If you are a first-time attendee or a long-time member; if you are black, brown, white or anything in between; if you are gay, straight, bisexual, lesbian, or transgender; if you are a Native American

or an immigrant friend; if you are lay or clergy, male or female, gender neutral or non-binary, young or old, abled or differently-abled, rich or poor; no matter what you believe or what you

doubt, no matter what you count on, or what you question, you are not only welcome here, you are celebrated here!

We acknowledge that you are a gift of the Creator, and an individual wonder of God’s creation. Together, we are family of God,

because we are gathered in the name of the One who makes us one.

St. John’s has been affiliated with Reconciling Ministries Network since 1998, when we adopted a statement affirming the sacred worth of all God’s children, including lesbian,

gay, bisexual, and transgender people. We celebrate our diversity, and we welcome all people to join us in our journey together toward greater understanding and mutual respect.

Gathering Rev. Kevin Young Prelude Clint Barrick Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence 17th Century French Chant Call to Worship for World Communion Sunday Sally Abbe

We gather on World Communion Sunday to imagine the world with which we desire to be in communion. We gather as followers of Jesus, whose ongoing hope is to proclaim the reign of God until it comes. We announce the worldwide communion until it becomes a reality. We press on toward that which God has in store. We celebrate the world as it is, at the same time that we long for the world as it will be. On World Communion Sunday we acknowledge that the body of Christ is bigger than what we can see, bigger than what is contained within our walls. We celebrate the diversity that is, and the diversity that could be. We come to embrace the fullness of God’s world that surrounds us. We are pressing on to a truer reflection of God’s kin-dom in our everyday life.

Hymn of Praise, No. 702 The United Methodist Hymnal Sing with All the Saints in Glory HYMN TO JOY

THE WORSHIP OF GOD 10:30A.M.

1. Sing with all the saints in glory, sing the resurrection song!

Death and sorrow, earth's dark story, to the former days belong.

All around the clouds are breaking, soon the storms of time shall cease;

in God's likeness we, awaking, know the everlasting peace.

2. O what glory, far exceeding all that eye has yet perceived!

Holiest hearts, for ages pleading, never that full joy conceived.

God has promised, Christ prepares it, there on high our welcome waits.

Every humble spirit shares it; Christ has passed th'eternal gates.

3. Life eternal! heaven rejoices: Jesus lives, who once was dead.

Join we now the deathless voices; child of God, lift up your head!

Patriarchs from the distant ages, saints all longing for their heaven,

prophets, psalmists, seers, and sages, all await the glory given.

4. Life eternal! O what wonders

crowd on faith; what joy unknown, when, amidst earth's closing thunders,

saints shall stand before the throne! O to enter that bright portal, see that glowing firmament;

know, with thee, O God Immortal, "Jesus Christ whom thou has sent!"

PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE

Lesson from the Hebrew Scriptures Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20 Leslie Cranford

Then God spoke all these words: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not acquit anyone who misuses my name.

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the

LORD your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's

house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or any-thing that belongs to your neighbor.

When all the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking, they were afraid and trembled and stood at a distance, and said to Moses, "You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, or we will die." Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come only to test you so that you will give weight to God, so that you do not sin."

THANKSGIVING AND COMMUNION ***CAMERA BREAK***

Invitation to the Table

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who earnestly turn away from wrong and harm, all who seek to live together in unity and forgiveness. In the light of God’s grace, let us confess our shortcomings and claim for ourselves the love and mercies of God.

Prayer of Confession God of grace, we confess that the world with which we desire to be in communion is broken. We have created connections, but many connections still need to be made. Populations sur-round our homes and churches that are unknown to us. Help us to represent your all-inclusive welcome to those who are near to us yet different from us. Free us from the idolatry of same-ness that we might joyfully welcome your inclusive reign. We pray in the name of Jesus, who

Prior to Children’s Sermon: Jesus loves me! this I know,

For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong;

They are weak, but He is strong.

After Children’s Sermon: Yes, Jesus loves me Yes, Jesus loves me Yes, Jesus loves me

The Bible tells me so

proclaimed your reign’s dawning. Amen.

Words of Assurance Hear the good news:

The steadfast love of God never ceases. God’s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is God’s faithfulness, revealed to us in Christ the Son. In the name of Jesus we are forgiven. Praise God! Amen.

Taking the Bread and Cup The Great Thanksgiving for World Communion Sunday, Musical Setting A p. 17 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We lift our praises to you...And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you...So we gather, here in this place, with all, everywhere, who are joined with us to remember your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, to remember that we are one body because of him; and together we pro-claim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. The bread and wine that we eat and drink...Through your Son Jesus Christ, with your Holy Spirit in your Ho-ly Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. Sharing the Bread and Cup Music for Communion Amazing Grace Arr. John Rutter

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch; like me!

I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come:

'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

The Lord hath promised good to me, His word my hope secures;

He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures.

The hour I first believed!

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease:

I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we first begun.

SENDING FORTH

Acts of Faith Rev. Kevin Young Hymn of Faith, No. 547 The United Methodist Hymnal O Church of God, United ELLACOMBE

Benediction Rev. Kevin Young

Let us go from this time together, humbled, seeking not only the face of God, but God’s divine touch as well. May God revive in our spirits the living essence of God’s Word made flesh. May the abiding spirit of God’s beloved Son be so manifest in us that the grace and mercy of Jesus will be freely poured out on the whole world. Let us go to live as children of God, in God’s holy name. Amen.

Please remain online for the Postlude.

Postlude Clint Barrick Fugue on a Eucharistic Theme Francois Couperin (1688 -1733)

1 O church of God, united to serve one common Lord,

proclaim to all one message, with hearts in glad accord. Christ ever goes before us;

we follow day by day with strong and eager footsteps

along the upward way.

2 From every land and nation the ordered ranks appear; to serve one valiant leader

they come from far and near. They chant their one confession,

they praise one living Lord, and place their sure dependence

upon his saving word.

3 Though creeds and tongues may differ, they speak, O Christ, of thee;

and in thy loving spirit we shall one people be.

Lord, may our faithful service and singleness of aim

proclaim to all the power of thy redeeming name.

4 May thy great prayer be answered

that we may all be one, close bound, by love united in thee, God's blessed Son: to bring a single witness,

to make the pathway bright, that souls which grope in darkness

may find the one true light.

Christ: the Tekton

Kelly Latimore

Commissioned by Kevin Rains.

"I started painting icons in 2011 while I was a member of the Common Friars from 2009-2013. Our collective work was about being more connected: to our-selves, each other, our surrounding community and the land. This manifest-ed itself as a place called “The Good Earth Farm” where we held weekly services and meals, and grew produce for our com-munity and local food pantries. Iconography has since become a practice of more considerations: of color and light, of brush stroke and form, symbol and meaning...However, I do not wish to ap-proach Iconography as an art form that simply follows an inherited tradition, knowledge and practice. I want it to be a creative process, meditation, and practice that brings about new self knowledge for the viewer and myself. Who are the saints that are among us here and now? I was not taught by a traditional Icono-grapher, and so to some, I am breaking many rules. There are icons here that people may find theologically un-sound and wrong, or for others, helpful and inspiring. I think both reactions are important. My hope is that these icons do what all art can potentially do, which is, to create more dialogue. The other may have something to teach us about what we know, about who God is, the world we live in and who are our neighbors. This is the real work of being human and of art. Being more present."
