Autonomous vehicles - Trends

Smart Cars Report, January 201612

• Connectivity in cars is increasing and it is predicted that 1 in 5 cars would be connected to internet by 2020.

• Connected cars are inevitable and this has the potential to change the revenue share of the automotive pie.

• Premium segment vehicles are already using internet connected infotainment, real time navigation as differentiators.

• Telecom, digital and consumer electronics players have identified a new opportunity in automotive market.

• OBD2 is already mandatory for cars in USA and Europe. It is in the process of becoming mandatory in emerging markets as well.

• Although started for car diagnostics, OBD2 data along with internet connectivity has unleashed a possibility of various remote services.

• This has led to a surge of startups providing OBD2 device based services like car security, driver behavior analysis, teen driver monitoring, remote diagnostics, alerts to service stations, dealers, etc.

• OBD based startups have received one of the highest funding in the last 5 years in the smart cars space.

• Two major use cases for OBDII based services are Fleet management and Usage based Insurance. Many startups in this field have received significant interests and traditional players have either collaborated with the startups or have started their own services.

• Telecom players and connectivity enablers like hardware providers have a new area of growth. Providing internet connectivity and wi fi in cars could be the next driver of growth for telecom players.

• Digital players like Google and Apple are also providing infotainment solutions for cars as cars could have a potential for huge data based services in the future. Real time geo-location, seamless integration with smartphones and natural user interfaces like voice or gesture based commands are also amongst the focus areas of development.

• Startups like Swift Navigation in this area have seen significant funding interest. A consortium of Audi, BMW and Daimler acquired HERE which provides digital maps from Nokia in August 2015.
