1 Dear Parents and Friends of our School Our students have been extremely involved again this fortnight in the many different aspects of high school life eg Under 8s Day, Regional Cross Country, Somerset Cup Gala Day, State of Origin lunch time activity and the Indigenous Cultural Awareness Camp. Students in all year levels are also very busy with assessment – tests, assignments, projects, presenta- tions and practical activities. Support from home is really important at these times - helping your student to manage their time, eat well, exercise and maintain a balance of activities is vital. For our students who work, this could mean reducing the number of part-time hours for the next couple of weeks. Open Day and Careers Expo Organisation for the Open Day and Careers Expo on Tuesday 15 August (4pm-7pm) is well underway and looking to be our best ever. This year we will again be including a num- ber of fun, educational and interactive curriculum activities to showcase the amazing learn- ing that is occurring at our School. Please see the advertising flyer in this Newsletter on page 2. Work Experience for all Year 10 Students Our Year 10 students will be off campus during the last week of this term to experience the ‘world of work’. We wish them all the very best as they represent our great school and expe- rience work in their chosen field. We also wish to acknowledge all the employers who have made their businesses and themselves available to support the next generation along their journey. Toogoolawah Show This weekend we will be experiencing ‘Show’ excitement at the Toogoolawah Show. I en- courage you to visit our School’s display and cheer on our Equestrian and Agricultural stu- dents. The P and C Hamburger Stall will again be operating near the cattle area so don’t forget to support our School by buying a hamburger and drink. Deputy Principal’s Report Semester 1 Reports 2017 With students completing assessment right into the last week of Semester 1, Semester 1 Reports will be issued after the holi-days. Students will be issued their Report for this Semester during Period 4 on Monday 17 July. Parent-Teacher Night The Parent/Teacher Night will be held on Tuesday 1 August. Parent/Teacher Night online bookings will open on Monday 17 July. End of Semester Assessment – Our assessment programs are designed with a number of key principles in mind: A range of assessment types are used and reflect, where possible, a range of learning experiences. Assessment is graded based on pre-determined standards. It is the quality of the student work that determines the student’s result. Assessment matches the plan in the approved work program. Clear information and sufficient scaffolding are provided to ensure optimal student results while maintaining the integrity of

the assessment item. Year 10 and 11 OP and QCE Information Session - Tuesday 15 August 4.30pm to 5.00pm To get the best outcomes for our Year 10 and 11 students, it is important that information contained in the Semester One Report is understood by both students and parents. I believe it is vital for parents to understand the Semester One Report and make sure that their son/daughter is on track for a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The Queensland Certificate of Educa-tion is awarded at the end of Year 12 to all students who successfully complete Year 11 and Year 12 and is the benchmark high school graduation certificate for Queensland. Students need to have an understanding of how the Semester One Report lays the foundation for a successful transition to fulltime work, an apprentice/traineeship or university course. To develop this understanding, the School is dedicated to providing our senior students with accurate and timely information about their performance and career pathways so they are motivated to achieve. The School will provide our Year 10 and 11 students with this information at a Year 10 and 11 OP and QCE Infor-mation Session - Tuesday 15 August 4.30pm to 5.00pm in D3. This year the information session will be combined with the Open Day and Careers Expo so that students and parents will be able to access traineeship and apprenticeship agencies attending the Open Day and Careers Expo. The extensive range of traineeship and apprenticeship agencies on-hand will provide detailed information and advice about how to get a traineeship or apprenticeship. OP eligible students will receive detailed information and advice about how to get the best OP score. Parents will receive a report that will help them work with their son/daughter to set performance goals. Students will be able to use the information gained to begin setting OP goals and researching universities and university courses. The extensive range of universities repre-sented at the Open Day and Careers Expo will provide detailed information and advice about university entry, pre-requisites and scholarship opportunities.

2017 Semester One Assessment Block To strengthen the assessment culture in the Senior School, Year 11 and 12 students will be assessed during an assessment block in the last week of Semester One. Special supervision arrangements will exist during assessment blocks to maximise study opportunities for students. The Assessment Block Timetable and guidelines have been published to students.

