A DREAM COME TRUE While jockey RichardHughes was asking the question of Oasis Dream (GB)(Green Desert) in the G1 Darley July Cup, JohnnyMurtagh was pressing the panic button aboard Choisirand, despite the Aussie giant’s game response to thecall to arms, he could not find as much as the winneron the notorious uphill climb. “I actually missed the kickas he was standing so quiet,” explained Hughes, com-pleting an afternoon stakes double. “Rather than givehim a slap on the shoulder to get out in front, I left himbe and he pinged away from the gate. Having been alength down on the horse beside me within 50 yards hewas in front of him. Johnny was going well on thefence, but I was going equally as well. When I got tohim he went again and the two of us were level peg-ging for a good 50 yards but then I outstayed him.” Forconditioner John Gosden, it was vindication of the planto bypass the mile Classics and concentrate on thesprinting route. Despite being a half to G1 Poule d’Essaides Pouliches heroine Zenda (GB), there was bountifulevidence that speed was Oasis Dream’s forte when hebroke the six-furlong track record at the Rowley Mile inwinning the G1 Middle Park S. in October. He report-edly needed the race when returning to be third tobehind Choisir under a penalty for that success in theG2 King’s Stand S. at Royal Ascot June 17, and movedforward off that effort to just miss Stravinsky’s 1999track record. As for the colt’s next start, Gosden said,“We’ll be looking at the G1 Nunthorpe S. [at York Aug.21].” He is unlikely to meet Choisir in that five-furlongtest and the Australian colt’s trainer Paul Perry wasphilosophical afterwards, commenting, “He’s beenbeaten by a horse that was trained for the race. Thewinner was on his way up, while we were probably juston the way down. He’s done the job he came here forand it was a very courageous effort to finish second ina race that was really just an afterthought.” TrainerHenry Candy, however, is pointing the 11-4 secondchoice Airwave (GB) (Air Express {Ire}), who overcamea troubled trip to finish third, at a rematch over fivefurlongs. “Kieren [Fallon] had some trouble getting arun and she might have been a bit unlucky, althoughshe would not have have beaten the winner,” he said.“We will train her for the Nunthorpe.”

Settled in a stalking role on the far fenceby Richard Hughes as Chester Le Street was sent to thefront by Darryll Holland, he made smooth progress tochallenge that rival and reeled him in up the hill to as-sert in the final strides. “It took a while to get past theMark Johnston horse, as usual, but he’s a very bravelittle horse,” Hughes commented. “The only concernwas that it was a little bit fast. CLIFDEN TOPS TATTERSALLS Sheikh Rashid binMohammed al Maktoum, son of Sheikh Mohammed, bought the top lot at the 2003 Tattersalls July Saleyesterday when paying 170,000gns through agentDavid Metcalfe for the Italian Group 3 winner Clifden(Ire) (Gold Away {Ire}), who sold as Lot 498. SheikhRashid, who won Wednesday's G2 TNT July S. atNewmarket with Nevisian Lad, will keep the juvenilewith his present trainer Mark Wallace for the rest of theseason. “We liked the horse very much and he’s alreadya Group 3 winner,” said Metcalfe, who saw off DavidRedvers to get the colt. “He will go back to Mark, whohas done really well this season.” Wallace, who hasmade a great start to his training career, was happywith the transaction and said, “I’m delighted, especiallyas he’s coming back to me. The owners have had agood touch and I still get to train the horse.” The JulySale turnover fell by 11 percent from 2002, althoughthe 11,285gns average was a new high and the6,000gns median, although never bettered, had beenachieved five times before. Edmond Mahony, theTattersalls chairman, said, “It is hard to draw too manyconclusions from a mixed sale such as the July Sale, but as ever we have seen a truly cosmopolitan cast ofbuyers at Park Paddocks this week which has produceda record average and turnover second only to lastyear’s sale, which was significantly larger. There havebeen a number of individual highlights, most notablythe 170,000gns for the Group 3-winning two-year-oldClifden, which is a record for a two-year-old at thissale, but the crucial element has been the clearancerate. Very few horses have failed to find buyers whichis a massive endorsement of the enduring popularity ofthis sale. Quality consignments from so many of themajor owner/breeders, including Cheveley Park Stud,Darley, Juddmonte, Gainsborough Stud Managementand Shadwell Estates, have made a huge contributionto the continued development of the July Sale and it isgreat to see such support rewarded.”

CHAMPION WAYWARD LASS DEAD WaywardLass (Hail the Pirates--Young Mistress, by Third Mar-tini), champion three-year-old filly of 1981, died in lateJune at Contemporary Stallions in Coxsackie, NewYork. She was 25. The Flying Zee Stables colorbearerwon two-thirds of the Triple Tiara as a three-year-old in1981, capturing the GI Mother Goose S. and GI Coach-ing Club American Oaks, via disqualification, on herway to championship honors. A winner of six stakesevents, she finished on the board in 22 of 25 startswhile earning $435,237 for trainer Jose Martin. Shewas retired after her sophomore campaign and went onto produce 12 winners from 14 starters. Wayward Lasswas in foal to Contemporary stallion City Zip when shedied. She was buried on the farm.

Wednesday Spill Update: Jockey Luis Chavez sustained a broken right collar-bone and a cut right hand in a three-horse spill duringWednesday’s ninth race at Aqueduct. It is uncertainhow long he will be out of action. The other two ridersinvolved were Javier Castellano and apprentice Shan-non Uske. Castellano walked off the track uninjured, while Uske was taken to North Shore University Hospi-tal with abdominal pain. She was released Wednesdaynight. “She’s just beat up,” said her agent, RalphTheroux Jr. “They did a CAT scan, internal sonogramand x-rays, and everything came back negative.” Uskeis expected to be back in the saddle within a week. Thethree horses which fell are all doing well, according toNYRA’s chief examining veterinarian Dr. Celeste Kunz.“We gave them a good look over after the race,” shesaid. “They were more shocked than anything else.”
