A Personal Experience Of ToningA Personal Experience Of ToningA Personal Experience Of Toning

By Dr. Jeffrey Zygar

*In response to his research on Buteyko Breathing, Jeffrey Zygar, a retired Dentist, wrote the following ar-ticulate and insightful treatment on Toning in Transfor-mational Breath®.+

The addition of toning to Transformational Breath® fur-ther demonstrates the intuitive brilliance Dr. Judy Krav-itz and Spirit manifests in the design of this awareness enhancing process. The original expressed purpose pro-vides a breather with a way to move through sensa-tions, feelings, or thoughts of overwhelm during the process. Alone, this benefit gives a life-enhancing op-portunity to a breather to deepen or broaden into his/her process. With the possibility of realizing a state of well-being a result of continuing into and with the pro-cess. This breather notes two other benefits.

First, during the breathing process the body experienc-es a changing level of dissolved oxygen and carbon di-oxide in the blood stream and in the tissues. This chang-ing physical state accounts for many of the sensations a breather, especially a new breather, might experience. When toning, the breathing stops for those moments, and the body then re-balances these blood and tissue levels, which it knows how to do without any effort oth-er than the toning.

Balancing the energy gives another view of how toning assists the breather which is directly related to the physiological balancing. As the breathing brings up the energy level, especially the vibratory rate, the toning assists the movement of energy where movement is needed. Some energy will be expressed outwardly with the toning as well. This leads us to the second benefit.

As we participate in the breathing process we move into different states of being, feeling and/or aware-ness. The process of integration, which the breathing promotes, allows us to bring these states into our outer lives. Toning gives us an initial way to express what we feel or the way we’re being as a step outward into life with our fellow human beings.

I recommend letting oneself express this tone with a sense of purpose and power and then close the eyes and put one’s attention on how this feels to express fully. Then when toning during the breathing, intend to

Transformational Breath® E-News

match or exceed that sense of power and purpose felt ini-tially and experience what happens.

Toning gives this breather a way to move through feeling overwhelmed, balance the energy and physiology of the body, and begin the expression of different ways of being.

Dr. Buteyko focused on the Bohr and Haldane Effects to come to his conclusions on breathing. Both breathing pro-cesses advance diaphragmatic breathing, as you said, he recommends a slower paced breathing process with a pause after exhaling rather than a continuous breath. I find I breathe the way he recommends after doing Transforma-tional Breath and I'm in general more aware of moments where I may have held my breath in the past.

What I learned is that the continuous breathing processes can generate an altered state of consciousness due to the O2 tissue changes which can assist the breather to experi-ence a sense of wholeness that occurs by lessening the logic activity. Another way of viewing it is: less left brain, and more right brain experience; and another way is experienc-ing the "Power of Now" as Eckhart Tolle defines it.

The toning encourages a breather to use toning to feel into the body, especially if an altered state occurs, this can ground the experience in the body. This felt and feels im-portant to me to integrate each "peak" experience. As with other workshop experiences, there has been a "what goes up must come down" experience on leaving the work-shops. Yes, continuing with self-breathing eases that transi-tion and, eventually, there is a sense of living in the state of being reached during the workshops in daily life.

As I've shared this process with others, I've noted the varie-ty of experiences that seem to occur, not unlike what hap-pens in the workshops, with each person having their own unique inner journey. I know that letting go of "control" so that a person experiences "being breathed" is important, and grounding the experience, which toning can assist, brings a "practical-ness" to the process.

Human life can be lived intentionally. What Transformation-al Breath can assist a breather to experience in the same process is the intention to live fully while letting go. A won-derful, holistic combination of experience literally leading to a wonder-filled life; the practical and spiritual combined.

TBF: Your work thus far had been in Kenya but now it ap-pears that it has, in fact, expanded outside Kenyan bor-ders into other parts of Africa. Our readers know of your work with AIDS/HIV, tell us how that is progressing, and talk of some of your other wonderful charitable programs.