Vivo Rewards Positive Behaviour Rewards Program: VIVO The School has recently implemented the Vivo Rewards Program, which aims to engage and motivate students to perform to the best of their ability. Vivo is a web-based system that rewards students for positive behaviour both inside and outside the classroom. It encourages students to save their reward points and then redeem them in an on-line shop or donate them to char-ity.

Deputy Principal’s Report (continued) Vivo also works for the whole school. It will help us to improve our attend-ance rates, academic performance and enrich behaviour and well-being throughout our School and to the benefit of every student. It is directly linked to the Whole School Priority Classroom Learning: I will engage in classroom activities. Teachers continue to stamp student diaries in recog-nition of positive behaviour and engagement in the classroom. VIVO points are awarded for each stamp students receive and also by teachers for various other reasons, including 100% class attendance. Download the VIVO app with your student or view their account at www.vivoedge.com.au to view the wide variety of products available for purchase in the shop. There is a large number of school specific purchas-es available too. Tuckshop vouchers, ‘Bell Tone Friday’ and ‘Lunch with the Principal’ are just a few. Our whole school focus on classroom engagement can be viewed under I block where the Year Coordinators are dis-playing a league table of VIVO points. Along with their focus on attendance rates, they update and publish this data regularly. Ross Jardine

Senior Schooling News A number of important reminders regarding the senior school. Year 11 senior Jerseys For a student to be eligible to order a Senior Jersey the following criteria must meet by the end of Term 4:

Be on Behaviour Level 3 or above Have no outstanding school invoices Have an attendance rate of 85% or higher for Semester 2

Students with attendance levels below 85% without considerable documentary evidence (e.g. Medical Certificate) will not receive a Senior Jersey. If at any time during Year 11 a student is below 85% the Year Co-ordinator will meet with the student to discuss the possibility of not receiving a senior. In the event of a student not meeting the attendance requirement by the end of Term 4, the student will not be eligible to order a Senior Jersey. If you have any questions in regard to this process, or would like to check your child’s progress at any time throughout the year, please do not hesitate to contact me on 5423 4444 or [email protected]. Year 12 Formal Even though the Formal is in Term 4, to some this may seem an eternity away, however student shave to remain focused to attend School to achieve an invitation to the Formal. For students to receive an invitation to the Formal, attendance must be above 85% and all students must be on level 3 or above. Year 11 Camp Year 11 Camp is fast approaching and with that comes the final details leading up to Camp. Before the holidays, students will re-ceive their packing list. There are a number of compulsory items that students will need to bring. I encourage students to look over this and not to ‘bin it’. Final payment must occur before the holidays. If you cannot make final payment before the holidays, please contact Mr Moloney. General Wellbeing End of Term can be quite stressful for some students. I encourage all students to communicate with staff leading up to exam block. The more we know, the more we can help. Also parents, any questions regarding Formal, Camp, Senior Jersey or just general wellbeing please contact Mr Moloney. I am always here for a chat. Cheers Bill Moloney Senior School Co-ordinator

Sport News A glorious winter’s day saw the annual Somerset Cup being held at Toogoolawah SHS last Friday. Hosted by Somerset Regional Council, the Cup is held between Kilcoy, Lowood and Toogoolawah State High School’s in Soccer, Netball and Touch Football. There was high participation amongst students and although we didn’t come away with the win, the day demonstrated and con-firmed to the Council how respectful and active our young people are. The day finished with a Teacher vs Local Police game of Touch appropriately ending in a Draw. We thank Mayor Graeme Lehmann and the Councillors for attending the day and for once again being committed to the young people in our community. Well done to the seven students who attended the Regional Cross Country at Limestone Park on Thursday. The students were: Alisha Van Schie Talena Harvey Tara Chaplin Emily Bickers Amber Williams Harrison Engel Damien Maddy

Unfortunately the competition was strong and we missed out on selection, but top effort on such a hard course. This now concludes the Cross Country season for our School. It feels like we finish one event and begin the next with Athletics just around the corner. Nominations have been held with events starting next week (week 9). All 1500m events will occur during the first lunch break throughout the week. Students can check K Block staffroom window for exact event times. The Carnival will be held on the first Friday of Term 3. Start getting your costumes ready! Angela Lynch Sport Teacher

