Educational/Enrichment Opportunities 21st Century Leadership Exploring Leadership Values in the Spirit of Pope Francis I For Use In Our Homes, Ministry, Where We Give Care To Others, And In Places Where We Encounter The Needy— Presenter: Chris Lowney, Saturday, March 14, 2015, 9 a.m. til 12:30 p.m., National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville, IL.. See information on bulletin board. This past week the Clint Eastwood movie “ American Sniper” has been the subject on many people’s minds, especially those who saw the movie. It is the true story of Chris Kyle, a member of the unique Navy Seals. He saved the lives of countless soldiers and civilians during the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The movie is based on the life of Chris Kyle. I saw the movie last Sunday and will agree with most that it was an emotionally charged movie. Most of us have been isolated from the violence and truth of war. I remember all too vividly when I was a kid watching the evening news and seeing flashed be- fore my eyes, the “ kill ratio” for the Vietnam war. The recent war on terror was conveniently sanitized when it was reported by the major news outlets. Most go their own way not knowing exactly what is happening—but don’t really feel the impact unless you know someone personally who is deployed. Our country is blessed with young men and women willing to give their ALL to keep us safe. Chris Kyle writes about his faith in his autobiography. "I was raised with, and still believe in, the Christian faith. If I had to order my priorities, they would be God, Country, Family," Kyle wrote. "There might be some debate on where those last two fall — these days I've come around to believe that Family may, under some circumstances, outrank Country. But it's a close race." This week in the Gospel reading, Jesus continues to call his disciples. Jesus says, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Jesus called his disciples, they left everything behind and followed him. We are called to follow Jesus and to become his disciples. Those in the military leave their father and mother behind traveling to where they are deployed. Not to be a spoiler for those who haven’t seen American Sniper—but faith made it’s way into a secular movie. After Chris geared up with probably one hundred pounds, he added one small item to his gear—a small personal bible that he carried with him. In his autobiography he admits that he didn’t read it much, but he kept it with him throughout his many tours. Keeping Jesus close to our hearts as we travel through our many trials of life reminds us of the sacrifices that he made for each of us. Concluding with a personal observation and comments from others: As people filed out of American Sniper, there was not a sound. Complete silence, people (including myself) were lost in emotions and the impact the movie made on their personal lives. That is the emotion that we should all feel after receiving Jesus through the Eucharist. Jesus asks us to follow him, to be his disciples, to be part of his family of faith. Exploring the Holy Land

Our adult education program continues on Monday evenings from 6:30 —8 p.m. in the St. Boniface Meeting Room. Our topic is a DVD series entitled

“The Holy Land Revealed” hosted by Dr. Jodi Magness. This series provides an excellent introduction of the Holy Land by using tools such as archeology and textual analysis to better understand the importance of this geographic area for the Abrahamic religions. Dr. Magness explores the history of this region from the Canaanites (around 3000 B.C.E.) up through the Muslim

conquest (around 640 C.E.) Please join us for food, fellowship, and learning. Date Topic January 26 Masada and Suicide February 2 The Second Jewish Revolt February 9 Holy Sites under Christianity February 16 Jerusalem, Islam, and Archeology

Prayer in honor of St. Blaise O GOD, deliver us through the intercession of Thy

holy Bishop and martyr Blase, from all evil of soul and body, especially from all ills of the throat; and grant us the grace to make a good confession in the confident hope of obtaining Thy pardon, and ever to

praise with worthy lips Thy most holy name. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
