It wasn't the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce SmallBusiness Celebration's big prize -- the Small Business of theYear award. That went to Stewbos. But Breakaway Cyclesowner Gene Kirk said receiving Innovative Customer Servicerecognition at the awards banquet proved his business plan isworking."Obviously, our goal was to win the Small Business of the

Year award," Kirk said. "But I have to admit, it's really nice tobe recognized for the day-in, day-out stuff that is such acrucial part of our business. That's the way we treat all of ourcustomers."Somebody put on Facebook -- it was one of our customers

that I'd never met before -- that 'Breakaway is sellinghappiness.' That's one of the nicest things anyone could havesaid about our business. Each person has their own little story, but when you shop at our business it's never, 'Here's yourbike, get out the door.' We love what we do here."Breakaway, which is in its fourth year of operation in

Albany, has experienced annual growth surpassing 18 percent. In addition to offering products and services that "don't justenhance the economy, but individuals' lives," the company hashosted bicycle safety and maintenance clinics for the generalpublic and the Boys Scouts, and has supported sportingevents such as the Snickers Marathon, the Fat Four MountainBike Race at Chehaw and the Cheetah Chase trail run. While Stewbos claimed the Small Business of the Year

award, and Breakaway Cycles was recognized for itsInnovative Customer Service, two other small businessesreceived runner-up recognition at the Chamber's SmallBusiness Celebration. Hughey & Neuman Inc. was first-runner-up, while Darkotech Inc.'s Atlantic Pallet Exchangedivision was second runner-up."This is a huge honor, especially being runner-up to

Stewbos," Hughey & Newman co-owner Callie Hughey Walkersaid. "They have had such a huge impact on our community.Being recognized by the Chamber, I believe, shows that thehard work of our (Walker and her sister, Katie HugheyGatewood, are now co-owners/managers of Hughey &Neuman) parents and our grandparents is the way to besuccessful."Our grandfather started the business 60 years ago, and we

hope we can carry it into the future for another 60 years.Working with family has its challenges, but it's been such ablessing for us."Hughey & Neuman was founded in 1954 by George W.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEOPositive Perception = Success

Attention members and business community; do you want higher profits, increased productivityand better efficiency from your employees? Do you long to share your passion for your companywith others in your community? Well have no fear because the time is now… On July 14 the“There’s Only One Albany” campaign was launched to help us do just that.

If you believe in your business like we all know each of you do, then it only makes sense tobelieve in the community where your business is located right? After all, you can only imaginehow difficult it would be to succeed in owning or managing a business if negative thoughtsoverwhelm you about the community you do business in. I believe that with success comes apersonal perception of success, which in turn allows dreams to become reality.

Several years ago I attended a seminar where the presenter discussed the 5 P’s of success;Passion, Pride, Purpose, Profit and Perception. The “There’s Only One Albany” campaign focuseson 3 of those 5, Passion, Pride and Perception. If we as a business community display Passion innot just our line of work, but also in the community we all serve and show Pride in our

community then the Perception of Albany will begin to change which will be bring additional Profits and a renewedsense of Purpose. I will end with a few quotes that exemplify what this campaign is all about.

“To change ourselves effectively, we must first change our perceptions” -- Steven Covey

“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you willnever, ever have enough” -- Oprah Winfrey

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at begin to change” -- Wayne Dyer
