Atemi Waza

Atemi waza is an important aspect of aikido techniques in Takemusu aikido. Atemi can draw out a response from uke, disrupt uke’s posture, temporarily distract uke or simply finish a technique.

Many techniques will not function properly if atemi is taken out of the equation. A proper understanding of atemi waza is important to understand the techniques. It is a key element in understanding where the “windows in a technique are and how to close them.

During these classes we will both practice the technical aspects of how to perform a proper atemi as well as how to apply atemi in various techniques.

Kuzushi

The term “kuzushi” in martial arts refers to unbalancing uke, disrupting the physycal structure of uke. This makes uke temporarily vulnerable and opens up a window to apply a technique.

In aikido we often refer to “taking uke’s balance”. Although kuzushi is closely related it is also a more refined concept which includes more then the physical breaking of uke’s balance. In includes the state of mind of both uke and nage as well as their motivation. Kuzushi “happens” upon first contact.

In this seminar we will go step by step through all the main details involved in kuzushi, taking the practice from basic to more advanced levels, studying and practicing the intricacies involved.
