POLYDREAM TOO GOOD IN LONGCHAMP FEATUREThe Gr.3 Prix de La Porte Maillot, the feature race at Longchamp yesterday, was won in classy style by last year’s Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Polydream.

The four-year-old daughter of Oasis Dream, trained by Freddy Head, raced as the back marker of the six-runner field as Trois Mille (Evasive) set a good pace up front. The pace steadied up as they turned for home and Maxime Guyon pulled Polydream out to make her challenge. She quickened up smartly, hit the front in a matter of strides and ran on to score by a half a length from Marianafoot (Footstepsinthesand). Spinning Memories (Arcano) was a length and a half back in third.

Polydream landed the Gr.2 Prix du Calvados at two before coming second to Wild Illusion in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac. At three, she claimed the Gr.3 Prix du Palais-Royal before going on to Gr.1 glory in the Prix Maurice de Gheest.

Homebred by Wertheimer et Frere, she is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix Sigy winner Big Brothers Pride (Invincible Spirit), out of the Listed Prix d’Angerville winner Polygreen (Green Tune).

The nine-year-old son of Halling set off in front and soon opened up a two-length lead. His jumping was mixed, but he still held his advantage going into the straight where he clattered the second-last. This season’s Gr.3 Fred Winter winner Band Of Outlaws (Fast Company), now racing for JP McManus, gave chase, but Thomas Hobson held on to score by a neck. Like An Open Book (Well Chosen) just pipped Tombstone (Robin Des Champs) to third by a head and they were a long way clear of the field’s only other runner Plinth (Montjeu).

More than useful on the Flat, as well as over hurdles, Thomas Hobson has now won 11 times in both codes, including the Gr.2 Leamington Novices’ Hurdle and the Gr.2 Doncaster Cup. In 2017, he won the Ascot Stakes at the Royal Meeting before turning out four days later and finishing second in the Queen Alexandra Stakes and the year before he was third in the Gr.1 Champion Novice Hurdle.

Bred by Mount Coote Stud and Mark Dixon, he was bought for 35,000gns from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 by Blandford Bloodstock and for £240,000 at the Doncaster November Horses in Training Sale two years later. He is out of the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes-placed La Spezia (Danehill Dancer), who is a half-sister to the Listed-winning hurdler and Gr.1-placed chaser Torphichen (Alhaarth). This is the family of the Gr.1 Oaks heroine Talent (New Approach).

INDUSTRY NEWSBRITAIN

BREEDING INDUSTRY PROJECTS RECEIVE SIZEABLE RACING FOUNDATION FUNDSThe Racing Foundation has committed over half a million pounds in funds over the next five years, aimed at improving the long term sustainability of the thoroughbred breeding industry, both equine and human, through a new strategic partnership with the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA). A total of £570,000 has been ring fenced for projects from 1st April 2019 which will be delivered as part of the TBA’s strategic plan over the next five years.

The son of Dialed In, trained by Robert Cowell, was awkward out of the stalls, but soon settled on the outside of runners. He quickened up well a furlong and a half out and soon joined Air Force Jet (Charm Spirit) before going on to score eased down by three quarters of a length, with Isabeau (Cable Bay) a half-length back in third.

Strive For Glory, whom Cowell picked up for $80,000 as a yearling at Keeneland last September, had won at Newcastle on debut and was third in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown before coming fourth in the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

Bred by Michael and Amy Feuerborn, he is the first foal out of the US Stakes winner Chu And You (You And I), whose grandam, an unraced daughter of Seattle Slew, is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Santa Ana Handicap winner Noble And Nice (Valdez).

These will help support activities meeting the TBA’s charitable objectives, including advancing the development of employees within the British breeding industry, shaping national and international policy affecting the industry and supporting breeders in their care of horses and employees.

TBA Chief Executive Claire Sheppard said: “Encouraging personal development and equine health and welfare are top priorities within the TBA’s strategy and these funds will help deliver vitally important projects over the next five years. The thoroughbred breeding industry is a fantastic sector in which to work, and we hope to support and develop those choosing this career pathway. This work will also complement our equine health and welfare projects to ensure the best standards of practice across the industry.

