Principal Black’s Message October is Bullying Awareness Month. At C.L. Smith, we are continuing to instruct our students on treating each other with respect, embracing our diversity and differences and how to communicate in an appropriate manner. Bullying is a term used by students and parents to define a number of situations students work through at schools. Bullying.gov defines bullying as unwanted, repeated behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. An important part of this definition is the term "repeated”. One- time statements do not align with the definition of bullying. Examples of Bullying are: Physical (Repeated) o Hitting o Pushing o Kicking Verbal (Repeated) o Teasing o Name-calling o Threatening Social (Repeated) o Excluding others o Telling others not to befriend individuals o Cyber online Many times students use the term bullying when another student makes one unwarranted or mean comment toward them. One comment or action is not bullying. It is important for our students to understand that if these behaviors repeat continuously, that is defined as bullying. We strive to decrease this type of behavior through a variety of strategies. Students respond in one of three ways when a mean comment or action is directed at them: Aggressively (saying mean things back to a student, or becoming physical by pushing, hitting, or kicking), Passively (internalizing the statement and keeping the emotions inside themselves), Assertively (confidence, standing your ground and using the "I feel" message). All students desire respect and when they feel they don't receive it, a power imbalance takes place, leading some to put others down to gain this perceived power. To level this imbalance we will continue to educate on inclusion and appropriate communication between our students. As part of our education at CL Smith, we stress the importance of respect. In our primary grades (K-3) we use “Steps to Respect” to educate our students on ways they can treat others. Our upper grades use lessons within our Social Skills curriculum, hold class discussions and meetings, and continue to share ways to communicate in appropriate manners. Over the past month, we have been working with our students on appropriate communication with each other. We are educating all of our students about the effects our comments and actions have on each other. Here are some key points we have been discussing with our students: How careless or mean comments and actions can hurt another student. How a student responds when they are the focus of a mean or careless comment and/or action. How to respond assertively when others make comments that may hurt them. As parents, we ask that you continue this message for us at home by working with students on how to respond appropriately, rather than aggressively or passively and help them understand the definition of bullying. In building our school culture of acceptance, we have challenged our student council to take on student inclusion as their major focus area for this school year. We will ask them to create ways for students to get involved on campus, accept one another, and build lasting relationships. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to stop by or call.

One-time statements do not align with the definition of bullying.

Examples of Bullying are:

Physical (Repeated) o Hitting o Pushing o Kicking

Verbal (Repeated) o Teasing o Name-calling o Threatening

Social (Repeated) o Excluding others o Telling others not to

befriend individuals o Cyber online

Many times students use the term bullying when another student makes one unwarranted or mean comment toward them.

Here are some key points we have been discussing with our students:

How careless or mean comments and actions can hurt another student.

Juntos Brillamos

Físico (repetido) o Golpear o Empujar o Patear

Verbal (repetido) o Burlas o Insultos o Amenazas

Food Services / Lunch / Breakfast Information

Food Services is getting a number of calls/emails from parents who do not know that we have a NEW online payment center to accept online meal payments and view student meal account information. We no longer use ez school pay and that system will not update with any current school year information. We now use www.k12paymentcenter.com and ALL previous payments/account funds have rolled over into the new system.

SLCUSD is proud to WAIVE ALL REDUCED PRICED MEALS this school year! If your family qualifies for FREE or REDUCED priced meals, you pay ZERO!!! We hope more students will dine with us for breakfast and lunch each day with this charge waived!

Just an FYI that meal benefits will expire on 10/2 for those who were on the program last year and have not filled out a new application this school year. If families have not yet applied, now is the time to avoid being dropped from the program. They can fill out an application online at www.lunchapplication.com OR pick up a paper copy in the office.
