As such, the course aims to equip students to understand and evaluate better the methods and statistical perspectives of research studies reported in academic journals and books in the field, to help students acquire the concepts and skills necessary to design, analyse and report their own studies, and to familiarize students with the rationale and use of a comprehensive range of techniques and methods for analysing quantitative language data using SPSS. Teaching method: Lectures, classroom applications, student presentations. Prerequisites: None. Teaching aids: PowerPoint presentation, reference books, articles, computers, SPSS. Assessment method: Throughout the semester, students need to submit ten written assignments. In these assignments, students are asked to analyse the data provided by the lecturer and report them appropriately. The assignments account for 40% of students’ overall scores. In addition, students are expected to conduct a research study and report their findings in a research paper constituting of at least 3000 words. This accounts for 50% of students’ overall scores. Those who (are accepted to) publish their studies in an international journal automatically receive 100 points for the written research report. Apart from the written report, students also need to present their research studies in a 15-minute oral presentation session at the end of the semester. This will have a contribution of 10% over their overall grades. Those who (are accepted to) present their studies at a conference, automatically receive 100 points for the presentation session. Please remember that the written assignments and the research paper must be submitted through Turnitin.