“The Racing Foundation’s funding gives us greater surety in income and enables us to progress now a number of vital projects for the benefit of breeders to help address the issues identified by last year’s Economic Impact Study. Further research into specific problem areas will help shape future TBA initiatives that will work to safeguard the long term future health of the British breeding industry and diversity of the breed.

“We are incredibly thankful for the Racing Foundation’s trustees and executive for their support for these industry projects.”

Devised by the TBA and National Stud, a new training and qualification pathway will be rolled out, incorporating the already successful Entry to Stud Employment course as part of Stage 1, supplemented by two further stages which include monitoring and assessment in the workplace.

Funds will also be used to support a digital learning platform to ensure that breeders and their teams are able to access online courses and educational materials at their own convenience.

Equine welfare will also be addressed through a new project with Weatherbys General Stud Book which will develop breeding industry data and increase research capability to improve traceability, insight and longer term planning. New data systems will help ensure the aspects of the thoroughbred’s lifecycle that are the responsibility of breeders are managed and align with principles of the industry equine welfare strategy and future potential changes in legislative requirements.

CHANGES ANNOUNCED TO 2020 FIXTURE LISTFollowing a meeting of its Board, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) yesterday announced changes to the Fixture List for 2020, including that 20 BHA-allocated fixtures were to be removed for 2020, leaving 1,491 fixtures being programmed for next year. The full fixture list for 2020 will be published next month.

Following the meeting to identify any improvements, a number of new measures will be put into place, including:

l No races to start later than 9pm at evening fixtures in the summer. (The finish time for floodlit fixtures was moved to 8:30pm for 2019).

l The Christmas break will be extended by one day. 22nd December becomes a non-racing day.

l The Jump racing break in August will extend from nine days to 12.

l Afternoon racing to be underway by 2pm at the latest to meet the needs of the betting public.

l Floodlit cards limited to seven programmed races so that races may divide to better adapt to demand within the horse population. Racecourses staging BHA fixtures to always opt in to dividing races at these meetings.

Richard Wayman, Chief Operating Officer for the BHA, said: “We are grateful for the efforts of all those involved in continuing to develop the Fixture List so that it best serves the longer-term interests of the sport and it is pleasing that a number of new initiatives have been agreed for next year.

“Discussions around fixture volume are often challenging, particularly so when prize money levels are under pressure. In reaching its decision, the Board sought to balance income considerations with the longer-term outlook for the sport, its customers and all those employed in racing.

“It is particularly significant that all parties are committed to supporting the detailed economic modelling that will take place in order that decisions can be made in future years based on more detailed and independent data. This is a very positive development that has the potential to support more significant changes to the structure of the Fixture List in the future. Our aim is to benefit all the parties directly involved and also help to ensure a growing and vibrant sport that meets the changing demands of its various customers.”

KZN Yearling Sale

TODAY National Two Year Old Sale

15th & 16th August 2019For news and information: www.bsa.co.za

DURBAN JULY CROWN UP FOR GRABSIt is all about one race in South Africa this weekend, the 122nd renewal of the Gr.1 Durban July at Greyville. First run in 1897 and considered the jewel of South African racing, the 2200m race never ceases to grab the imagination and boasts an Honour Roll featuring the revered names of titans such as Sea Cottage, Mazarin, Politician, Flaming Rock and London News, while those of a more recent vintage include the likes of Dynasty, Ipi Tombe, Pocket Power and Igugu.

Three-year-old Silvano colt Hawwaam is the current favourite and will bid to join Bold Silvano, Heavy Metal, Power King and Marinaresco as the fifth July winner for his champion sire, who made history in 2015 when the Maine Chance-bred trio of Power King, Punta Arenas and Tellina provided him with an epic July trifecta.

Trained by Mike de Kock for Sheikh Hamdan, Hawwaam enters the race off a Gr.1 hat-trick in the SA Classic, Premier’s Champions Challenge and Daily News 2000 and on that form, he could well be up to the task in what may be his final appearance in this country.

De Kock has a more than able back-up in Barahin (Gimmethegreenlight) who could be the joker in the pack. Fresh off a stunning win from way back in the Gr.3 Jubilee Handicap at Turffontein, the three-year-old, who is also owned by Sheikh Hamdan, returns to the track where he landed the Gr.2 Golden Horseshoe on July day a year ago. De Kock maintains we have not seen the best of this one yet and he rates a serious contender for top honours.