DM: TIBA has been running a rolling programme of sup-port, education, and Breath sessions for people with AIDS/HIV living in the Kibera slums or nearby sub-slums; fifty peo-ple have now gone through the programme, with only one person succumbing to the virus from that group: a huge achievement when you take into account the stigma, physi-cal vulnerability, and enormous fear that exists of the virus, as well as the often inadequate living conditions and chal-lenges of earning enough money to eat regularly. Based on observation, the programme’s outcomes are several: 1) The HIV group boosted their energy, 2) overcame the stigma of HIV, 3) their family members gained relief, 4) the HIV group became more independent, 5) they were able to forgive their past, accept their condition, and change their percep-tion of life, 6) they looked younger, becoming full of life in the face, while boosting their immune systems, hence mak-ing them less vulnerable to HIV and AIDS-related complica-tions, 7) and they realised that they were still relevant in their community and that they are all equal to others while changing their focus from death to living life to the fullest.

At the moment based on the fact that TIBA AFRICA FOUN-DATION isn’t fully independent yet, we are dependent on support from overseas for much of our charitable work. However, based on the ethos of TIBA that comprises both charity and cooperative work, we expect to raise some money from the work we do with paying clients.

Out of this money we are already able to sponsor some people in need who couldn’t otherwise afford sessions. For example, in our last Seminar week, we were able to sponsor two women who were seriously in need of an intensive breathing program. This was paid from the fees given by two other participants of the week-long seminar. By this means, we believe that we’ll be able to sustain the charita-ble projects after sufficient awareness has been created and

ably wealthy Kenyans and expatriates can fund our breathwork activities.

TBF: And your projects with women and children?

DM: Yes, TIBA has begun to work with young women in a project that rescues and rehabilitates teenage girls (and their babies) from war zones in the Congo, Rwan-da, Somalia, and elsewhere, who may have been trafficked into Nairobi. Mindful of the level of trauma these girls have experienced, we agreed to work with them, and enable them to slowly release, through their breath, the memories of the trauma they’ve experi-enced, without experiencing that trauma again.

Abundance School was set up by Teacher Fred, with support from TIBA, including teacher training, behav-iour management advice, and some breathwork. The school now has over 80 children on roll, in one small classroom divided into two with a sheet; each child pays 20 Kenyan shillings per week, contributing directly to the rent of the building and the pay of the teacher and assistant teacher. While primary education is tech-nically free in Kenya, there are few Government-sponsored schools where they are most needed. The support that Abundance School has received has been books and games from the UK sent by Natalia Brown and other donors. Abundance School now needs sets of books for it to follow the Kenyan National Curriculum, with just one or two teachers for a large age range (3-12+), this is especially important. Before Abundance School can benefit from these books, the school’s secu-rity needs to be improved – acquiring a locking cup-board is the first priority.

Kids Empowerment Center is another school that has benefitted in the past from support from TIBA and now is sufficiently developed to stand alone. That school is

divided into four classes and also rents a small field for the children to play on, that they share with some sheep. Kids Empowerment Project has received considerable support from The Young And Wise Project through Dan de Kok and Martin Noshado in The Netherlands (linked to InsideOut) and although it still has funding challenges, it is now suffi-ciently established to function independently.

This is an important pro-ject, supporting mothers who have nobody to leave their babies with while they take casual work, or who don’t have the mon-ey to pay for a ‘house girl’. At the moment, the fu-ture of Joy BabyCare is a little uncertain, as the number of babies attend-ing has been variable and not always been enough to ensure an adequate level of pay for a com-mitted worker. Andria Falk and I began to think about how some of these

issues may be resolved.

Above all I want to acknowledge Vincent Oloo who has for so long been identified with TIBA for his phenomenal work he has done, along with me, to enable TIBA to be where it is today. Vincent has now set himself up in private practice under the banner of Breathe Africa and has a room in a love-ly Complementary Therapy Centre several miles away from TIBA’s office. While Vincent is not undertaking charitable work at the moment, I trust that this spreading wings will greatly spreading breathwork in Africa.