Toogoolawah Rugby League On Thursday, our Junior and Senior Rugby League teams participated in a Rugby League Carnival in Ipswich. We had 31 players attend this competition which is a fantastic effort. Each competition that Toogoolawah enters, we are seeing more players commit to the games. The boys played schools from Sandgate, Ferny Grove, Springfield and the Gap. One thing that makes me proud is that we play schools in which rugby league is an excellence program and the schools participate in a weekly completion. Our boys show up once a term and give their all and they are not fearful playing larger players. Not once do they let their mates down and they are to be con-gratulated with the effort they put in. Congratulations to our Junior team who won 2 out of their 4 games. Despite our open boys not winning a game, they were competitive until the final whistle. Bill Moloney Rugby League Coach

Behaviour Management

Developing Student Leadership On 24 May, all Yr 11 and 12 students were given the opportunity to engage in Student Leadership Development through a program run by Unleashing Personal Potential (UPP). UPP believe in ‘Every student becoming their best’. They provide in-school training experiences and online lesson plans dedicated exclusively to building growth mindsets, building grit, building wellbeing and building leaders. The highly engaging, fun and interactive day was well received by all students. This program will be followed up with lesson mod-ules in PDP on Wednesdays and a second day on 9 August. Yr 11 students will have the added opportunity to develop their personal leadership through the Yr 11 Camp on 19 - 21 July. Another opportunity to learn that “we rise by lifting others”. Stephen Beacham HOD of Student Services

Week 9 I am RESPONSIBLE when I Line up in two lines for class Lining up in two lines allows a settling time for students and an orderly beginning to a lesson. The expectation is that students line up in two lines before class, with their equipment, waiting to be greet-

ed and instructed to enter the room by their teacher. Responsible people do the things that are right and expected of them.

Week 10 I am RESPONSIBLE for my actions when I Follow School Policies Policies are found in the Responsible Behaviour Plan and student’s School Diary (page 14-15) Know where to find a list of the rules and policies. Follow them without being reminded of them by teachers. Policies and rules are important at school and in society in general to keep communities working together

with a sense of belonging. Policies are endorsed by the P and C.

Ag News Ribbons were a-plenty when the Cattle Show Team participated at the Esk Show recently. Students and cattle did not disap-point and Toogoolawah State High School are fast becoming a fierce contender in the show ring. The Friday evening program commenced with the Prime Cattle Judging. This event requires students to select cattle in an order best suited to the local cattle market. They are then invited to speak about the order in which they selected their ani-mals. As you can see, this requires students to demonstrate confidence and competence, so we were very excited when well deserved winners John Delaforce and Taylor Williams took out first and second respectively. A big congratulations to all stu-dents involved for having the courage to have a go in such a public arena. As the Friday night drew colder, events started to heat up. Stud judging was next in line which requires a similar skillset from the previous event, however this time focused on Stud Cattle particularly looking at their breed characteristics. Olivia Delaforce took out the win with her performance in the ring describing the Stud Cattle eloquently and accurately. An early start Saturday morning saw students preparing their cattle for show, ensuring they were in tip top shape. Our Mt Bris-bane Droughtmasters were first on show taking out Champion Heifer (Mt Brisbane Heidi) and Champion Bull (Mt Brisbane Hawkeye). Mt Brisbane Heidi also took out the Champion Tropical Breed Heifer. In addition the three new Droughtmasters, Mt Brisbane Ida, Ikea and Ian, with only three weeks preparation won or placed in their class. This demonstrates the hard work of students working tirelessly during lunchtimes to ensure the cattle were ready to go come Show Day. We thank the McConnell Family and Mt Brisbane Droughtmasters for their continued support of this successful partnership. A number of students took to the ring in the Led Steer and Heifer Competition. There was a large number of competitors in each of the classes with a mixture of final results. The final event of the Esk Show was the Paraders Competition. This requires students to lead and present their animal to a judge. Olivia Delaforce came 3rd in the 13-15 yrs age group and John Delaforce was 4th in the 15-25 yrs age group. With the cattle events out of the way, it was time to move to the sheds to see the success of our vegetable and farm produce entries. What makes me particularly excited about this, is the enthusiasm students have for growing their own produce and being competitive with farmers across the district. A total of 10 entries were made with results as follows: First Place Collection of Vegetables Tomatoes Shallots Second Place Lemons Beetroots Pumpkins Eggs

As you can tell, the Esk Show was a very successful event for us and we look forward to competing at the Toogoolawah Show this Friday and Saturday. If you can come along and show your support, the students would be thrilled to see many of the community showing an interest in the work they do. Angela Lynch Ag Teacher

Practise Doesn’t Make Perfect – Especially When Listening I wish to start off my article today with an apology. I am aware that I have missed writing on the topic of ‘listening blocks’ in the last few issues of our School Newsletter and for this I say sorry.

