Ushiro Waza

Ushiro waza is a part of our Traditional aikido curriculum which is perhaps a bit underexposed when compared to the more basic, frontal techniques.

All techiniques that can be performed from the more common basic frontal attacks van also be performed as ushiro waza techniques which means it forms a rather large part of the syllabus.

The training of ushiro waza techniques greatly enhances the “whole body feeling”. Human beings are typically rather frontal oriented, practicing these techniques opens up the feeling in the spine and the space behind us.

During these classes we will explore different techniques from various ushiro waza attacks, as well as the levels of kihon and ki-no-nagare.

Ken-tai-jo

Both the kumitachi and kumijo explore weaponwork through same-weapon partner exercises. The similar dimensions of the weapons as well as the similar “rhythm” of the weaponwork allows a relatively easy access to the forms.

With ken-tai-jo we pair two weapons with different dimensions, different uses and a different “rhythm” while searching for the same qualities we can find in the kumitachi and kumijo.

Ma-ai, timing and awase are difficult to access in the ken-tai- jo which makes this set of excercises challenging and interesting.

In this seminar we will go step by step through all the main details involved, taking the practice from basic to more advanced levels.
