A new standard for an optimized local treatment of chronic wounds

M.O.I.S.T. - The new standard for the optimized local treatment of chronic wounds

The diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic wounds is an enormous challenge in various disciplines of medicine, therefore an effective treatment concept is indispensable. The local treatment of chronic wounds was usually based on the T.I.M.E. concept – but T.I.M.E. is not able to cover all available treatment options.

As an orientational aid in the local treatment of chronic wounds, the Wound-D.A.CH. has introduced M.O.I.S.T. as a new concept for the local treatment of chronic wounds. The M.O.I.S.T. concept is intended to further develop the ideas of the T.I.M.E. concept and combines all modern treatment methods. The factors described with „T“, „I“ and „M“ cer-tainly continue to be timely and important. During the past decade many new aspects and treatment options have become available and thus new, innovative treatment options are

missing. These are now described by „O“ and „S”.

The innovative M.O.I.S.T.-concept was developed to support therapists, practitioners and prospective wound care managers to provide a systematic planning in the local treatment of patients with chronic wounds. M.O.I.S.T. combines all modern diagnostic and treatment strategies – this new standard of wound treatment helps to improve the therapy of patients suffering by chronic wounds.

M – Moisture balance

The moisture balance respectively exudate management has for several decades been the gold standard for treating chronic wounds. Care must be taken to ensure that wounds are neither too moist nor too dry – in this cases superabsorbers or hydrogels should be used.

O – Oxygen balance

In the pathophysiology of chronic wounds, hypoxia (the lack of oxygen in wounds) plays a decisive, central role in nearly all types of wounds. For local therapy this means that treatment options can be used that reestablish the oxygen balance.

I – Infection control

Infection control describes all antimicrobial strategies in wound therapy regimes. The prevention of infection, eradication of multiresistant pathogens (MRP) or treatment of local infections in the local therapy of chronic wounds uses antiseptics or specific wound dressings.

S – Support

If despite an apparently adequate therapy wounds do not heal, specific wound care agents temporarily can be used. They are propagated that they actively intervene in the disturbed wound healing process.

T – Tissue management

Tissue management describes all measures of conditioning the wound bed. Depending on the method, its use can support the processes of debridement, wound cleaning, granulation, or also reepithelialization.

A starfish for an optimized wound treatment

An effective therapy concept forms the basis for a successful treatment of chronic wounds. Therefore Wund-D.A.CH., the umbrella organization of German-speaking wound healing societies and associations, has developed the new M.O.I.S.T.-concept – the first concept that combines all modern treatment methods. The starfish TOM assists the public establishment of the new standard in wound treatment. His name is an acronym for “Treatment optimization (with) M.O.I.S.T.” – the declared aim of the innovative concept. Each of his five arms symbolizes one treatment option of M.O.I.S.T.

Exemplary treatment options

The acronym M.O.I.S.T. describes an advanced concept for the local treatment of chronic wounds. Here are examples of the different treatment options.
