DEVELOPING MISSION-VISION-STATEGIC ACTION

When boards and principals reflect on the question “Where are we up to?” ... and “Where do we go

from here?”, the school is at an exciting and consequential time of its development. At this critical

juncture it is important that boards and principals keep two strands woven carefully together:

The “DNA” of the school’s reason for being – in this “DNA” is the beating heart of the

school’s mission and a key to its faithfulness to God’s call.

The current beliefs, attitudes, skills, ideas and dynamic engagement of the board, executive

leadership, staff and school community.

The program sampled below is a 5-step process for engaging the creative dynamic of the school’s key

stakeholders to meet tomorrow’s opportunities with the power of the school’s founding mission and

vision.

Step 1: Developing a clearly articulated mission statement for the school

The tasks & processes in this step are focussed on getting the “why” before the “how” & the “what”

by looking at the “DNA” of the school’s mission. Board and other participants reflect on and develop

clearly articulated Mission Statement.

Step 2: Developing Vision

The tasks & processes in this step help board & staff to explore vision as “what you see in your mind’s

eye before it exists” as an outcome of the pursuit of the mission. It could be programs, buildings,

personnel, processes, etc. Your mission objectives will arise from what you see in your mind’s eye and

become the specifics for strategic action.

Step 3: Developing Mission Objectives for the school

The tasks & processes in this step help board & participants to break down their mission into a set of

clearly stated particulars that can be used to direct strategic action.

Step 4: Evaluating status and development needs re mission Objectives

The tasks & processes in this step help board & staff to evaluate the current status of each item of

intentions (mission objectives) and to decide on priorities for action. For example:

Mission objective How well are we currently doing on this item?

Level of importance of this item in the

fulfilment of our mission

Urgency for improving or

developing this item

Develop & maintain Teachers’ biblical Christian w/view and application to curriculum & culture

1.5 4 3

Develop & maintain a continual teacher appraisal and professional learning process

1 4 4

Develop a bible and theology program for all prep -12 students

1 4 3

Step 5: Strategic Action Planning

The tasks & processes of this stage are designed to help board & other participants to develop a set

of clear and actionable statements of intention & timing for key strategies to fulfil each of the

mission objectives for your school. For example:

Mission objectives Proposed action plans Proposed Time Frames

1. Positioning & training of Section Head level leadership

1. Write new Job descriptions for each of executive staff and discuss implementation and empowerment.

March 2010

2. Discuss composition of strategic “Tasks & Projections” document for each of the exec leaders.

May – July 2010

3. Produce operational budget leadership to match leadership responsibility with budget planning & accountability. Setup budget categories & responsible persons. Provide whole $ accounting spreadsheets. Set up communication facility with business office

Commence May 2010

4. Facilitate a leaders’ Retreat with purpose of:

Theoretical and spiritual development of leadership perspectives & skills.

Section & sphere strategic discussions.

Planned for June 2010

5. Regular individual and executive group meetings with view to:

Personal leadership growth.

School culture setting through leadership issue discussion.

Commence Feb 2010

APPENDICES

Appendix1 - Mission/Vision Conventions & Examples:

This appendix presents details & examples of:

a. The Mission Statement as a one sentence “motherhood” statement that is easy for

everybody in the organization to remember and recite. The purpose of a mission is to give

everybody a clear, mentally imprinted notion of what we are really all about so it can be a

minute-by-minute “measuring stick” for every decision they make.

b. Mission Objectives (or “Key Commitments”) as a more detailed, point-form set of

intentions that arise out of the broadly-stated mission statement. The purpose of mission

objectives or key commitments is to give people in the organization some more detail as

reference point for planning and development.

c. The Vision Statement as a longer “visionary” depiction of how the organization sees itself

and what the organization wants to be. The dreams of staff, parents, executive, and board

can be collated processed and condensed for this purpose.

Appendix 2: Processing Dreams – how to turn vision to reality

This appendix outlines a process to help staff to take responsibility for the cultivation of their

visions and their responsible and disciplined implementation in the operations of the school.

Appendix 3: The Golden Circle

This appendix is an inspiring illustration of the “getting the WHY before the WHAT” idea.

Appendix 4: Acme Christian College Mission Statements and Mission Objectives

(working pool)

This appendix contains is an un-sorted list of ideas coming from working groups in an Acme Christian

College retreat. The LH column was collated from discussion re the mission of the school, and the RH

column was collated from discussion coming out of vision/dream processes and attempts to put

down mission objectives to make the mission particular – here is a sample:

Mission Statement points (unprocessed)

Mission objectives ideas (unprocessed)

1. Pursuit of excellence. 2. Striving to be excellent in everything

we do. 3. To equip and maximise the talents of

individual students to reach their God-given potential.

4. Quality student outcomes through continuing vocational growth.

a) Model Christ in our interpersonal relationships. b) Encourage staff to perform their role to the best of their

ability for the furtherance of the kingdom. c) To support staff through holistic development and

evaluation. d) To assist students to identify and maximise their gifts and

talents. e) To ensure students engaged in learning to equip them

for life and service. f) Mentor/coach process shared with colleagues. g)

Appendix 5: Acme Christian College DREAMS – an unprocessed beginning for

vision.

This appendix contains is an un-sorted list that was recorded after the staff, executive and board of

Acme Christian College had discussed at length the mission of their school, then “dreamed” either as

individuals or in their work-groups. – here is a sample:

Nick, Justin, Melissa: Totally Christian curriculum. All students engaged and have a passion

for learning.

Stacie: More playground equipment and ovals.

Paul: Need for a good Biblical Christian curriculum. Hire people to do all this on behalf of

schools.

Jannie: Love a library/information technology centre, 2 GLAs, Hard Court area, shade area,

and accreditation for P-12.

Nathan: Every staff member being passionate about their Christian faith and being

articulate about it.

Dana: Out of brokenness which girls have in particular (looking for love in wrong places),

would love to start a group to teach them to understand their own self-worth.

Neil: All secondary students go overseas and do a mission trip to see God’s work in action

and be part of it. Focus their minds on what God can do in different ways.

Terrence: Flexible schooling where parents can partner with teachers to produce the best

combination of day schooling and distance education.

Steve: re-education of the Christian church regarding Christian education so that the

distinctiveness of it is embraced so that it becomes normal for churches to embrace this like

they do Sunday schools.
