As such, the course aims to equip students to understand and evaluate better the methods and statistical perspectives of research studies reported in academic journals and books in the field, to help students acquire the concepts and skills necessary to design, analyse and report their own studies, and to familiarize students with the rationale and use of a comprehensive range of techniques and methods for analysing quantitative language data using SPSS. Teaching method: Lectures, classroom applications, student presentations. Prerequisites: None. Teaching aids: PowerPoint presentation, reference books, articles, computers, SPSS. Assessment method: Throughout the term, you need to submit five written assignments (40%) in which you are expected to analyse the data provided by the lecturer and report them in accordance with the analysing techniques in the syllabus. At the end of the term, you need to submit a written research paper of at least 3,000 words (50%) in which you report your research findings. You will also deliver an oral presentation of your research (10%). Five written assignments will contribute to your mid-term examination score whereas research paper and oral presentation contribute to your final grade. Please remember that the five written assignments and the research paper must be submitted through Turnitin. Please refer to the instructions to retrieve your class ID and password along with information about how to submit your assignments through Turnitin.