Defending champion Do It Again (Twice Over) showed he is on track with a fine win in the Gr.1 Gold Challenge after a four-month rest. Although history suggests this is no easy task – the last to score back-to-back July wins was El Picha in 2000 – Justin Snaith’s four-year-old could well live up to his name.

Former Lammerskraal owner Mike Rattray has never made a secret of his long-standing ambition to win the July, hence his purchase of Gr.1 Met winner Rainbow Bridge (Ideal World) from the estate of the late Chris Gerber. The octogenarian’s famous red and white silks have been carried to two seconds and a third in years gone by and as he admitted: “I have always wanted to have another crack at the race but I’m getting a bit old now. I am 86.”

Rainbow Bridge has had two prep runs in the Rattray silks, a narrow defeat in the Gr.2 Drill Hall Stakes and an unlucky third in the Gr.1 Gold Challenge. With a hungry Gavin Lerena aboard, the four-year-old will be looking to give his owner an overdue and much-deserved first July victory.

Reigning Horse of the Year Oh Susanna (Street Cry) sets a rare standard as she heads to post for the other Gr.1 contest on the

Maine Chance Farm’s Silvano has secured his third successive and a fourth in total sires title with around a month of racing to go.

day, the Garden Province Stakes for fillies and mares. The Drakenstein homebred made all to win the 1400m Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes at the track last time out, a crack run over a distance far short of her best. On class alone, the sparingly-raced four-year-old towers over the opposition and looks set to remain unbeaten at this venue.

GR.3 WINTER DERBYRacing beyond 2000m for the first time, Dharma clearly benefited from a step up in distance to win the Gr.3 Winter Derby at Kenilworth in the manner of a true staying type.

Nexus (Dynasty) took it up at the top of the straight, but he had no answer to the flying Dharma, who wore him down for a half-length first Stakes success.

It was somewhat of a family affair, as the gelding is a homebred for Terry and Annabel Andrews of Sorrento Stud and was ridden to victory by son Anthony.

He was sired by former Sorrento resident Royal Air Force, a Gr.2-winning son of the mighty Jet Master, who also featured as the broodmare sire of runner-up Nexus. Coincidentally, Geoff Woodruff trained both Royal Air Force and Jet Master, while Dharma is trained by daughter Lucinda at his Milnerton satellite yard.

Sold for R130,000 at the Val De Vie Yearling Sale, the winner is a half-brother to Listed Olympic Duel second Samsara (Rock Of Rochelle) and is out of Karma (Dr Fong), an unraced daughter of imported Kundalini (El Gran Senor). South Africa’s Champion Three-Year-Old Filly in 1993 and winner of both the Gr.1 Bloodline Classic and Gr.2 Dingaans, she was sold to the UK for broodmare duties and, while she never replicated herself as a broodmare, her daughters have kept the family fortunes ticking over. Vivianna (Indian Ridge) produced Diamond Diva (Dansili), winner of the Gr.2 Cashcall Mile International Stakes and twice placed in the Gr.1 Gamely Stakes, while Rainbow Quest daughter Vijanti bred Gr.3 East Cape Derby hero Vengence (Black Sam Bellamy). Kundalini is a full-sister to Gr.3 Prix Minerve victress Lime Gardens and a half-sister to the American Stakes winner Pixie Spirit (Sadler’s Wells). The next dam Hatton Gardens (Auction Ring) landed the Listed Carna Fillies Stakes and is a half-sister to the champion racemare and Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Kooyonga (Persian Bold).

GR.3 LANGERMANImpressive debut winner Silver Operator’s bid to give trainer Vaughan Marshall a third successive victory in the Gr.3 Langerman over 1500m at Kenilworth was thwarted by the lesser fancied Candice Bass-Robinson runner Snow Report.

The pair turned for home alongside one another, with the latter taking the shortest route home and under a hard ride, he just held off the inexperienced favourite by a head.

The winner is one of seven Stakes winners sired by Drakenstein-based What A Winter, who was trained by Candice’s father Mike Bass to score four Gr.1 victories and was named the country’s champion sprinter of 2012.

