Coursedescription:TheaimofthiscourseistointroducestudentstobasicdescriptiveandinferentialstatisticsinAppliedLinguistics. As such, the course aims to equip students to understand and evaluate better themethodsandstatisticalperspectivesofresearchstudiesreportedinacademicjournalsandbooksinthe field, to help students acquire the concepts and skills necessary to design, analyse and reporttheirownstudies,andtofamiliarizestudentswiththerationaleanduseofacomprehensiverangeoftechniquesandmethodsforanalysingquantitativelanguagedatausingSPSS.
Teachingmethod:Lectures,classroomapplications,studentpresentations.
Prerequisites:None.
Teachingaids:PowerPointpresentation,referencebooks,articles,computers,SPSS.
Assessmentmethod:Throughouttheterm,youneedtosubmitfivewrittenassignments(40%)inwhichyouareexpectedto analyse the data provided by the lecturer and report them in accordance with the analysingtechniquesinthesyllabus.Attheendoftheterm,youneedtosubmitawrittenresearchpaperofatleast 3,000 words (50%) in which you report your research findings. You will also deliver an oralpresentation of your research (10%). Five written assignments will contribute to your mid-termexamination score whereas research paper and oral presentation contribute to your final grade.Please remember that the five written assignments and the research paper must be submittedthroughTurnitin.Pleaserefertothe instructionstoretrieveyourclass IDandpasswordalongwithinformationabouthowtosubmityourassignmentsthroughTurnitin.
