The Joy of Taking the Next Step

For most of human history, people have gotten around by walking from one place to another. People might have ridden a donkey, horse, camel, or even an elephant. Eventually, the horse might be hitched to a cart, and people around water rowed or sailed boats. Then, along came locomotives, steam powered ships, bicycles, automobiles, airplanes, and even rocket ships. Human ingenuity has revolutionized travel, providing freedom to do remarkable things

The convenience and advantage of modern travel amazes me, and I appreciate it. Sometimes, I even get caught up in the glitz and glamour of it all. But, as I’ve discovered these past 17 months in walking around town at every opportunity, there is real joy of walking. I’m in better shape. I take the time to greet others on the street. I read more books (no kidding!). I am more aware of my environment and the seasons. I now have “green space” in my life, and do less overbooking. I occasionally follow in Bob Bush’s “footsteps” of picking up trash. In my decision to walk, I purposely identify with the many, many people who walk every day out of necessity. Here’s how others speak of the joy of walking:

A dad posts a video on Facebook and proudly announces, “Yesterday, our child took her first step.”

Following successful hip surgery, a woman smiles and says, “I can get around now without pain.”

A man in a mechanized wheel chair sighs, “This gets me around, but I’d give anything to walk again.”

A wise sage repeats the saying, “A journey of a hundred miles begins with a single step.”

It’s been said “Life is a journey which consists of a series of steps.” With each of my 12,700 steps I take throughout the day on average, I’ve become more aware of the gift which has been given to me. And with each step, I and others benefit.

From now through November 13th, our whole church is taking The Next Step. It is a theme with an emphasis on stewardship. What are you going to do with the gift of life you have received? How are you going to spend your time and money? Just as human beings are built to walk, we are built to give. Over the next 40 days or so, we’ll all be asked to prayerfully assess how our lives reflect the life of Jesus who walked and talked as he journeyed through ancient Galilee. You may have yet to take a first step in the giving path. You may be taking the first steps in recovering the ability to give. You may be a sometimes giver and are taking the next step into regular giving. You may regularly “tip God” with a token offering, and be on the verge of giving a proportion of your income or wealth. Step up to the challenge. You’ll experience the joy that comes with stepping down the path of giving.

Thursday, October 27th Trunk or Treat 5:00 - 7:00 pm

Hey Church Family, Do you like to dress up for Halloween but don’t have an excuse to do it. Well now you do! Every year we host Trunk or Treat for the downtown Halloween party and we need you. We are looking for folks who would be willing to come for an hour and run carnival games and hand out prizes to the community. Folks of all ages are welcome to participate though children will need an adults help to run the carnival games. We are also in need of candy. Last year we gave out almost 900 gift bags and that is not counting the candy we handed out during the games. So if you want to have fun while dressed as a Jedi or ninja this is your night. If you want to help, please contact Chris ([email protected]) and he will add you to the list. Shifts run from 5:00 to 6:00 and 6:00-7:00 Thursday, October 27th.

FUMC Official Board Meeting

Meeting Minutes, September 17, 2016

Attendance: Shannon Nolte, Joni Adkins, Jenni Wall, Carole Couts, Pastor Scott Moon,

Mark Thomsen, Deb Garrett, and Bob Cooper.

Pastor Scott opened the meeting with a scripture reading and prayer.

Financial Report:

Current Financial Status: Bob Cooper shared a br ief overview of the revenue and expenses. Bob reminded us to keep communicating to our members the need to focus on our cash position in the General Fund which keeps slipping each month.

The Next Step Stewardship Update: As stated at our last meeting through our fall stewardship drive we need to prayerfully look at ourselves, our family and assess what our portion should be in the ministry of the church. “What is God calling me to do with my life? Life is to be spent and spent well!” When this philosophy is in place you can tell it in our giving. We need to continually grow in our discipleship. Pastor/Leadership Report: Pastor Scott led us in a discussion about the approval process of certified lay servants and candidacy for ministry. As a Board, the decision was made to table the consideration for the one candidate for ministry and to do our homework on getting to know this candidate. Personnel Stewards Report: After Pastor Scott excused himself from the meeting, Jenni Wall presented the 2017 Pastoral Support package. After discussion, Jenni motioned to accept the Pastoral Support package, seconded by Carole Couts, motion passed. Jenni and Carole both stated we need to request from the Conference the peer averages to better assess the pay scale for our pastor. The Personnel committee stated they strongly wanted to give Pastor Scott an increase but need to consider the other employees increases this year. Upcoming Meeting Dates: Cluster Charge Conference will be held Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 2 pm. Our next Board Meeting has been scheduled for October 18, 2016 at 6:15 pm.

Prayer Teams

You are invited to be a part of the Prayer Team Ministry at FUMC whether you are making a permanent commitment or just want to "come and see", groups meet several times during the week in the Prayer Chapel (just across from the church office). Each group that meets in the Prayer Chapel, share or read the joys and concerns, offer silent prayer and then depart (at least as a group) after 30 minutes.

