board’s messageIn the more than 25 years that I have been deeply involved with AtlantaHabitat, I have never been more excited and impressed than I am now—as we stand on the brink of our organization’s 35th anniversary.
Looking back over the arc of our existence—from a small group of people devoted to building decent, affordable houses rooted in the small Christiancommunity of Koininia in Americus, Georgia to becoming the largest, nonprofit affordable homebuilder in Atlanta—I am more inspired than ever.
We have built on the success of our 2016 Strategic Plan and exceeded theBoard’s expectations by a substantial margin. Not only did we continue tomake a more than $6 million impact on our city through our homeowners’paying nearly $1 million in property taxes, but we are also dramatically increasing the number of families we serve, and the ways in which we serve.
Our staff is one of the cornerstones of our continued success. eir efforts on a daily basis have helped to elevate Atlanta Habitat as a premier affordablehousing option for future homeowners who need it the most. ey are led by
our President and CEO, Lisa Gordon, who continues to be recognized as a visionary leader in transformationalredevelopment efforts for quality affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. In addition to her2017 appointment as a Fellow into the “National Academy of Public Administration,” Lisa was inductedinto the YWCA of Greater Atlanta’s “Academy of Women Achievers.”
In a nod to the organization’s excellence and efficiency, Habitat for Humanity International named AtlantaHabitat a 2017 Affiliate of Distinction. And, building on the organization’s 2016 designation by the AtlantaBusiness Chronicle as of One of the Best Places to Work, Lisa has continued to match the expertise, talentand passion of employees; she has offered them expanded benefits and opportunities to celebrate success. We couldn’t be more proud to work with her.
Finally, on behalf of the entire Atlanta Habitat team, thank you. We extend our deepest gratitude to our tireless volunteers, committed sponsors and generous donors. You are truly the ones making transformational change in Atlanta, helping our city to…

ceo’s messageIt takes a village to raise a child as well as improve our communities. We areso thankful for the support of our staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors who work with us to build healthy communities. In 2017, our focus was anaccelerated expansion of our mission to empower homeowners beyond thebuild and transform the communities we serve in meaningful and positiveways. As a result, we are poised to serve record numbers of families in 2018.
at strategic mission to increase homeownership, serve more families, ignite positive change in key neighborhoods such as the historic Westside, and to expand organizational capacity is embodied in our brand: Build.rive. Grow!
All those facets coalesced this year as we modernized internal operations and processes; established our first Communications and Housing andNeighborhood Engagement departments; and developed innovative education programs that empower our homeowners to reach professional goals that move their lives forward.
We challenged our team to impact more families, expand our programs and stretch our reach to establishedresidents in our neighborhoods. We are proud of our progress and the recognitions we’ve received; but ourreal success is told in the inspiring stories of Atlanta Habitat families like the single dad whose scholarshipaward from Atlanta Habitat allowed him to complete the last year of graduate school and the elderly veterancaring for his ailing wife who participated in our critical repair program. ey are safer and more at ease intheir home now that it has a new roof, gutters and a handicap-accessible bathroom. ere’s the mom who cannow launch her solid business idea with the help of cash, a computer and business mentoring advice. And,there’s the student who is steadily improving in school as he becomes more engaged in our youth programs.
Atlanta Habitat homeowners are the stories behind the numbers. Some 54 families celebrated the holidayswith loved ones in their new homes. Since its inception in 2015, our Repair with Kindness (RWK) programhas grown more than ten-fold. Last year we completed 34 critical home repairs for veterans and elderlyneighbors–nearly tripling the numbers from 2016. We doubled the number of Brush with Kindness (BWK)exterior home-painting projects and plan to extend the program to established neighbors in 2018. And, alongwith sponsors, neighbors and volunteers, we completed four neighborhood-wide cleanups. at’s how webuild the block, but more importantly, that’s how we empower families.
At the mature age of 35, Atlanta Habitat is poised to soar! Stable homes for generations and increasedneighborhood vibrancy are the ripple effects of the communitywide impact that Atlanta Habitat–in partnership with our donors, sponsors and volunteers–has on our city and region.
Warm regards,
Lisa Y. Gordon, CPAPresident and CEO

