WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

14 English as an Additional Language students from Year 7 and 8 paired up with 7 Sixth Formers

5 x 20 mins of paired reading per week Time of your own choosing Working with younger students and

being their mentor

AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Motivating y7 and y8s to read more and to read for pleasure

Increasing their reading skills Encouraging their interest in reading Showing that one can read for

pleasure – you being their mentors / coaches

Young people with poor reading skills are more likely to: be disengaged from reading for any purpose know how to use a very limited range of reading strategies have a negative attitude towards reading have developed strategies to avoid showing their inability experience problems of low self-esteem and a lack of self-confidence in their

learning become detached from mainstream education be unemployed and experience other forms of social exclusion in adult life.

STRUCTURE OF TEXTNOW

1. Training for the coaches (yourselves): online and at the school

2. Reading Assessment of the mentees (by the Coordinator)

3. Paired Reading starts – 10 weeks of paired reading per week

4. Y7/8s access MyChoice!5. Final review involving yourself, your student

and the Coordinator (every 10 weeks for you)6. You get the personal statement + a written

personalised reference from the Coordinator

Acting as a mentor and teacher to younger people: Enormous satisfaction from seeing younger people develop their confidence and skills: in reading and personal ones