His juvenile son, a R400,000 yearling purchase, was bred by the Limestone Thoroughbred Trust and is the fifth winner from as many runners out of Snug As A Bug (Qui Danzig). Grandam Wet Winter is a half-sister to the dual Stakes winner Lemon And Lime (Dancing Champ) and the multiple Stakes-placed Madam Butterfly (Al Mufti). Snow Report is inbred 2x3 to former Lammerskraal champion stallion Western Winter, the sire of both What A Winter and Wet Winter.

SILVANO ASSURED OF FOURTH SIRES’ TITLEWith barely four weeks to go before the end of the current racing season, Maine Chance Farm’s three-time South African champion sire Silvano has wrapped up his third straight Sires’ title and fourth overall. The country’s dominant stallion for the past three seasons, he took the title for the first time in 2013.

According to latest statistics, the son of Lomitas enjoys an unassailable lead of almost R5-million over second-placed Captain Al. Meanwhile, the latter is currently engaged in an enthralling battle for the juvenile sires’ title with Gimmethegreenlight.

SALES NEWSThe most expensive commodity at yesterday’s first session of the KZN Yearling Sale proved to be a son of Gimmethegreenlight, which was snapped up for R550,000 by Nic Jonsson, the owner of last year’s Durban July winner Do It Again.

Consigned by Nadeson Park Stud, the September-foaled bay is the second foal of Fort Wood mare Bluebell Glade, a winning daughter of champion Bold Ellinore (Kahal) and a half-sister to Gardenia Handicap victress Ha Lucy (Trippi).

Lammerskraal Stud’s Visionaire dominated last weekend’s KZN Breeders Day meeting with four individual winners and he was responsible for the next best lots. Klipdrif Stud’s colt out of Listed Summer Juveniles Stakes victress Agra (Trippi) was knocked down to Lynton Ryan for R460,000, whilst local trainer Dennis Drier snared the Lammerskraal offering Nostradamus for R420,000. A chesnut like his imposing sire, the colt is the first foal of Gr.3-placed Jet Master mare Berlinetta.

The sale concludes today.

GERMAN THOROUGHBRED NEWS

PRESENTED BY

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

DERBY TIME HITS HAMBURGIt is Derby time. This Sunday the most prestigious race in Germany will be run for the 150th time in Hamburg. There are 16 runners with Surrey Thunder (Le Havre) being the only starter from overseas. Cloth number one will be carried by the Ittlingen homebred Laccario (Scalo), an emphatic winner of the most important Derby prep race, the Gr.2 Union-Rennen at Cologne three weeks ago. His rider, Eddie Pedroza from Panama, is looking for his first Derby win, having being placed several times in more than a dozen tries. For his trainer, Andreas Wohler, it would be Deutsches Derby success number five.

On Tuesday, the Laccario team picked starting gate four – a good position for a horse which is as “easy to steer as a car,” Pedroza said after winning the Union. His main rival, Django Freeman (Campanologist), bred by Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof and owned by Hedge Baumgarten Holschbach, stands right next to him in gate three. The Henk Grewe-trained colt was runner-up to Laccario in the Union and took the Gr.3 Bavarian Classic in May.

QUEST THE MOON WITH STARKE ON BOARDAt Munich Django Freeman got the better of Quest The Moon (Sea The Moon), who was bred by Gestut Gorlsdorf and is owned by Stall Salzburg and trained by Sarah Steinberg. However, the winner of the Gr.3 Zukunftsrennen at Baden-Baden last year then went on to win the Gr.3 Pris du Lys at Longchamp in style. “He is very well and we are quite confident,” his young trainer said. “Obviously a lot of things can happen in this race.”

Quest The Moon was unlucky in getting gate 15, but he has one big plus with Andrasch Starke on board. His employer, Peter Schiergen of Stall Asterblute has no runner this year so team Salzburg booked the most experienced rider they could imagine. Starke has already won the Derby seven times, most recently on Nutan (Duke Of Marmalade) in 2015.

FRENCH KING RULES AGAINChampion Trainer Markus Klug has had a tight grip on the Derby in recent years, winning the 2400m test three times since 2014, and last year achieved a one-two with the Soldier Hollow duo Weltstar and Destino. This time he fancies Accon (Camelot), bred by Gestut Hof Ittlingen and owned by Holger Renz, who took the Gr.3 Derby Trial at Baden-Baden in June. However, the runner-up in that race, Skyful Sea (Sea The Stars), had absolutely no chance in the Gr.2 Grosser Hansa-Preis last Sunday despite getting plenty of weight from the older horses.

