I have been hearing a lot chatter and concern from different acquaintances and business friends concerning the so called October 1, 2015 deadline to be EMV Card compliant. I am sure that most of you have had some kind of contact with a provider that has given you the straight facts and perhaps even had contact with the ones out there who paint the picture a little differently. EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard and Visa. It is the new cards being issued that contain not only the magnetic swiping strip but a chip that can be dipped if you have the new EMV POS terminals. EMV cards are more secure as the chip can not be duplicated like the magnetic strips can. What I think is important to point out here for our members is that there is no mandate that you have EMV capable equipment by October 1, again there is no deadline. What is going to happen on that date is the burden of liability for a fraudulent transaction is likely going to shift to the merchant in the form of a charge back. Another myth is you will not be able to use your current readers. That is a wrong as the new EMV cards also contain a magnetic strip that can be swiped just like you have always done. If you are EMV capable that is great but don’t expect to be using it much on October 1st as it is estimated that there are only about 10% of American Consumers with one and of that amount only a third have used it. So my advice for what it is worth, don’t panic and rush out and do something hasty. Take your time and do the research. Your provider should be able to offer good sound facts and advice. There is no need to be pushed by a deadline date that does not exist. There is no doubt the day will come where you will have to handle the EMV cards but again it is not October 1, 2015 like some would have you believe. I sincerely hope that you are planning on being with us on Saturday October 10th at the 58th Rubber Ball and Scholarship awards banquet. We have put together a very affordable event at one of the finest facilities in Western PA. Come out and show the young people receiving awards how much we care about them. Until next month I ask you to please support the association that supports you the TDA of WPA and God Bless America.

Beware of the “All-Wheel Drive” Vehicle The following is a reprint of an article that I wrote some years ago, but the content is just as relevant to-day as it was then. Today, more than ever, all-wheel drive vehicles are turning up in shops just like yours and mine for tires and service. It is important to understand that we must pay extra attention to these vehicles. First, let’s realize that four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are different. Four-wheel drive vehicles are usually vehicles that go from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive with the flip of a switch or, “back in the day,” require someone to manually engage the hubs from outside the vehicle. All-wheel drive vehicles are all-wheel drive all the time; or, more accurately stated, they automatically become all-wheel drive when the vehicle’s computer detects the need. So, the driver really does not have to do anything. The concern with “these” vehicles is that some makes and models, because of differences in design and technology, do not tolerate even the smallest differences in tire diameter. If a customer shows up for two tires, we need to recognize the potential problems of mixing two new tires with two existing tires. The car manufactures’ and tire manufacturers’ position is to replace all four tires whenever the vehicle is in need of tires. This is, of course, the recommendation that we should always make as well. But, what if two of the tires have 2/3 of their tread and the customer can’t afford four tires? What if a customer shows up with one blown out tire that can’t be repaired and the other three tires have 8,000 miles on them? As is often the case, the vehicle and tire manufacturers do not have an answer for the complex circumstances that we on the front lines have to face every day. Often what I have done is to explain to the customer that the vehicle is an all-wheel drive vehicle, and the system’s tolerance to mixing new tires with existing tires could affect the performance of the all-wheel drive. Within the last two months, on two different occasions, we installed two tires on all-wheel drive vehicles that resulted in the vehicle returning with a “shudder.” Fortunately, on both occasions, we had made a recommendation of four tires, and informed the customer that there could be a problem with installing only two tires on the vehicle. I recall the one to be an early model Lincoln Navigator and the other a Jeep Grand Cherokee. On both occasions we were able to sell the two additional tires to the customer and resolve the shudders. The Jeep had, however, returned to the store the next day when I was not there, and our technician had spent approximately an hour going over the vehicle (because we had also performed mechanical repairs) and he was convinced the problem was in the transmission, having no idea about the conversation I had with the customer the previous day. Many of us think of all-wheel drive as 50% front power, 50% rear. But many of these systems, particularly the newer ones, are running around in a two-wheel drive mode until the computer detects slipping, and then distributes more drive to the other wheels on an as-needed basis. Like all technologies, it is often the earlier, less-advanced systems that have less tolerance to differences in tire diameter. I would go as far as to say that, as often as possible, after talking to your customers and taking into account all the cir-cumstances, that if you decide to install anything less than a full set of tires on an all-wheel drive vehicle, there would be less chance of problems if you could get the exact model and manufacture of tires. We would all like to believe that every tire manufacturer and model in the same size are dimensionally identical, but, in reality, they are not. Let’s all try to enjoy the rest of the summer while it lasts. As always, Good Luck and Good Selling!