Well today I am back on track and I am looking at the listening block of ‘Rehearsing’. What is rehears-ing? Well it is when you are already practising in your head how you are going to respond to a person who is talking to you.

Let’s for example imagine this - what if I was to say that same apology about me missing the last few issues of the Newsletter to you in person. What would go through your mind as I was saying sorry? Well chances are you would be thinking about how to respond. You could think of responses like: That’s ok it happens Well you need to organise your time better You said sorry last week, but I see no change

Rehearsing is when we begin to practise our responsive statements in our head.

What is wrong with this? Aren’t we taught to think before we speak? I mean doesn’t thinking and practising our responsiveness to people before we say something, stop us from what everyone calls ‘foot in mouth disease’?

Well the big trouble with rehearsing your responses to someone who is talking to you is, you are not listening to them, you are too busy thinking of the next creative response you are going to give to them. When you are rehearsing your comeback state-ments in your mind to someone talking to you, your attention is not on listening to that person, your attention is on the "I'll say, then he'll say, then I'll say," scenario.

For sure you have to look interested or make it look like you are tuned in and listening to what is being said, but that’s not the case at all. When you are mentally rehearsing what to say next, your mind is going a mile a minute, because all you are con-cerned about is your next flawless response. There is very little hope of you listening to a person properly who is talking to you, when you are practising your responses in your mind. That’s why I say Practise Doesn’t Make Perfect – Especially When Lis-tening.

Garth Nilsen Youth Support Co-ordinator

Men’s Health Week June 12-18 When did you have your last tune-up?

Blokes can generally be quite fastidious about their machinery. It doesn't matter if you are farmers, timber work-ers, truckers, miners or car owners when a service is due on the machinery you either do it yourselves or get the mechanic to do it. This is especially so when the value of the machinery is significant – sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars! With the correct maintenance schedule we can keep our machinery running optimally and can often avoid costly repairs - problems can be identified and fixed early before they become major.

Our most valuable piece of machinery however is our own health. When it comes to blokes looking after themselves, mostly they don't have a ‘maintenance schedule’ and tend to use the ‘wait and see’ approach. Physically, if we have an ache or pain, the attitude is often that of ‘I'll battle through this’ or ‘I'll wait a while and see if this gets better by itself’. For most of us we get away with this most of the time.

This year’s theme for Men’s Health Week is ‘HEALTHY BODY – HEALTHY MIND: KEEPING THE BALANCE’. It explores the different ways men and boys are managing to keep healthy, physically and emotionally, in a busy and sometimes challenging world. Balancing these challenges means doing things that are nourishing and good.

Health is complex – we can tend to become overwhelmed with information about our health. ‘Spanner in the Works’ from Men’s Shed is an attempt to provide some key health messages to men in a form that is understandable and achievable. ‘Spanner in the Works’? is not about telling men what to do but sets out some things that men can do (or not do) to improve their health and their chances of a longer and happier life. It gives men the opportunity to make adjustments as they see fit. Often minor adjustments can have a major impact on health, relationships with loved ones and friends and work.

Now back to that tune up - Why not log onto ‘Spanner in the Works’ …….. Get a Diagnostic and you can go from there.

