    LOVE.LIFE.

A love greater than thedistance of our birth yearsBy Smartlet

    “TIME is not onour side.”Smartie’s

words left a mark in my

mind, injecting a dose of reality that this blossom-ing relationship is differ-ent from what other cou-ples have—we were bornalmost three decadesapart. Odd as it is, I neverentertained the idea of usbeing together before. Not even hypothetically. Not in my wildest dreams.

We met in the office where

we both work. I belong to therank and file employees whilehe’s one of the higher-ups, my boss actually, the one who signsmy performance cards and ap-proves my leave applications. But unlike other supervisorsand despite his multiple-pagedcurriculum vitae, his feet areplanted on the ground. He’s

very approachable, easy to deal with and kind-hearted. He dele-gates tasks and I follow orders

within my terms of reference.Tracing how it all started, Isurmise that the after-office din-ners with our colleagues drewus closer. We got to talk about

work and things outside of our8-5 lives—from how he prefersless talk and shorter meetingsto interesting things about lawschool to him being a fan of sci-fi movies and to my unreason-able fear of snakes.

Always ready with pieces of pragmatic and realistic advice,he taught me to simplify thingsand care only for those that re-ally matter, avoid regrets andtake only calculated risks. Forsome reason, it became com-fortable for me to share withhim my ideas, dreams, andopinions. We talked about any-thing for discussion’s sake, no

judgments made. Our conversa-tions revealed how his eyes seethe world in a different lightnot most people do. I knew

    then I found a mentor and a

good friend in him, until the wind steered us to a differentdirection last year.

One night, while reading cas-es for the next day’s class, hisname popped on my mobilephone’s screen. It was about himbeing usually shy whenever witha woman he likes. It was him …asking if we could go out togeth-er and talk over dinner. I was soflabbergasted it took me a littlelonger to respond.

“Maybe, when time permits.”Those were the only words

the feisty me was able to say. Ididn’t know what to tell him ex-actly. He was good to me, and Ididn’t want to avoid or pushhim away. Somehow, I wasthrilled because a guy apparent-ly showed interest in me. Butstill, a little apprehension per-sisted.

Then he began exertingmore effort—random food on

my desk, meals together andconstant exchange of messages. Yet, his kind gestures were notenough for me to take “it” seri-ously. Cautious and surprised, Ineeded words coming from hismouth telling straight to my face. Even if my generationlives in a world mediated by technology, hearing those three

words remains non-negotiable.Love is demonstrated throughactions, I know, but one mustprofess it clearly in words that

no other meaning can be de-

duced except that a person is inlove with another. Sincerity dic-tates that love be made known, never to be left to the ambigui-ties of interpretation.

His invitation has awakenedme: There’s a place for him inmy heart. Or has there alwaysbeen? He has lent ears to all my fears, aspirations, and, yes, even corny jokes, and I was toooblivious in recognizing thesigns already screaming and

glaring right under my nose.We clicked well. We decided

to shove doubt into the deepestcorner and wait for what hap-pens next. Life’s really short, so Istarted loosening my uptight self and chased for bliss. Much as Ienjoyed the company, I remainedto be the kind of lover Barthesdescribed as the one who waits,a person who prefers to be still, like a hopeful waiting patiently, staring at the night sky, praying

for a meteor shower. The popular tip in answeringlaw school exams finds applica-tion in real life: Never to go be-

yond what’s explicitly suppliedin the facts. Not to assume, un-less otherwise stated. Despitethe palpable special bond be-tween us, I guarded my heart. No words accompanied his ac-tions so attaching meanings tothem was like putting words in-to his mouth.

More so, one of the cardinal

rules of science trained me not

to easily jump into conclusions.Hence, even if my senses toldme how the sight of his mes-sages brighten my morningsand his scent calms all the wor-ries, I kept my feelings suspend-ed until I finally heard it fromhim, tasted the sweetness of hislove, and was embraced by his

warmth. It wasn’t too long until he

confessed. He explained he triedto hold back until it was so irre-sistible. He took a chance, and

we had an understanding. It wassealed with a kiss under thestars, in a place where we both

walked and frolicked during our younger years albeit not at the

same time. We have resolved tokeep our relationship a secret fornow because of moral ascendan-cy issues.

It’s almost a year after thatbeautiful evening. The pastmonths had been generally calm with some misunderstand-ings due to difference in prefer-ences. I’m a globetrotter, he’s ahomebody. Occasions are spe-cial for me, while he thinks ev-ery day can be a celebration. I

like flowers, but he likes littlesurprises given out of the blue. One day, I know we’ll get thehang of handling our relation-ship. We can begin by acknowl-edging that we’re two differentpeople with divergent likes anddislikes. What’s important isthat we understand each other,at ease even if no words arespoken.

Loving him unraveled many realizations. One is regainingself-respect which was missingin my previous relationship. My personal happiness took thebackseat for another person’sdesires and insecurities. WithSmartie, I’m reminded not toapologize for being myself. A person always comes in a pack-age which his/her significantother must either accept orrefuse. Disagreements are al-

ways there but the goal must beto compromise in the futureand not to find faults or point

fingers. Rough patches shouldnot be a blame game after all.

Quite unbelievable, given thedisparity of our ages, we cantalk unceasingly without run-ning out of topics and filteringstatements. The depth of histhoughts finds a match in my critical mind. Our mental con-nection is way too strong that ittranscends generation barriers;it’s greater and grander thanthe mile-long distance of our

    birth years.

He may be a chapter in my life while I’ll be his last, he toldme once. Our time may not belong as what other relationshipscan have, but we’re going tocherish those moments. It’s notabout the length, but more of the quality of experience we’llhave in each other’s arms.

Life has surprised me bigtime with his coming into my life. The best lesson I’ve learnedis to keep an open mind whenit comes to love. If not for my openness to possibilities, I

would have confined the idea of a partner based on social normsand nearly missed the opportu-nity of being appreciated by a

wonderful man who can readmy mind and say the right

words at the perfect time.“SMARTLET,” a struggling

writer, re ad somewh ere that if a writer loves you, you cannever die. So, she writes about

people, things, and experiencesthat capture her heart, immor-talizing them one story at atime.