TBF: I hear you have an upcoming Seminar that is some-thing quite unique among Transformational Breath Semi-nars. Tell us your plans for this event and for future similar events.

DM: This is going to be a mind-blowing event combining both Transformational Breath® and tourism. It’s planned that after the seminar week, participants will have a three-day tour at Masai Mara National Reserve to view a wide

range of animals in their natural habitat.

TBF: What inspired you to incorporate the nature as-pect into a Breath Sem-inar?

DM: In the past, all visi-tors from Europe have always gone or wanted to go to see the wildlife. It’s as though the Uni-

verse has repeatedly reminded me to combine breathing and wildlife.

TBF: Where will this exotic Seminar week be held ex-actly?

The seminar week will be at Ukarimu Centre; where the peace and tranquility are quite amazing. Approxi-mately 400 km away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Ukarimu Centre is a spiritual centre where vegeta-tion, river, and landscape remind you of the beauty of creation. The fresh air reminds you of God’s presence. Natural and fresh food from the farm is served. There is a river for those who enjoy fishing. This is THE place to be for a Breath Seminar.

TBF: And when is your Seminar week?

DM: The Seminar is scheduled for Friday, 6th to Wednesday, 11th of December, 2013.

TBF: Here’s your chance to make an appeal for con-tinued support. How can readers best help? Where can they send funds to help operations?

DM: To help TIBA-Africa Support, part of the Transfor-mational Breath Foundation UK is a reliable means of channeling donations to Nairobi, via a PayPal button on its website. www.transformationalbreath.co.uk/tbf-uk-charities/?doing_wp_cron=1370596511.1877310276031494140625

Stroke

Q. Hi Judith, a 40 year old woman who had a stroke a few months ago wants to come and do a breathing session. All I know about her right now is that she's very sensitive to light. She is not severely disabled as a result of the stroke but has been deeply affected. Tinnitus is part of it also. Is there any downside to breathing a person in her condition, or anything to be aware of? Love, Sophia

A. Dear Sophia, it is possible and beneficial to breathe peo-ple who have experienced a stroke but certain precautions should be in place. She should definitely be propped up, at least 45 degrees, with her head slightly tilted forward resting on a pillow. It is imperative that there be an open flow from her lower abdomen to her upper chest and this flow should be the top priority, versus getting her activated. I would also begin with a slower, fuller breath and then connect it as it opens. It is important too that her exhale be relaxed as ener-gy would build up if it is not. I think with those things in mind you will have some good results and don’t be surprised if some of her stroke symptoms disappear. Love and hugs, Judi

Migraine

Q. Hi, I'm concerned about a client who, after his second ses-sion, developed migraines (of which he had never suffered before). I worked with him again, very gently, and although

he said he felt much better post session, the migraine came on so badly over night that he's had to see a doc-tor who put him on steroids. Then he went to a chiro-practor to release some tension in his shoulder (he sees one regularly). Is there anything you can suggest? He's otherwise extremely fit and healthy. Aimee Hartley

A. Dear Aimee, in my experience, I have noticed that a lot of headache activity is caused when there is not a balanced flow of energy in the body, especially if the upper chest is locked or not fully opened. Sometimes the chest will move but there is still a holding onto the exhale which will cause energy and pressure to build up in the system, and thus manifest in headaches.

If his chest is open and there is a nice flow throughout the respiratory system then it could be that he is ac-cessing some old traumas in the head surfacing from the subconscious, which is not the usual situation. Be sure and prop him up as high as possible to insure movement in the chest and upper body. If he is not strong in his belly then go back to that and deep "body map" in the lower belly to make sure that area is really open and able to support full integration. Hoping that is helpful. Love and hugs, Judi

*Editor’s Notes: TIBA-Africa has come a long way, spawn-ing several qualified Trainers,

but more importantly providing aid to the needy - a needfulness of which Western nations cannot easily imagine. We implore readers to give as they are able. TBF thanks Andria Falk, Ange Leake, and our partners at TBF-UK for being a primary leader and sponsor in ways financial and beyond, and also Marco and Jacquelien de Ja-ger for their groundwork years before.