Happy Healthing!! The website is http://mensshed.org/spanner-in-the-works

Bazinga Level 2 Rewards Trip The sun shone brightly over the delighted Toogoolawah students as they gathered under the bright green foliage. The bus was parked on the side of the road, with the driver patiently waiting as Mr Phillip’s voice rang out over the grounds. Then, the trip began. First at Bazinga, the Junior Level 2 students chatted near the bowling lanes. In minutes we were split into four groups of sev-en, prepared for the bowling championship of a lifetime. Lane 10 was in tight competition with Riley and I battling it out for first place. Riley came out first in our lane with a score of 107. After a quick lunch of wedges, gems and chips, and a productive session in the arcade, we prepared for laser tag. A computer tutorial gave us the lowdown of the game, then we suited up in a vest and phaser. Our team was orange first and we dashed around, fighting for survival. Next we were a pale blue and again we zapped left, right and centre, coming up a close 3rd. Jessica McKenna Student

Bowling Shenanigans Fifty-six level two students travelled off to the far land of Toowoomba for some much needed fun. At nine o clock in the morn-ing the bus and one car left for Toowoomba. In an hours’ time we arrived at Bazinga! The air was filled with excitement as we entered the building. Flashing lights emanated from rows of games and prizes that hung high from the shelves. As we were split into two teams, I headed to the bowling section first. After ten games, Helen emerged victorious. After having our share of eating and playing in the arcade our teams switched. Years 7 and 8 went to laser tag and Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 went to bowling. Suited up with vests and our pistols, our team were given strange names like Gothyk, Paragon and Olympia. After about thirty minutes of shooting, all of us came out sweaty but victorious. Ready to go home we all collected our prizes and left. Kate Coleman Student

A message from Nurse Melany The season of illness appears to have come early and is upon us. It is already that time of year when many adults and chil-dren are unwell. Currently in our community we have a range of highly contagious illnesses going around such as colds, flu and gastro. There are a few simple and effective ways of reducing the chances of catching or spreading these illnesses. Flu vaccination is highly effective and available for children and adults at many chemists, GPs and some workplaces. There may be some minor side effects, but these outweigh the time off work or school required, if you are unfortunate enough to catch influenza. Other than vaccination, hand washing is the number one way to prevent illness from spreading. Try to remember to encour-age your children to wash their hands when they come home from school and other places such as shopping centres. Use tissues to sneeze or blow your nose into and throw straight in the bin. Do not come to work, school or go out to places such as shopping centres or movies if you are unwell to re-duce the chance of spreading the illness. If you or your child experience any symptoms that concern you, please see your Doctor or call 13health (13432584) for the cost of a local call 24hrs a day to receive qualified health advice from a nurse. Prevention is the best defence we have to stay well.

Toogoolawah Rugby League Representative Congratulations to Mitch Farlow who has earned selection in the Central Crows Rugby League team. Mitch was selected by playing for the South West Mustangs against the top rugby league players across central Queensland and the Sunshine Coast. Mitch’s selection pathway to make the Central Crows team has not come easy. First he was selected for the Toowoomba Clydesdales. After a successful trial against players from rural Queensland, he was then selected for the South West Mustangs. Now his representation in the Crows team resembles him being one of the top players in the central Queensland area. Mitch will play in the State carnival in July, where his next step will be the Queensland Jersey. All the best Mitch.

Brisbane Valley Bulls We would like to announce we are open for business. We are an ALL NEW COM-MITTEE and would like to invite anyone who may be interested in joining our Club as a volunteer or a player (Under 6 and above, boy or girl) to come on down and give us a go because we would love to see you here. If you are 13 years and above and would like to volunteer as a Junior Referee, 15 years and above and would like to volunteer as a League Safe (course can be done online) or Coach, or 18 years and above and would like to volunteer as a League first aide officer, we will be having accredited courses available for the above soon, dates are to be confirmed. You can either check out our Facebook page ‘Brisbane Valley Bulls Queensland Football Club’ or call the President, Steve Barraclough (0428 653 185). We will also be looking for team managers, help in the canteen on home games both Friday nights and Saturdays, assistant coaches, people to be there on home games early to set up and stay back after; to pack up and clean up, scoring, announcing and more, these are all volunteer positions and are very much appreciated and as a small country club your time will not go unnoticed. If you can't do a whole day, that's ok too; any time you can give the club will be appreciated. We are hoping to get kids on the field before the holidays, so we need to get these above positions accredited and ready to roll. We are also very much hoping to get some home games this season, but this will depend on the draws for the season. We would also like to acknowledge Lowood Stags Junior Rugby Club for helping us financially by letting us man their home game gates and raffles and donating those funds back to our little Club. If you know a business that may be interested in spon-soring a team or our Club please feel free to give our President a call (details above).