If your schedule will not allow you to attend your regular group, you may choose to participate at the time from wherever you are, you can choose to attend at another Prayer Group time, or you may come to the Chapel on your own at another time, whenever the church is open. It is designed to be a very relaxed atmosphere, and we hope you will give it a try.

How do you join a prayer team? Just show up at one of the given times below, contact David or Carol Baird or the church office for more information.

Cool fall mornings are a reminder that the annual FUMC UMW’s Election Day Bazaar is not far away! The date is Tuesday, November 8th at the corner of First and Main Streets in Maryville. The 2016 theme is “Growing in Faith and Patriotism”. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. ~ John 15:13. The event begins at 7 am with the various booths opening and warm fresh made donuts and rolls, along with coffee and juice offered in “Food For The Spirit”. “First Lady's Feast” will be filled with bake sale items....homemade cookies, cakes and pies, jams and jellies, and jars of fresh canned salsa, relish, jams, and jellies. Visit “Abe's Library” to pick up a new or good used book or puzzle. Scrap bookers won't want to miss checking out the supplies, tools, and papers, and other items in “”Yankee Doodle Dandy”. “Gifts of Glory” will offer shoppers an opportunity to purchase gifts for that special someone. Hand sewn, crocheted, stitched and crafted items will fill the “Made in the USA” booth. A vintage feed sack fabric hand stitched twin size quilt, 60”X78”, “Red Dahlia”, along with accessories, will be offered by silent auction in “Americana Treasure”. You will not be required to turn in registration materials if you attend this meeting. Besides registration information, we will also look over the trip itinerary and syllabus in order to have a better understanding of where we are going and what we should expect. The Society for Biblical Studies encourages travelers to read a few books related to our trip, and Dr. Romig will have copies of some of these texts for you to examine. The trip is a 10-day journey through Israel and Palestine and the cost is $3297. You do not need to be a member or attend First UMC to participate on this journey.

Sunday, November 13th Ninja Lawn Ninja Yard Raking and bonfire. You may not believe it but at some point you might find it difficult to go out and rake the leaves. Ninja Yard Raking is when we as a youth group scour Maryville for folks who could use a helping hand with their yard. We strike with a raking fury and disappear without a trace leaving not a leaf to blow in the wind. Ok, so there might be one or two leaves left, but the point is we helped someone out and it was fun doing it. Then that night we will celebrate with S'mores over a warm fire and talk about why Jesus would care if we rake someone's yard.

Sunday Night Youth Gatherings October 23rd, November 6th & 20th Middle School: will meet in the Fellowship hall from 5:30-6:30pm for club, games and faith talks. Sr. High: will meet at the Komorech’s home from 7:17-8:30pm, we'll eat, play, spend time in fellowship and study the Bible. 25979 247th Street, Maryville, MO 64468.

Confirmation Continues Students 7th-8th grade will participate in confirmation on Sunday mornings where we will discuss the church, what it means to be a Christ Follower and to be a participant in the Kingdom of God. We ask students to find a mentor who will support them through this process. Most months confirmation is the 2nd & 4th Sunday of the month. Mentors are invited to join us on the 4th Sunday starting this September. Confirmation ends on Palm Sunday when eighth graders are confirmed and welcomed into the church. Confirmation Sundays:

I wanted to thank everyone for all of the prayers, cards, and flowers I received after my recent surgery. I am at home now and my recovery is going well.

Jack and I would also like to thank everyone for the many cards we received to celebrate our 65th wedding anniversary. We both feel blessed to have such loving family and friends and we appreciate all of the kind wishes and heartfelt thoughts.

Thank you again.

~ Jack and Sam Willhoyte

To the members of the Methodist Church,

The ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha would like to thank you so much for letting us host our spaghetti dinner at your church this past Saturday. It would not have been nearly as successful had we not had such a wonderful venue. We cannot begin to express how much we appreciate all that you do for us but it is with great pleasure we give you this donation as a small token of our immeasurable gratitude. We look forward to working together again in the future. Thank you again!

~ The Ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha

Thank you for all the cards, calls, visits and flowers over my extended illness. I have really appreciated them all. When received, they have lifted my spirits and day.

~ Sally Johnson

"What is your Next Step? We are often asked to PRAY: “What would God have me do?” “What would God have done through me within the Church?” “What is next for our church?” As we try to DISCERN, we reflect on our mission of making disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the world. We think about past congregations and programs. We consider changes in our building. We look for how everything works toward our goal of connecting people at life’s crossroads. We REJOICE as new families join us, as visitors comment upon our new spaces and their possibilities, as we sense growing excitement and commitment in our church family. But what Next? It becomes A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY. We see how richly God has blessed us. We respond with generous thanks. Growing in faith, we step up and are blessed ever more richly.”
