THANK YOU!

ABOUT MEHello there! I am glad you decided to take a look at my portfolio. My name is TJ Cogen and I am a passionate about design; from graphic design to architecture. After high school I was lost in making a decision between studying architecture and graphic design. After a year in an Art and Design Fundimentals course, which provided a breif experience in both fields, I fell in love with graphic design. I am currently enrolled in the graphic design program at Georgian College. The one thing I’ve learned while at school is that in order to be successful you have to understand the rules before you break them. It’s time to break them.

GRUNGE TYPOGRAPHY EDITORIAL

2 Page Layout Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Photoshop

A two-page editorial spread for a fictional design publication, the topic being a

recognized design style, grunge typography. The editorial content is self written copy

based off of research. Included in the copy is; how the movement developed, the time

period in which it developed, and major contributors to the style/movement.

I chose to spread the headline across the workspace because doing this created a visual element, a requirement in the

assignment. By doing this it also allows the reader to easily see what the editorial content is. The word “graphic” is in serif typeface because it was ironic how such

a beautiful typeface (Adobe Caslon Pro) could be used for what can be described as a dirty looking style. It also contrasts

the remaining headline/subhead typefaces used with are all san-serif. I chose other

typefaces used in the headline because they had an expressive quality to them. “Wild side” feels wild, and “design” are

strong and concise but still fitting to the grunge feel. The typographic settings in “design” and “wild side” are also set

irregularly following the grunge ideals.

NEUTRAFACE EDITORIAL

2 Page Layout Adobe Indesign

Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop

A two page editorial, featuring an self written article on a typeface of choice,

Neutraface. The one page is conceptual, depicting the personality of the typeface,

the other page containing the article. Neutraface is a geographic and somewhat

humanist typeface, represented in the conceptual page of the layout. The

geometric shapes create an intersting visual on thier own, but with a closer look the

squares and circles take on a resemblence of a human figure.

JAMES BOND CASINO ROYALE

INFOGRAPHIC TIMELINE

Adobe Illustrator

The goal of this piece was to create an effective info-graphic timeline based on

the plot structure of a motion picture of choice. The timeline must include a

representation of the characters in the film, a linear structure, and portray key scenes

in the movie. The criteria stated above can be represented in any way; as icons, simple illustrations, shapes or colour. The overall visual style of the info-graphic should also

resemble the film of choice.

To provide a dynamic linear timeline, and to create a visual resemblance to the film Casino Royale, the classic scene of James Bond seen through the barrel of a gun was chosen as the template of the info-graphic. Since the film Casino Royale’s most significant moments are located around a poker table it was important to capture a visual feel related to the card game. To build on this, additional elements such as diamonds, spades, clubs, and hearts were placed to follow the line created by the scene shot stated above. The focal point, usually containing a illustration of James Bond, was filled with a poker chip with the movie lettermark placed in the center of the chip. More subtle is the green background of the composition, resembling the poker table. With all these elements added the swirl initially created was lost, so to bring it more visual power a gold line was added. The line followed the dynamic shape of the swirl. Gold was chosen to represent the gold trim found on high end poker tables, such as the one in the film.

In Casino Royale, the main characters are generally all present in the film once they had been introduced, so to show individual character icons as well as scene icons seemed redundant. The approach that the character’s introduction would be treated as a key scene and the character therefore represented that way was selected. Three main characters were selected; James Bond, Vesper, and Le Chiffre. To represent both the introduction of James Bond and the scene in which he gains his 00 status was resembled by a simple illustration of Bond and the Bond logo. The character James Bond already has a very strong existing visual identity so to use that was a no brainer. Vesper and her introduction are symbolized by a graphic of Vesper’s necklace and the money symbol. Vesper’s necklace is individual to her and therefore makes a good icon to represent her, as for the money symbol, she is the agent who was selected to manage the money put up by MI6 in the high stakes poker match.
