What is IVF?In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a procedure where Eggs areremoved from a woman's ovaries and inseminated out-side the body. Any embryo(s) that result are then placedin the woman's uterus where they may implant andgrow.

What is ICSI?It is an acronym to describe Intra cytoplasmic Sperm In-jection, the injection of a single sperm directly into thecytoplasm of an oocyte.

How to diagnose infertility and the right age womenshould try for natural pregnancy?If you have regular periods and are 35 years of age or less,the general recommendation is to attempt pregnancynaturally for one year before exploring fertility treatmentoptions.Menstrual irregularity, on the other hand, is a clear signof irregular ovulation and would be one reason not towait, as most ovulation problems can be corrected withmedication.For women who are over the age of 35, it would be rea-sonable to do some preliminary fertility testing rightaway. This would ensure there are no problems that needto be treated immediately, given the limited number ofyears left for childbearing.

What are the options for women over 40 years of Age?The physician will do a complete assessment includinghormonal blood work to determine if your ovaries arestill fertile, and whether they would respond to fertilitydrugs likely leading to pregnancy.Fertility decreases as you age. There is also a significantlyhigher rate of miscarriage and genetic abnormalities(such as Down's syndrome) occurring in pregnancieswith advancing maternal age. Prenatal testing is avail-able at an early stage of the pregnancy to detect the morecommon abnormalities.

What are the options for men with low sperm count?A careful assessment of your partner will be done includ-ing blood work and semen analysis to further evaluatethe specific abnormality in the sperm (i.e. low spermcount and/or low motility).We also work closely with the urologists who may per-form further specialized testing in order to present you

and your partner with the full range of treatment optionsavailable.

What is the information needed prior to setting up anappointment at KIC?If you have undertaken treatment previously, any docu-ments relating to your infertility, i.e. operative reports,semen analysis, blood work, hysteron salpingogram re-ports, previous IVF cycles. Please include your addressand phone numbers (home and work) so we may contactyou for a consultative appointment.

Are IVF related procedures painful? Can I view them?Our desire is to make your IVF pro-cedure as comfortable as possible.We use adequate pain relief shouldyou require or request it. You will beawake for the procedure but will bein a "partial sedated state."

I am a single Woman/ Man. Do Ihave access to your services?Due to recent Indian government’svisa regulations, we can offer onlyIVF for single Foreign women, andnot surrogacy for Foreign single menand women.However, there are reports in themedia that this is going to change ina few months. You can still contactus and we will get back to you whenwe can offer you a particular treat-ment/ service.We have our own sperm bank/ Egg Donor Database andwill assist you through the process of making your deci-sion.

What happens with extra embryos after I achieve preg-nancy?We value all our Intended Parents as the most importantpart of KIC and priorities and concerns of all I.P's will al-ways be considered when such decisions are made.Physician will give you a report on the quality and num-ber of Embryos, and will discuss with you a safe numberof Embryos to transfer. Any extra Embryos can be frozenfor use at a later time. These Frozen Embryos can bethawed at a future date either for another child or to try

Is it safe to take herbal products along with my fertilitymedications?Many herbal medications have powerful biological ef-fects and some may actually inhibit fertility. We suggestyou refrain from using any herbal medications duringyour fertility treatments at the unit.

How long does an IVF cycle take? How many days ofwork will I need to take off?Generally an IVF cycle takes about 2-3 weeks. You areonly required to come to the clinic on some of thesedays and appointments will be provided to minimizethe time you will spend for cycle monitoring (bloodtest and ultrasound). However, we recommend for youto be assessed at our center near the end of your cycle.It would be necessary to be off from work on the day ofthe retrieval.

Can fibroids interfere with IVF?Fibroids are benign tumours consisting of fibrous tis-sue and muscle which grow in the uterus. The signifi-cance of fibroids relates to not only their size but alsotheir location. Even small fibroids located inside thecavity of the uterus where embryos need to implant,may interface with success and need to be removed.Fibroids that do not encroach on the cavity of theuterus are generally not significant unless they arelarger than 5 cm in diameter and also if there are manyfibroids causing significant uterine enlargement.