This Tourism connection is a great idea - Nature and Breath. Most of us certainly see Kenya and African wildlife only in movies and television documentaries but never think about seeing it for real. Forget Disney, and all those “touristy” places with the long lines and vapid thrills. Take a vacation you’ll never forget.+

then you have done your job. I can't imagine she would resist that. Love and big hugs , Judi

Cleansing and Illness

Q. Is it possible to bring on illness as the bodily systems are cleansing?

A. Dear Nancy, yes, many times folks will go through a major cleansing after doing a number of sessions in a row. The body when breathing so vigorously and so often, goes into detoxing in a big way. This is no differ-ent from any cleansing experience in this respect, so folks can get rashes, headaches, colds, fevers, general fatigue, and other symptoms of body cleansing. I would continue the breathing to support the cleansing pro-cess. Breathing in Love, Judith

Sleepy During Self-sessions

Q. Hi Judith, Been feeling sleepy during sessions. Today, I started my sixth self-session around noon. I wasn't particularly tired, but this was a king-sized sleepy session. I don't know if it is sleep, unconscious energy, or "going back to source" but I "woke up" at one point hearing you toning on the Guided Session, and for a few moments I didn't realize what I was listening to. Is this a typical progression? Warmest regards, Jim

A. Dear Jim, I have experienced a time when I would leave my body a lot during my sessions. It was pleasant enough to experience and yet I felt that I wanted to get more out of the breathing. Then at some point, I just stopped leaving and was present for the breathing and integration. No more “sleepiness”. I feel that when someone stops breathing and leaves there are several things that could be going on. One is the “unconscious source urge”, (which I definitely had going on) and the other is creating a pathway to higher dimensions to enable us to access them more easily. In your situation I feel both things are going on and to continue to breathe without judging or evaluating the experience because inte-gration is happening even when you leave. If you are doing your invocations then I know the perfect session is happen-ing. One day you will just stop leaving and you will miss it. Love and hugs, Judi

Behind the Pain

Q. Client has severe pain in her right thigh and knee, and the pain is heightened during a session. After lengthy coaching she sees that she is stuck in moving forward in her life. She is an atheist, and does not realize any higher power - feels like she is just "a blade of grass in a huge science experiment". I wanted to know if you had any suggestions for coaching and facilitation. Much Love, Mary

A. Dear Mary, I have worked with atheists before and I work more with the spiritual qualities that are within them vs. any-thing or presence outside. I am curious as to what her goal or intentions are for sessions. Is it just to address physical pain? If you can begin to tie some mental/emotional components to what is going on with her physically then that can begin to take her deeper. Sometimes folks get caught up in the words. When she experiences love and peace, in her sessions

It's often more rewarding to read a book in your native language.

A project long in the making, "Breathe Deep, Laugh Loudly"

has been expertly translated into German.

"Atme tief - Lebe intensive" is the result of a project driven by Dianne Mecklenburg of Switzerland, and the hard work of others including Monika Kind, Christian Müller, and Friedrich Hartmann.

This translation of the 3rd English edition (2007) is fully indexed at the back and is available as an eBook and online at $12.95 US. The paperback will soon be sold through various Amazon sites at $19.95 US.

We have 3 other authorized translations of Judith’s book available!

DUTCH: We had previously profiled the Dutch translation by Marcel Gerrits called, “Adem diep, lach voluit”. It is still in pa-perback , but we have since offered an eBook version.

ITALIAN: The Italian translation, “Respira Profondamente e fai

il Pieno di Energia” is online at the MyLife Store.

TURKISH: Last but not least, a Turkish version is actually one of the earliest translations. It too is available in Paperback.
