Earlier in April, the students and staff of TCMPS participated in the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events, designed to promote and recognize the importance of being active and at the same time promote awareness of heart disease and stroke. TCMPS raised $12,259.95 this year to help fund life saving research into heart disease and stroke. This brings TCMPS’ grand total donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation to approximately $282,219.00! We would like to thank all the students, staff and parents for your generous support!

On April 16th and 17th, the grade 3, 4 and 5 students rocked the school as they performed in our Spring Concert. With the accompaniment of a terrific concert band, the students sang and danced to the rock and roll songs from the 1950’s. From the stage set, to the lights and sound, and the colourful costumes, everyone was impressed with the concert. Thank you to our wonderful Music teachers, Ms. Emily Yoon and Mr. Danny Friedman who did an outstanding job. Many thanks to the enthusiastic students and the dedicated staff for their hard work! Bravo!

Grade 7 and 8 Gauss Mathematics Contest

Each year our grade 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to participate in the Gauss Mathematics Contest which is organized by the University of Waterloo. The contest serves as another means of enriching the Mathematics program at TCMPS. The students and staff have been very busy preparing for the upcoming contest, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14th. On this day, we ask that you ensure your child arrives promptly at school as the contest commences at 9:00 a.m. We would like to wish all of our students the best of luck in this challenging contest.

Halpern’s Uniform Sale Day

Parents and guardians are reminded that on Tuesday, June 3rd, the official uniform supplier for the school, Halpern’s, will be in the Main Gymnasium from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. to give parents an opportunity to purchase their child’s uniform for the upcoming school year. Halpern’s staff, along with TCMPS staff, will be available to help you with your child’s measurements, sizing and purchases. Parents are welcome to bring their children into the Main Gymnasium as this will help with accurate sizing. Our aim is to have our students looking their best and wearing their uniform with pride.

After School Courses: Observation Classes

Within the next few weeks parents who have children registered in certain After School Courses will be receiving invitations to the After School Courses Observation Classes to view performances or a special class. Information regarding dates and times will be provided soon. Parents are asked to note that the last day of regularly scheduled After School Courses program for term 3 will be on Wednesday, May 21st. Thank you to all the parents for supporting the After School Courses.

The elementary yearbook is a wonderful keepsake for your family. The yearbook captures special moments from September 2013 through June 2014, displayed on 80 pages of full colour within an embossed hardcover. We are now taking orders for the yearbook which can be purchased for $40.00 through the school’s Main Office or online at www.jostensyearbooks.com by entering “Town Centre Montessori Elementary School”. Yearbooks will be distributed in October 2014. On behalf of the yearbook committee, we hope that you and your child enjoy this memorable book.

Teams and Clubs Photo Day

Please note that the Teams and Clubs Photo Day which was originally scheduled for April 24th has been rescheduled to Monday, May 26th. All students who were on an elementary SSAF sports team for this school year will have their team photo taken. All participating students are required to have their school uniform, gym uniform, and team uniform (SSAF jersey and shorts) for this photo day.

Scarborough Reader’s Choice Awards

TCMPS has been nominated for the Scarborough Mirror Reader’s Choice 2014 Awards, which recognizes local businesses. We would like to ask everyone to vote for TCMPS in the categories of “Best Montessori School” and “Best Private School”. The contest is now open to the public for voting until June 1st. Please fill out a ballot in the Scarborough Mirror newspaper or go online to www.insidetoronto.com/contests/. Thank you for your ongoing support!

“Hi! I am Abhishek, the president of the SAC. So far, this year has been a blast with all of the

events that were organized by the SAC. The SAC has participated in many fun activities and

have organized many enjoyable events for the grade 7 and 8 students. In October, we had a

great time at the Halloween Dance and continued with the excitement of the Christmas Dance.

We delivered the toys from the Toy Drive to the hospital and helped clean up Highgate Park.

This year has been filled with so many memorable moments with my fellow classmates and I’m

sure that there will be many more as the grade 7 students travel to Ottawa and the grade 8 stu-

dents head to Quebec for their end of year trips. I can’t believe that the end of the school year is

almost here! All the grade 8 students are eagerly looking forward to graduation!”

The TCMPS SUMMER CAMP DAY will take place on Friday, May 30th. This day is a fun filled event intended to promote school spirit. Our grade 1 to 6 students will participate in a variety of Summer Camp activities which will take place outdoors in our playfield. The students will also be participating in exciting class activities. Please ensure that your child attends TCMPS Summer Camp Day prepared with running shoes and attired in the same coloured clothing as their House League team, the Red Rockets, the Blue Bombers, the Yellow Stingers or the Green Hornets.

TCMPS Summer Camp Day

On Tuesday, April 22nd, the members of the Student Activity Council, accompanied by Mr. Lamanna, observed Earth Day by cleaning up Highgate Park. Markham City Counselor, Alex Chiu, came out to greet the students and show his appreciation. Thank you SAC for doing a great job!

April is mid-term month in the high school. For our grade 12 students, this means that their grades are sent off to the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) and, for many, the offers of admission have already begun to roll in! Parents and students are reminded that registration continues for our high school summer courses; these include 2 grade 9 credit courses that are open to students currently enrolled in grade 8 at Town Centre, as well as other full credit courses for students in grades 9 to 12. For more information, please contact the High School Office. Over the past several weeks, the directors, cast and crew of our high school play, The Breakfast Club, have been working very hard to ensure the performance is ready to go. This year’s play is an adaptation of the classic 1985 John Hughes film in which 5 very different teenagers find themselves thrown together in less than ideal circumstances. The play touches on “young adult” themes and, as such, is recommended for older children and adults. This year, the school play will be part of a larger “Arts Night” at the school. In addition to the play, there will be a performance by the high school Senior Band, and a public display of art work from our various high school Art classes. There will be 2 opportunities for people to attend these performances: Thursday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m. This matinee performance will be open to all Town Centre grade 7 and 8 students. Advance tickets are available now at a cost of $5.00. We hope to see you there!
