FROM THE PRINCIPAL

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PRIORITY— READING Our students have made a flying start to the new year. It’s fantas c to see how our students have se led into their class and 

school rou nes, they have really hit the ground running and we can expect to see some great achievements as they strive for 

excellence. 

In 2017 along with the con nued implementa on of the Australian Curriculum across all year levels, we will con nue our 

targeted learning focus on reading.  We will be implemen ng a whole school approach to the teaching of reading.  This is 

being achieved through consistent teaching and learning prac ces across the whole school, by: 

 

In the early years: 

‐ Ongoing a en on to oral language development.  

‐ Use of high quality literature.  

‐ Use of a range of texts including wri en, spoken, visual or mul modal in print and digital/online forms – in all learning 

areas/subjects.  

‐ Authen c literacy experiences that are both task oriented and for enjoyment.  

‐ Frequent ongoing monitoring of student progress in reading and oral language to ensure appropriate and  mely 

interven ons.  

‐ Use of ongoing monitoring and a variety of quality assessment techniques to inform instruc on.  

‐ Use of student data to determine the next steps for reading instruc on, differen a on, and to ensure appropriate and 

mely interven ons.  

‐ Evidence of links made to wri ng.  

Balance of instruc on: modelled, shared, guided and independent reading.  

 

Middle Years: 

‐ Systema c, explicit and targeted instruc on – in the context of meaningful, challenging language work – in concepts of 

print, phonological awareness, phonic knowledge, word and text knowledge, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.  

‐ Ongoing monitoring and formalised diagnos c assessment (for example, Early Start, PM Benchmark) of micro skills that 

underpin reading (that is, concepts of print, phonological awareness, word and text knowledge, phonic knowledge, and 

comprehension).  

Ongoing targeted instruc on in phonic knowledge, word and text knowledge, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension 

for students whose data indicates the need.  

 

Upper Years: 

‐  Increasing emphasis on independent reading, while maintaining modelled, shared, and guided reading for new and more 

complex text types and/or new subject ma er.  

‐ Gradual shi  from learning to read to reading to learn, with increasing focus on reading in learning areas other than English, 

including explicit a en on to vocabulary and texts, and connec ng ideas within and across texts. 

 ‐ Increasing emphasis on independent reading, while maintaining shared, modelled and guided reading for new and more 

complex text types and/or new subject ma er.  

‐ Emphasis on reading to learn, with increasing focus on reading in learning areas other than English, including explicit 

a en on to vocabulary, sentence structure and texts, and connec ng ideas within and across texts . 

 

Positive Behaviour for Learning  

This year we will be reviewing our Responsible Behaviour Plan. As part of the process we will be adop ng the Posi ve Behaviour for Learning system( PBL). 

What is PBL? Posi ve Behaviour for Learning is an evidence‐based whole school approach to establishing the social culture needed for schools to be effec ve learning environments for all students. 

PBL is not a program. It is an organisa onal framework for iden fying, adop ng and applying evidence‐based prac ces for building and suppor ng academic and social success for all students. PBL ensures that all students have the social and emo onal skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. PBL assists schools to teach students expected social behaviours and, when implemented with integrity, it is an effec ve strategy for preven ng school‐based behaviour problems including violence and bullying.  

 

Teaching and suppor ng social behavioural skills creates student behavioural health and contributes to improving the effec veness of academic support systems. 

 

PBL applies data‐based decision making to improve student discipline, academic and social and emo onal learning outcomes.

Music News Year 1‐3 are sounding wonderful when we sing our songs for Term 1 which are "Edelweiss" and "Zipadeedodah".  Congratula ons also to our new Instrumental Music students for star ng off  so fast on their new instruments.

Tytan Harlow This is my second year teaching 

Tytan and he has made 

tremendous progress as a student. 

Tytan has learned to put maximum 

effort into work tasks. He is a 

student who generates good 

results through hard work. In 

Tytan’s first three Year 1 spelling 

tests he has achieved scores of 10 

out of 10, 9 out of 10, and 10 out of 10, which is a fantas c 

effort. 

 

Tytan follows school rules and values. He completes all 

school and homework tasks. He is a caring class member 

who likes to cheer up his classmates and make sure 

everyone is feeling welcome and valued. Tytan is always 

dressed neatly in his school uniform and turns up to class 

ready to learn. Tytan treats his peers and teachers with 

respect. He brings a happy a tude to school each day. 

 

Tytan is making significant improvement with his 

handwri ng. His work is ge ng neater every day. Tytan is a 

valued and contribu ng member of the Year 1 class 

community and Toogoolawah State School.