I have Endometriosis; does this affect my fertility &also success with IVF?Endometriosis is a condition where cells that usuallyremain confined to the cavity of the uterus, grow out-side of the uterus usually on or in the ovaries and alsoon the surface of the pelvic pain and may also decreasethe chances of natural conception by about one-thirdPatients who require IVF who have endometriosis stillhave the same chances of a successful outcome as pa-tients of the same age without endometriosis as long asimmunological factors that may accompany en-dometriosis are identified and treated appropriately.

Does KIC provide Surrogacy Services?Yes, we provide services for patients requiring a Gesta-tional Carrier for Medical or other related reasons.Please call or write to us to obtain further information.

How do I get copies of my medical records?Patients must complete an Authorization for Re-lease of Information form, and submit to our Cen-ter. You will need to be specific about the recordsyou wish. Please note is take 10 business days tocomplete these requests within 1 year of comple-tion of your treatment and 20 business days afterone year and within 4 years of completion of yourtreatment.

What are the risks associated with IVF treatment?Like all medical treatments, IVF carries some risksand your clinic should discuss these with you be-fore you go ahead with treatment. Risks can in-clude reactions to fertility drugs that may beprescribed, and also the risks associated with anypregnancy.Drug reactionsYou may experience a mild reaction to fertilitydrugs such as ovulation-inducing drugs, pituitarystimulation and ovary-stimulating hormones. Dis-cuss these in advance with your doctor, so that youknow what a 'normal' reaction is. Ovarian-hyper stimulation syndrome (OHSS)This is a potentially dangerous over-reaction to fer-tility drugs used to stimulate egg production be-fore your eggs are collected for IVF treatment.Cysts develop in the ovaries and fluid collects inthe stomach. In rare cases, the ovaries becomevery swollen and fluid can fill the stomach & chestcavities. A fall in the concentration of red bloodcells can lead to blood clots. An HFEA report in2005 found that severe OHSS occurs in approxi-mately 1% of cycles. Blood flow to the kidneys mayalso be reduced. Symptoms include a swollenstomach and stomach pains. In severe cases, this isaccompanied by vomiting, shortness of breath,faintness and reduced urine. OHSS is potentiallyvery serious, so if you start to experience any ofthese symptoms, contact your clinic immediately. Ectopic pregnancyThis is when an embryo develops in your Fallopiantube rather than in the womb, and can happen in anatural pregnancy or when you have become preg-nant through fertility treatment. The chances of hav-ing an ectopic pregnancy seem to be slightly higherin women having fertility treatment, especially if youhave existing problems that affect your Fallopiantubes. Report any vaginal bleeding or stomach painto your clinic. They can do a blood test to check yourhormone levels. You should have a scan at six weeksto check for the baby's heartbeat & growth.

FOR 3 CYCLES OUR CUMULATIVE PREGNANCY RATES ARE AS HIGH ASThe specific chance of success varies with a number of fac-tors including the indication for the procedure, the patient’sage, the number of embryos transferred and a variety ofother factors. Your chances of success with IVF will be dis-cussed on an individual basis with your fertility specialist.The success rate with IVF must be viewed considering thenatural fertility rate in fertile couples that is approximatelyonly 10% per month. We advise you to be mentally preparedto undergo at least 3 cycles, so that finally we can ensureyou at least 85-90% success rate. Appropriate concessionsare given in the financial aspect of treatment if you under-take 3 full cycles.

A Miracle Is BornOur journey with the Kiran infertility Centre , stared 2 yearsago around Christmas time...After 5 years of trying to have a baby here in Toronto, Canadawe were looking for a miracle and we found it on CNN. Wewatched a show about the Kiran Infertility Center and possi-bilities of surrogacy in India.My husband Glenn contacted a few centres and we received amessage from Dr. Samit Sekhar who is the program directorand we really had a good feeling. We joint the clinic’s onlinesocial networking page contacted other intended parentsand received first hand information. We spoke to Dr. Samitmany times and in April 2011 we went to India. Our experi-ence in India was great, the staff was fantastic and everythingwent well, but our surrogate did not get pregnant, after re-ceiving the news we were heartbroken, however we knew wehad 4 tries, so we were just waiting and we trusted Dr. SamitAnd Dr. Kiran Sekhar very much.
