a giant hand strokes them.Te landscape isunning.

Te amously black-manned Mara lions are possibly the stars o the Mara show, but cheetah, elephant, kongoni, topi,Tompsons gazelle, waterbuck, hyena, and primates are all here too. As with the rest o Kenya, the birding is good.

amously, the Mara is the northerly end o the Great Migration, that great primeval surge o wildebeest, zebra and antelopehat sweeps in rom anzanias Serengeti to Kenyas Masai Mara as the anzanian grass starts to ail. Te large predatorsho pick off the weak, the stragglers and the young track them. Te great herds, in the Masai Mara rom July throughctober, mass along the Mara River, pushing, shoving and antastically noisy, just waiting or the first animal to cross so

hat they can all ollow, lemming-like, on the final leg o the journey. However, crocodiles lie in wait, sluggishly cruisinghe waters, ully prepared or their best meal o the year. Many ail in the lie-and-death struggle - drowned, eaten by the

ocodiles or, made careless or weak by their stressul swim, brought down by lions. Te Masai Mara is not to be missed.

Amboseli National Parkmboseli is one o Kenyas oldest and most-visited parks. Much o its

magic is derived rom the act that it is towered over by the snow-cappedulk o Mount Kilimanjaro which, at 5,896 metres above sea level isricas highest mountain. Comparatively compact, the park is dottedith a series o bright green swamps, in which great herds o elephants

an ofen be seen hal-submerged amongst the papyrus grasses.s renowned or its photo-opportunities as it or its large elephantopulation, Amboseli remains one o HE great saari destinations.

mboseli is world-amous or its populations o large mammals, mostpecially elephants o which there are around 700. Te swamps are a

entre o activity or elephants, hippos, buffaloes and abundant waterrds. Te surrounding flat grasslands are home to grazing antelopes.

potted hyenas are plentiul, as are jackals, warthogs, olive baboons andervet monkeys.
