The woollen textile industry in India is small in size and scattered.

few larger units re located in Maharashtra, Punjab UP, Gujarat and
West Bengal.

YEAR Quantity ( in million kg)
2004-05 76.212005-06 82.34
2006-07 86.12
The woollen industry in India broadly falls under 2 sectors:
1)Organized Sector:a.Composite Millsb.Combing Millsc. Worsted & non-worsted spinning unitsd.Machine made carpet-manufacturing units
2)Decentralized Sector:a.Hosiery & Knittingb.Power loomc. Hand knotted carpets, Druggets and Namdhas.d.Independent dyeing processing houses.
Since, indigenous production of fine quality wool required by the
organized mill & decentralized hosiery sector is very limited, India
depends largely on imports, Australia being the largest supplier. New