the ripple effect of kindness
When Lillie Ferguson learned about Atlanta Habitat’s Repair withKindness (RWK) program during a neighborhood meeting, herhouse was in desperate need of some TLC. Once she realized shequalified for the program, Lillie applied and was accepted. As part of the program, her house received a new roof, windows, gutters, anew garage and an exterior paint job. “I’m very pleased with the way the process went,” Lillie says. “I don’t have any complaints about anything, I’m very happy.”
RWK helps qualified, established homeowners make critical repairs to their homes to keep them safe, dry and accessible. “e concept behindRepair with Kindness is to go into communities where we’re already building and positively impact and help more people in the neighborhood,” says Jimmy Harrelson,Atlanta Habitat’s purchasing, warehouse and facilities senior manager. Most RWKprojects involve the elderly, veterans and those with disabilities. Increasing demandfor RWK clearly reflects the timeliness of Atlanta Habitat’s expanded mission toserve more families. e program began in 2015 with a gi to fuel this expansion.
Atlanta Habitat’s critical repair and exterior paint programs, Repair with Kindnessand Brush with Kindness, increase community pride in neighborhoods wherewe build. That’s what we mean by “Building the Block.”

Brush with Kindness focuses on painting a home’s exterior, which goes a long way toward building curbappeal. “Having my house painted felt like getting a
brand-new pair of shoes,” says Valerie Dixon, who has owned her AtlantaHabitat home for 19 years. “It looks just like new.”
Both programs seek to retain anchor homeowners in Atlanta’s most challengedcommunities. Atlanta Habitat’s critical repair programs receive vital supportfrom the May P. And Francis L. Abreu Charitable Trust, e Home Depot ande Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. In 2018, Atlanta Habitat will expand this program to established homeowners in ourtargeted communities and on the Westside, in partnershipwith the Westside Future Fund.
In addition, ReHab, Atlanta Habitat’s renovation program, provides new homeownership options for families andsupports our commitment to neighborhood revitalization.
“Now we are able to keep housing assets in the neighborhood instead of tearingthem down and starting from scratch,” says Dan Maddox, Atlanta Habitat’s chief operating officer. “We can reduce blight and get more families into homes.”

Deconstruction Fuels ConstructionAtlanta Habitat ReStore’s new program turns tear-downs into new builds
restore
Raj Shah, a loyal Atlanta Habitat volunteer, recently purchased an older home in Atlanta with plans to tear it down and builda new one. When he saw the great qualityof the cabinetry, appliances and bath fixtures, he knew exactly who to call.
“My law firm has actually sponsored an Atlanta Habitat build for the past five years,so I am very familiar with the ReStore.”Shah wanted to donate all of the interioritems of his home. This gracious offer led to a new initiative for the ReStore: deconstruction.
Through the new deconstruction initiative,ReStore teams dismantle anything that can be repurposed or sold—doors, windows, architectural trimmings, bath fixtures, cabinets, appliances; any materials that are not part of the house’s structure can be donated. Most items from Shah’s home sold within a week at the ReStore, generating thousands of dollars to support Atlanta Habitat’s mission. Thanks todonors and deconstruction services in 2017, netproceeds from ReStore sales generated enoughfunds to fully sponsor homes for 10 Atlanta Habitat homebuyers. A record-breaking year!

On a balmy evening in late February 2018, more than 500 of Atlanta’s luminaries–representing Atlanta Habitat sponsors, donors and volunteers–gathered to celebrate the organization’s 35th anniversary. The “Welcome to Our
Neighborhood” fundraising gala featured a 4-D neighborhood experience complete with a virtual Brush with Kindnessinteraction and raised more than $500,000 to fuel Atlanta Habitat’s ambitious expansion plans to serve more
families. It was a magical evening, and we appreciate everyone who made it a success. Stay tuned….
