July Birthdays

Our August luncheon is always one of the most important luncheons of the year because it’s when we elect our officers and directors for the fol-

lowing year. That event is the culmination of the work done by the nominating com-mittee. So in a way, the success and the future of the organization rests in the hands of that committee. July, 2006 Sunshine Report

At the July luncheon I was sorry to report that both Roy Miller and Richard Schlueter had passed away. It was a difficult month for our Branch since a few weeks earlier we learned that Terry Thomas and Ernie Purcell had passed away. Since the July luncheon I have not heard of any other problems experienced by our SIR members. Hopefully will all continue to stay healthy during these warm sum-mer months.

Jim Nachtweih

Attendance

Attendance at the July 17th meeting totaled 194 per-sons. This includes 188 members, 2 speakers and 4 guests. There were 51 excused members and 15 un-excused members. The unexcused members will be asked to pay for their missed lunch.

The big trip for July (10th through 14th) was to New Melones Reservoir near Angels Camp. Ten members, including Branch 116’s Dick Thomson and Terry Miller, enjoyed a week’s fishing at this beautiful (and this year totally full) reservoir. The damming of the Stanislaus River created a lake with a surface area of 12,500 acres and over 100 miles of tree covered shoreline. As expected, the daytime air temperature was 90 and, on Monday, went well over 100 degrees. Surface water temperature was from 76 to 84 degrees and the fish were DEEP (80+ feet), so downriggers were the order of the day. De-spite the happenstance of a full and bright moon, every fisherman caught fish, and, as a group, we had well over 30 Kokanee in the boats. The fish av-eraged 2 pounds each and fought well. So, you really knew you had something when you brought them in. We welcomed two new boats on this trip. Branch 8’s Bill Hooy has a new SeaRay (17.5 feet) with kicker and Bimini. Branch 116’s Dick Thomson has a “like new” Striper Walk Around (18.5 feet). Both boats ran wonderfully well under difficult conditions (the hot weather) and are great additions to our “fleet”. We look forward to many great trips with these new craft. Branch 19’s Al Brunner, the fishmaster on this trip, had our fishermen in the lap of luxury, staying in luxurious condos at Angels Camp and eating out at local restaurants (Chinese one night, Mex another and pizza for the third). We even bought Subway sandwiches for lunches. What a deal!!! Notwith-standing, it wasn’t clear that, despite the Subway ads, any of our fishermen lost weight as a result of eating these fine sandwiches. All told, it was a great trip and much was learned for next year’s trip. As an aside, Chef Bill Hooy (Branch 8) combined some of the skills he picked up in the Cooking Group to prepare a meal of Kokanee for his son and his family (7 adults) on Friday after getting back from the trip. The fish were barbequed in foil and served with baked peppers (red, green, yellow and orange, onions, baby corn and Mexican green pep-pers), cumin rice and green salad. Desert was Hagan Daz ice cream on a stick. What a great meal!!!! Nothing like fresh fish.

Craig Walton of Branch 8 conducted a halibut trip into San Francisco Bay at the end of June. Riders included Branch 116’s Terry Miller (our Big Fish) and Branch 19’s Joe Peterson. They caught 2 nice sized halibut (Craig an 8# and Terry a 6#). On July 17th Branch 8’s Rich Bal, his son-in-law Robert Higbee, grandson Sam (11 years old), Bob Olson of Branch 116, Ed Dijkman and Tom Click went out of the Golden Gate on the Dandy out of Emery-ville to catch salmon. The weather was perfect and the sea was calm. Grandson Sam out fished every-one, landing 5 (4 keepers) and hauling in the big-gest fish of the day (a 34 pound salmon). Needless to say, Sam took home the whole fishing pool money. Great going, Sam!!! The Fishing Group has now compiled the regular listing of fishermen, who want to fish in the Delta (our “Gotta Fish the Delta Group”). This now has 8 boat owners and 10 non-boat owners signed up. We should be able to make a number of good pairings off from this mix. There will be much to report in the future about “adventures” in this prime fishery. As far as the next three months are concerned, the Group plans: • Day trips out the Golden Gate for Salmon

(dates are open - Ed Dijkman is Fishmaster); • Summer Backyard Picnic (August 20th - Al

Brunner is Fishmaster); • Various day trips to the Delta for stripers (dates

and schedules are open and based on independ-ent arrangements between fishermen and boat owners in the “Gotta Fish the Delta Group”);

• Trip to the Eastern Sierra (Bridgeport) for trout (September 17th to 19th - John Wall is Fish-master);

• Trip to Viera’s near Rio Vista for stripers (date open - probably in September - Terry Miller is Fishmaster);

• Camping trip to Medicine Lake in the high Si-erra for trout (September 24th through 28th - Joe Karg is Fishmaster);

• Trip to Lake Davis for pike/trout (October 1 through 4 - Joe Karg is Fishmaster);

• Trip to Eagle Lake for trout (October 22nd through 27th - Craig Walton is Fishmaster);

There is much more to come so, “if you‚re not fish-ing you‚re not trying”. (cont. on page 5)

The team of Cord Hull, Ron Leschot, Alex Sarran and Donald Cochrane tied the team of Jim Nachtweih, Bob Daily, Dick Chaffee, Jai Yee and Tim Tinnes. There was also a tie for individual scoring honors. David Geary and Dick Chaffee both had 33 fol-lowed by Donald Cochrane with a 34. Closest to the Pin on hole 5 was won by Tim Tinnes with a clutch shot 6 inches inside of David Geary who was second. Bill Stoll was third. Honorable mention goes to Jim Nachtweih who also hit the green.

Happy Nonhooker Golf Balls In order to eliminate the hook or slice from a golfers game, scientists experimented with changes to the dimpled golf ball. Since the dimples aid in producing lift, they removed the dimples from two sides of the ball and left a strip of dimples around the equator. Then if you line up the ball on the tee such that the dimpled band is in the vertical plane, you can mini-mize the side force imparted by a spin about the verti-cal axis while still receive the benefits of the backspin. This ball was known as the Polara or the happy non-hooker.

However, the United States Golfing Association soon became concerned that this ball would "reduce the skill required to play golf and threaten the integrity of the game." So they amended the rules to require that a "golf ball be designed to have equal aerodynamic properties and equal moments of inertia about any axis through its center." This new rule effectively made the happy nonhooker illegal.
