which supported our Thanksgiving gift of food certifi-
cates to 50 families and adopted over 40 families for
Christmas. We thank you for continued contribution of
food throughout the year which help us to provide for
families in need. We are truly blessed by your generous
support.
SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God’s sur-prises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtain-ing the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant
preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportuni-ties for surprises. For the bridegroom in today’s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Je-sus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today’s famil-iar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody’s life—not neces-sarily our own—will be surprised for the better. Copyright © J. SORPRESAS La vida está llena de sorpresas, algunas agra-dables, otras no. La Sagrada Escritura está llena de relatos sobre las sorpresas de Dios que surgen donde menos se esperan: los hijos más jóvenes reciben la herencia, a los más humildes se les dan los sitios de honor; un predicador itinerante, con-denado a morir como un criminal, es exaltado hacia la gloria celestial eterna. Cualquiera que haya planificado una boda o celebración similar sabe que está llena de oportuni-dades para que surjan sorpresas. Para el novio (el cual, en el relato bíblico, no tiene contacto directo con Jesús) la agradable sorpresa vino porque otra persona había prestado atención y tenía fe en Je-sús. A lo mejor pensamos que la lección de la cono-cida historia de las bodas de Caná es que cuando tenemos fe en Jesús, nuestra vida cambiará positi-vamente. Sin embargo, un cristiano necesita tener una perspectiva más amplia, y darse cuenta que tener fe en Cristo implica que la vida de alguien –sea la tuya, sea la de otra persona– va a mejorarse sorpresivamente. Be certain that you show the child great love and concern through calm, reflective words of understanding and compassion. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Although our tradition carries a long memory of mar-
riage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for
nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremo-
ny approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence
of priests blessing marriages as early as the second century,
in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities
to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases,
society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male
heads of households.
From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair,
managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest
and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep
the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for
his sons, paying a “bride price” as compensation for the loss
of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that sounds, it
was a step up from the kidnapping practice of earlier years.
Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs re-
mained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnapping of
the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivi-
ties, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father’s
gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed
her a piece of “sacred cake,” initiating her into a new way of
life. It’s fascinating to see how customs endure, long after
we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy There is an aspect of mercy that goes be-yond the confines of the Church. It relates us to Judaism and Islam, both of which con-sider mercy to be one of God’s most im-portant attributes. Israel was the first to receive this revelation which continues in history as the source of an inexhaustible richness meant to be shared with all man-
kind. As we have seen, the pages of the Old Testament are steeped in mercy…… Among the privileged names that Islam attributes to the Creator are “Merciful and Kind”. This invoca-tion is often on the lips of faithful Muslims who feel them-selves accompanied and sustained by mercy in their daily weak-ness. (S23)

TOGETHER IN MISSION In today’s readings we are told of the different gifts, forms of service, and workings that come from God. These manifestations of the Spirit come to fruition through us, for we have ability to give the gifts of faith, healing, and of mighty deeds. Today God calls upon each one of us here to share our gifts with our brothers and sisters in Christ that are in need of them. Through Together in Mission we can share our mighty deeds and give the healing and faith to the communities that simply would not be here without them. Though our church is large, our strength lies not in our numbers, but in our compassion and ability to respond. Every gift, regardless of the size, matters. What is important is that we give what we can and answer this calling of our faith. During all Masses next weekend, we will conduct the in-pew process for the collection of gifts & pledges to this year’s appeal. Together we can make sure God’s love and presence are felt by all, especially those in need. God bless you for your generous response and support.

Our Retreat Weekend
at Sacred Heart Retreat House Ladies! It is that time once again to set aside 48 hours to be in
quiet conversation with Our Lord on the grounds of the Sacred
Heart Retreat House in Alhambra.
This year’s theme ties in with Pope Francis’s call to a year of
Mercy, “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).
During the weekend of March 16-18, which includes Palm
Sunday, we will be hearing a new (to us) Retreat Master, John Paul
Oullette, CFR. I’ve not heard Father John Paul, but I’ve heard three
other Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFR) and they are awe-
some! They work in the Bronx and Chicago with the poorest and
most troubled youth, yet they are so upbeat. With God’s grace.
This year, a generous benefactor to the SHRH has offered fi-
nancial aid allowances to each parish in the SHRH family of parish-
es! If you know someone wants to come on this retreat but is only
able to pay for part of the cost, she can contact us for the financial
assistance. Please contact Lorraine (below) for more details.
The retreat weekend is 48 hours, starting Friday night at 5:00
and ending Sunday at 12:30, following 11:30 Mass. Because March
18 is Palm Sunday, you may want to invite your spouse or other
family members to join us in the Chapel for that closing Mass.
Retreat weekends include five meals served to you in the Re-
treatants Dining Room, five preached conferences from Fr. John
Paul, confession at several times. There is time for quiet meditation
in the small garden niches, or relaxing in your bedroom. The gift
shop is open and has items for First Holy Communion, as well as
books, CDs, and religious articles. Accommodations include Dou-
ble, Semi-Private, and Private rooms. There is a Saturday Only
Commuter sign-up, including 3 meals, 3 conferences and all men-
tioned above except a bedroom.
We share this weekend with other parishes, so please contact
me soon if you are interested.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1502 el fraile Nicolás de Ovando y doce francisca-nos dieron inicio a la evangelización de América en la Repúbli-ca Dominicana. Ellos fueron enviados por los reyes españoles con el mandato de convertir a los nativos “sin les hacer fuer-za alguna”. Con los misioneros llegaron Alfonso y Antonio Trejo quie-nes traían con ellos un cuadro de la Virgen María bajo la advo-cación de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia. Ellos la llevaron a Higuey, donde en 1572 se le construyó su primer santuario. Poco a poco esta pequeña imagen se convirtió en la Reina del corazón de los dominicanos. María observa dulcemente a su recién nacido quien yace sobres las pajas. Está coronada y lleva puesto un manto azul rociado de estrellas y un escapulario blanco. Lleva una aureola hecha de doce estrellas. En una esquina de la imagen san José también observa al niño por encima del hombro derecho de María. El 25 de enero del 1979 Juan Pablo II la coronó por ser la primera evangelizadora del continente Americano. FREE CITIZENSHIP CLASSES FROM CATHOLIC CHARITIES
Catholic Charities of Los Angeles is offering free Citizen-ship Classes to help Lawful Permanent Residents study for the citizenship exam. The classes start in early February and will go until early May. Those interested in registering can call 213-251-3523. Students will also be provided free assistance with completing the application for naturalization. Respect Life Activities in Reparation for Abortion
On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court le-galized abortion for all nine months of pregnancy in all 50 states. In the 43 years since that decision, almost 60 million of our most vulnerable citizens have been killed before they were born. We are all called to repent the loss of these God-given lives and to celebrate God's great gift of Life. Here are oppor-tunities to do so next weekend, in person and/or on Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), which can be viewed online at EWTN.com, on cable (Uverse), and satellite (DISH and Direct-TV) television. Friday, 22 January, 12:00 to 1:00 pm Rosary Prayer Vig-il for Life led by the Knights of Columbus, in front of the 9th Circuit of Appeals, 125 S. Saturday, 23 January 12:00 to 4:00 pm OneLifeLA This 2nd annual celebration of life in downtown Los Angeles begins with a walk from La Placita Olvera to Grand Park in front of City Hall, where there will be pro-life speakers, entertainment, food, exhibits, for school, family, parish and community partic-ipation.