The Gestut Bona filly, trained by Peter Schiergen, finished well beaten in fifth place in the field of six. Just like in the Gr.2 Carl Jaspers Preis in early May, French King (French Fifteen), proved too strong for the home runners. With Olivier Peslier on board, the four-year-old colt easily scored from Royal Youmzain (Youmzain) and Colomano (Cacique). “Royal Youmzain has improved since being runner-up in the Gr.2 Preis der Badische Wirtschaft on his seasonal debut,” Andreas Wohler said. “But the winner must really have improved a lot.”

French King was bred by Umm Qarn Farms and is a son of the Longchamp Listed victrix Marina Piccola (Halling), whose dam is the German Gr.3 victrix Marine Bleue (Desert Prince).

A SOLDIER HOLLOW FESTIVALWohler had plenty to cheer for on Monday when the gamble to run the Team Valor-owned Axana in the Gr.3 Hamburger Stutenmeile for fillies and mares paid off. The race turned into a benefit for leading sire Soldier Hollow, with Gestut Auenquelle’s stallion being responsible for the first three home: Axana, Shalona and Madita. Last time out Axana, already a Gr.3 winner, was a neck second in the Gr.2 German 1,000 Guineas. She holds an entry in August’s Gr.1 Preis der Diana. Bred by Sergej Penner, Axana is inbred 3x4 to Sadler’s Wells, and is the fourth foal of Achinora, who foaled a full-brother to her in April.

On Wednesday the Gestut Brummerhof homebred Waldpfad (Sharmadal) scored in the Gr.3 1200m Sparkasse Holstein Cup. Trained by Dominik Moser, the five-year-old out of Waldbeere (Mark Of Esteem) who is part of the famous W-Line of Ravensberg, her best product being so far the multiple Group winner Wiesenpfad (Waky Nao). PETER MUHLFEIT

Winner of the Gr.1d H H The Emir Trophy at Doha in February, French King (French Fifteen) has now won back-to-back German Gr.2s. He followed up May’s Carl Jaspers-Preis win with a two and a quarter-length score in the Grosser Hansa Preis at Hamburg last weekend. © Ruehl

Sandown 7th July 2007

NOTNOWCATO (Ryan Moore) wins the Coral Eclipse Stakes The first half of the 2007 Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes was confusing enough. The owners of the Gr.1 Derby winner and odds-on favourite Authorized ran a pacemaker, Champery, who set off way too fast down the back straight and was soon many lengths clear. Connections of the second favourite, the mercurial, and all-round comedian, George Washington, ran three no-hopers; Yellowstone, Archipenko and Admiralofthefleet. Initially, the riders of two of these went in pursuit of Champery, then changed their minds and reined back into the path of the main pack where, for a while, everyone got in everyone else’s way. Everyone that is, apart from Ryan Moore and Notnowcato, who was third favourite at 7/1.

Confusion turned to bedlam as the field straightened for home. Moore, angling Notnowcato away from the pack, simultaneously put his mount into top gear and sent him to the outside hedge on the grandstand side, whilst his rivals stayed as a group on the customary far rail.

Attention turned to Authorized and George Washington, who were being manoeuvred into challenging positions to fight out the finish by Frankie Dettori and Seamie Heffernan, but it was clear that Notnowcato was not done with on the stands’ side, and might even be in front.

It was a guessing game for everyone. Eyes flickered from horses to big screen and back, looking for a clue until, as they crossed the line, Ryan Moore looked over his right shoulder at his rivals that could scarcely believe what had just gone down. Notnowcato had won the Eclipse by one and a half lengths. Authorized was second and George Washington finished third.

It is not unusual for the whole field to make the move to the stands’ side when the ground is soft at Sandown, but on this occasion it had not been considered soft enough for that, except by Moore, who had detected enough of a difference when walking the track before racing.

Of course, Notnowcato may have won where ever he had raced. He had won the Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup (beating Dylan Thomas) that spring, and the previous year’s Gr.1 Juddmonte International, but he will forever be remembered for the day when Ryan Moore performed Grand Theft Cato on the Coral Eclipse.
