    1.1 Tool List

    (1) The following is a list of tools required to pack or unpack the Gas Generator.

    (2) Ensure that the tool used is correct for the task and that no unauthorisedmodifications have been carried out.

    1.2 General

    (1) When in static storage the humidity in the container can be controlled byeither desiccant or dry nitrogen purging. The container is purged andpressurised with nitrogen to prevent corrosion of the gas generator.

    (2) If nitrogen purging the container for static (non transportation) storagepurposes then the MVP bag and any desiccant must be removed.

    (3) When transporting the gas generator use only desiccant.

    (4) If desiccant protection of the gas generator is required,Section 1, Para 9and pack the gas generator in the MVP bag, adding desiccant as specifiedand then proceed as Para 1.3.

NOTEAdditional desiccant is placed in the container after the gasgenerator, stand and MVP bag with the initial desiccant areinstalled in the container. Refer toPara 1.5 (9).

    (5) Store the container so that daily variation in temperature is kept to aminimum.

    r2 NITROGEN PURGE (IF REQUIRED)

    2.1 General

CAUTION NITROGEN PURGE IS FOR STATIC STORAGE PURPOSESONLY. THE MVP BAG MUST BE OMITTED AND NODESICCANT IS INSTALLED.

    (1) If nitrogen purging the container, the MVP bag must be omitted and nodesiccant is to be installed.

    (2) The nitrogen displaces the damp and probably contaminated air that ispresent in the container when the gas generator is packed.

    (3) The container may be purged with dry, oxygen free nitrogen to preventdeterioration of the gas generator.

    (4) The container is stored with a slight positive pressure of nitrogen to reducethe amount of nitrogen lost or "breathed" through the pressure relief valve.

    2.2 Container Storage

    (1) To minimise the loss of nitrogen through the breather valve, the containershould be stored such at the daily temperature variation is as low aspossible. If the temperature variation exceeds 20C the pressure relief valvewill vent regularly.

2.3 Equipment for Nitrogen Purging and Replenishing

    (1) The nitrogen equipment should be as follows:-

    (a) Two bottles type K of 7.7m3capacity, 17500 kPa (175 Bar) of dry, oxygen free nitrogen (OFN). The bottle is identified as being grey, withthe head being black with a 75mm white spot and should be fitted witha regulator to control the delivery pressure to less than 70 kPa(10 lbf/sq.in.). A two stage regulator is preferred.

    (b) A pressure gauge reading to 4.8 kPA (0.7 lbf/sq.in), (approximately)

    mid scale

    2.4 Purging Procedure

    (1) The recommended purge is 2.5 to 3 times the air volume of the container. This corresponds to approximately two 7.7m3nitrogen cylinders.

    (2) Refer toChapter 10, Section 1, Fig 59. Remove the brass conveyor trolleydrive access plug and check the shaft hole is not obstructed. This hole isthe exhaust path for the air and nitrogen.

NOTE The plug is retained by a short cable.

r(3) Refer toChapter 10, Section 1, Fig 59. Remove the 'Document Holder'

door. The pressure gauge should be fitted to the 3/8in.BSP entry.

    (4) Connect the nitrogen delivery hose to the quick release connector in the top

right of the recess. There is a non-return valve in the internal pipework.

    (5) Open the delivery valve and continuously check that:-

The regulator pressure does not exceed 70 kPa (10 lbf/sq.in.) and thecontainer pressure does not exceed 3.5 kPa (0.5 lbf/sq.in.)

    (6) Close the bottle valve if either pressure is exceeded.

    (7) Pass the contents of two bottles of nitrogen through the container.

    (8) As the second bottle is approaching exhaustion the conveyor trolley driveaccess plug must be replaced and tightened to secure and seal.

    (9) Pressurise to 2.75 kPa (0.4 lbf/sq.in.) as shown on the container gauge.

    (10) Refer toChapter 10, Section 1, Fig 59. Disconnect the nitrogen deliveryhose, after closing the bottle valve, and replace the document holder door.

    2.5 Replenishing Procedure

    (1) To replace dry nitrogen lost through the valve breathing and leaks in thecontainer seals the following procedure must be followed:-

    (2) Refer toChapter 10, Section 1, Fig 59. Remove the document holder door.

    (3) Check the pressure gauge on the container.

NOTE The pressure gauge does not have a non-return valve, and oncefitted should be left. The pressure at which replenishment isnecessary is subjective and depends upon the ambienttemperature and the likely change in temperature. If the

temperature is at the highest point in the daily cycle, the nitrogenshould be replenished if the pressure is less than 2.0 kPa (0.3lbf/sq.in.). If the temperature is at its lowest point then therelevant pressure is 0.35 kPa (0.05 lbf/sq.in.).

    (4) Refer to Chapter 10, Section 1, Fig 56. Check the humidity indicator. If thisis showing pink indicating dampness instead of blue, then the desiccantmust be changed and the purging procedure carried out as inpara 2.4.

r(5) Assuming that replenishment only is required, proceed as follows:

    (a) Connect the nitrogen bottle via its regulator and delivery hose.

    (b) Set the regulator to minimum [less than 69 kPa (10 lbf/sq.in.)].

    (c) Open the bottle valve and observe the container pressure gauge.

    (d) Close the bottle valve when the pressure in the container reaches3 kPa (0.45 lbf/sq.in.) (temperature at highest point) or 1.4 kPa(0.2 lbf/sq.in.) (temperature at lowest).

NOTEExceeding these pressures is not serious but leads to awastage of nitrogen when the breather valve vents at 3.5kPa (0.5 lbf/sq.in.).

    (e) Refer toChapter 10, Section 1, Fig 59. Disconnect the delivery hoseand replace the document holder door.

    2.6 Checking of Breather Valve

    (1) To check the breather valve, the nitrogen delivery pipe should be connectedas above. The container is inflated slowly to the point where the valve vents. The venting gas may be felt, or there may be a slight noise of venting gas.

NOTEThe pressure at which the valve vents and resets.(2) To check the valve is not sticking, and is seating, the button on the valve may

be pressed. The venting gas may be felt, or there may be a slight noise ofventing gas.

    3 PRIOR TO TRANSIT CHECKS

CAUTIONDO NOT MOVE CONTAINER BEFORE ENSURING THE CHECKSHAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

    (1) Engine transit clamps are fitted and tight.

    (2) Conveyor trolley locking bolts are fitted and tightened.

    (3) All assembly bolts and nuts are tight.

    (4) The conveyor trolley drive access plug is removed when air freighting thecontainer.

    (5) All door fasteners are tight.

    (6) Both door levelling jacks are retracted and tight.
