Although classifi ed as neurologically impaired in the third grade,

LeDerick R. Horne has become a successful spoken word poet,

playwright, speaker, entrepreneur, and advocate. He has been

recognized across the country as a motivational speaker and advocate

for people with disabilities.

LeDerick graduated with honors from New Jersey City University in

2003 with a B.A. in Mathematics and a minor in Fine Art. He released

Rhyme Reason and Song in 2005, a spoken word play addressing

gentrifi cation’s aff ect on urban culture, and Black and Blue in 2011,

a collection of word

poetry focusing on

his experiences in the

educational system.

He co-created and

performed in New

Street Poets, a spoken

word play addressing

gentrifi cation’s aff ect

on urban culture and

is collaborating with

the writers to develop

a spoken word play

called Commencement,

addressing the

stereotypes that shape

the education system.

LeDerick is currently

the board chair of Project Eye-to-Eye (projecteyetoeye.org), a national

nonprofi t which provides mentoring programs for students who have

learning disabilities and attention defi cit disorders.

LeDerick’s poetry is available online for purchase and download

on iTunes, and his performances can be viewed on YouTube. LeDerick

Postsecondary Transition Expo!

The Postsecondary Transition Expo is designed for individuals who

are ages 14 to 22 and on a current Individualized Education Program

(IEP), parents of students with disabilities, and educators and agency

personnel working with postsecondary transition.

Presented by the State Support Team Region 1 and Bowling Green State

University, the Expo offers exhibits by regional and state vendors and

sessions for parents, transition providers, and students.

Keynote and Presentations by LeDerick Horne

A special keynote and several presentations will be delivered by poet,

disability advocate, and entrepreneur LeDerick Horne. LeDerick will

present “Self-Advocacy Workshop,” a session for students, and “Changing

School Culture,” a session for parents and professionals.

Information, Resources and Fun!

During the Expo, students will gain advice from employers and

job developers and learn self-advocacy and self-determination

skills. Parents and professionals will fi nd information relating to the

Individualized Education Program (IEP), evidence-based practices,

Ohio Longitudinal Transition Study (OLTS), and resources on planning

for education, employment and independent living.

Students and their parents will have the opportunity to attend

a guided tour of the Bowling Green State University campus.

All attendees will fi nd food, fun and networking!

Adult volunteers will be available throughout the day to assist students

STUDENTS(Students will be assigned to Group A or B at Registration)

• Group A: Self-Advocacy: What Is It and How Does It Work?

In this special session by LeDerick Horne, students will learn the principles of self-advocacy, how

it works in a variety of environments, and how it is linked to identifying and achieving life goals.

• Group B: Web-Based Accessible Tools

Explore engaging Web sites that off er reading, writing and math support. These Web sites can

assist students through high school and college.

PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS

• Agency Panel: Eligibility and Referral Guidelines

A panel of staff from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, Ohio Rehabilitation Services

Commission, Social Security Administration, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and Alcohol, Drug

Addiction and Mental Health Board will discuss eligibility, referral guidelines and services.

• Special Education Postsecondary Transition Requirements

Learn about the state and federal requirements for Postsecondary Transition in the IEP, Future Planning,

Transfer of Rights at the Age of Majority, and Summary of Performance.

• Supporting the Transition from High School to College

College students with and without disabilities will identify key diff erences between high school and college

that includes applicable laws, required documentation, and services.

• The Journey to Adulthood for People with Disabilities, Part I

Explore real life journeys shared by people with disabilities and their families and learn the resources,

strategies and supports that helped them succeed.

• Evidence-Based Predictors and Practices

Learn about evidence-based predictors for postsecondary success, the Ohio Longitudinal Transition Study,

Ohio Core graduation requirements, and credit fl exibility.

• Bowling Green State University Campus Tour

Learn about the admissions process and explore the Bowling Green State University campus. Students must

be accompanied by an adult. Staff from the university will be available as needed.
