I: So, Elias, tell me about your job. What do you most enjoy about it?

E: Talking to people, definitely. I love chatting with different types of people, getting to know them. You can't imagine what people tell me. Sometimes I feel like I'm their best friend!

I: What do you mean?E: People really open up with cab drivers, at least with

me. They tell me their problems, very private things. I: Like what?E: For instance this morning there was this guy, a hip

hop singer, actually someone I know from TV. Well, he was very nervous and at one point he said: “I'm currently doing a show in Radio City Music Hall and I have nightmares every night. I dream that I'm on stage and I forget the lyrics of my songs.”

I: Wow! And what do you say when they tell you things like that?

E: Well, I try to cheer them up. I say: “Hey, forget about it. Everything is going to be all right. It's not an exam! You are lucky! You do what you love doing.”

I: Does it work?E: I think so, yes. They often say things like: “Thanks,

man, I really appreciate your support.”I: And do you charge them an extra fee for that?E: Nah. I do it because I love my job. I love helping

people, that's a big plus. I'm a very sociable, helpful, generous and modest guy, you know…

1 Read the texts to find each woman's prize category.

Great achievementsWomen Winners1. There are several women among the greatest American novelists of the 20th and 21st century, but there aren't many black women among them. Toni Morrison is a black American writer who is also an editor and a university professor. She started reading books when she was very young and just loved it. In 1949, she entered Howard University in Washington D.C., and studied there for four years. After that, she taught English at Texas Southern University, Houston. Later in life, she wrote many novels such as The Bluest Eye, Sula and Beloved. In 1993, she won the Nobel prize in literature. Her latest book, published in 2012, is called Home.2. Marie Curie was a Polish scientist who won two Nobel Prizes for her work: one in physics in 1903 and the other in chemistry in 1911. There were many things that women couldn't do in those days, so winning a prize like that was really exceptional. In fact, she was the first woman in history to win a Nobel Prize. Today, there are two reasons why she is still famous: first because she discovered radium and also because, thanks to this, the X-ray procedure was invented afterwards. 3. Aung San Suu Kyi is nicknamed the “Iron Butterfly” because she has a very strong will but looks vulnerable at the same time. She was born in 1945 in British Burma. In the 1960s, she studied political science, philosophy and economics in England. In 1988, when she went back to Burma, there were serious problems with human rights in her country, so she became a political activist in favour of democracy. But the Burmese government imprisoned her for 15 years. In 1991, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her political action and finally became a member of the Burmese Parliament in 2012.

13th June 2014

Dear Ms Mills,

I am writing to apply for the job of sales

assistant in your jeweller's shop. I am in Year

eleven at the moment so I am sixteen and I

finish my exams on the 26th June so I can

start at the beginning of July. I have very good

results in both Maths and Science but my

favourite subject at school is Art and Design.

I think I am both hard-working and sociable

and I started baby-sitting two years ago so

I have two or three families who can provide

character references. I have never worked in a

shop but I have a good contact with people in

general.

Yours sincerely,

Samantha Smalls

Hello,

My name's Malcolm and I want to work in you're your shop as soon as possible. I don't like school so I don't go every day. The teachers always tell me off when I'm late on Tuesdays and Thursdays cos because I watch the music videos on Tv at breakfast time. I think I will be good at fighting off thieves and robbers who want to steal jewellery from the shop because I'm tall and strong and I practice on my punching ball every day in the garage. You can ask my gran and my uncle if you want references.

Call me on my mobile 0745 6598. If you've got Facebook I can send you a photo.

Bye

9 Now read these two summer job ads, choose one and write your letter of motivation based on the correct model. Don't forget to include all the necessary information required and mention why you would be good at the job.
