after noon under the auspices of the Amity Lodge No 40 F A M assisted by the surrounding towns under a heavy escort of Knights Templar This was the greatost historic occa sion in the annals of MJllersburg and one to which it can be favor ably compared is the laying of the stone of the old Kentucky Wes leyan College in 1859 No pains or ex pense was spared to make this a suc cess and the occasion will always live as a bright chapter in the history of little town The have done much to secure the rebuilding of this institution There is no wealth here the individual itIzens have gone and from its ashes springs a building nw and mod ern and when completed with the lat est conveniences and equipage will mark a new era in education in this part of the State Much speculation was indulged in re garding the weather on this famous day Many watched the elements al most hourly the previous day A light rain the night before and continued through the early morn ing about noon the sun burst through the clouds and all began to realize that the elements were going to look kindly upon the work and had it not been for this rain the crowd which numbered about 3000 would have been much larger The early trains brought a few visit ors to the town but the 10 40 and 1215 brought the bulk of the intelli gent crowd The Carlisle Commandery arrived at 10 40 in full force bringing with them the Carlisle band The Paris Commandery came in at 12 15 with the Elks band which was em ployed by Amity Lodge of this place A bountiful and elaborate lunch was served in the dining hail of the lunge building by the wives and daughters of the fraternity About 1 oclock the parade was formed in front of the lodge building and was led by Deputy Grand Marshal C W Howard of this place and Miss Elizabeth Veach maid of honor daughter of Past Grand Mas ter of Carlisle followed by the Carlisle band they by the commander ies then the faculty and students body of Millersburg Female College C C Fisher the building com mittee and Architect E Stamler of ParisSecond Elks Band followed by the Blue of Masons from all surrounding towns the rear being brought up by the Grand Offi cers of the day who were Deputy Grand Master S K Veach of Carlisle Grand sword Bearer Fisher of Car lisle Deputy Grand Senior Warden Dr F L Lapsley of Paris Deputy Grand Junior Warden Henry Caywood of North Middletown Deputy Grand Chaplain T W Watts of Millerbsurg Methodist church Senior Deacon Peale Collier and Junior Deacon W A Butler both of Millersburg The procession then moved north taking in all the principal thorough fares of the town closing ranks at the Presbyterian church yard where the exercises for the hour were begun opening with the doxology by the en tire audience followed by an appropri ate prayer by Deputy Grand Chaplain T W Watts A short appeal was then made by President C C Fisher of the institution after which a collec tion was taken by twelve prominent citizens of the pressive ceremony presides over by Deputy Grand Master Veach At the close the entire concourse ac companied by the bands and led by Dr H C Burroughs sang that old famiiar hymn Jesus Lover of My Soul which seemed to penetrate the vaults of heaven while all nations stood still and the little birds in the leafy boughs overhead closed their little beaks and listened with rapt attention to catch the last echoirg sounds as they passed beyond the range of the ear in the undulating air After the benediction the line of march was again taken up and each division hatted in front of the present quarters of the Millersburg Female College where pictures were taken The Knights Templar then escorted the Blue Lodge to the Masonic tem ple where the exercises of the day were formally concluded thus closing the most eventful chapter in the his tory of MiHersburg The Commencement exercises are again on and our little town is once more in holiday attire The examina tion of the college closed Thursday and on Thursday evening between 8 and 9 30 ocloak the entire student body escorted by members of the faculty went out serenading to the delight of all who heard them Their voices blending with the sof light as they sung a number of familiar songs pro duced an indescribable beautiful effect and made us all sing with the poet as we breathed our evening prayers turn back oh turn back wont you time in your flight and make us all young again these commencement nightsOn Friday evening at 8 oclock Misses Anna Earl Brown of Bloom field and Ethel Love Fisher of Mil I T i expression They were greeted by the largest audience ever seen in the opera house on any previous opening night of commencement unless it was at some of the childrens exercises Her program was good and well rendered Miss Fisher deserves special mention in as much she had been sick for sev eral days and it was thought that morning she would not be able to do her work The instrumental music by Misses Booth Hutchcraft and King and the vocal solo by Mrs Johnson added much to the occasion Miss King in structor in elocution should be justly proud of these two graduates Saturday evening at 8 oclock at the same place Misses Ethel Love Fisher Cynthia Willson Thorn Millersburg Katherine Cook of Alexandria from the school of music The numbers were all classical and render ed in an artistic manner Mrs Shan non who is at the head of this depart ment has been with us for several yaers We know just what to expect and were not disappointed The vocal solu by Mrs Johnson and the work by the chorus class deserved more space than we have to give them The ence was large cultured and apprecia tive At 1045 Sunday morning Rev J 0 A Vaught of Frankfort preached the baccalaureate sermon at the Meth odist church Rev Vaught char acterizes him delivered a forcible which is indicativeof much fruit At 7 30 Sunday evening Elder J D Waters of the Christian church of this place preached the annual Mis sionary sermon at the Methodist church The subject of Missions is an old one yet Elder Waters brought out many new thoughts which all will do well to retain The audiences were both large and responsive The re mainder of
