Today we address the question, “What is a challenging math curriculum, deeper and broader or faster?” I oer the following personal experience I had substitute teaching for a 7 th grade math class. The class was studying multiplication and division of mixed numbers and fractions (3 ½ X 2/3 for example). The assignment of the day was to complete about 50 such problems. The problems became increasingly more dicult as students worked through the worksheet. My observations told me that most of the students were completing the task accurately and eciently. Then I drew a couple of pizzas on the board and asked for volunteers to demonstrate the meaning of one of the algorithms they had worked, ¾ X ½. Maybe it was because I was a substitute teacher, but no student could show me what ¾ X ½ actually represented. They could all do the algorithm, but no one could demonstrate what it meant. Could it be that a curriculum that encourages the demonstration of deep and broad understanding, as well as collaboration and creativity, is more challenging than one in which students move quickly through complex algorithms, but whose students do not understand what they are doing? This is an important question, because the materials we are piloting emphasize understanding, not quickly progressing through the performance of algorithms. March 26 Minimum Day There is no charge for extended care between 11:45 and 3:00 p.m. this Wednesday, March 26. It’s March; Let’s Keep The “Madness” On The Basketball Court! We have had a safe and courteous year of driving in our parking lot area. Let’s ALL finish the year strong by continuing to make safety THE priority around cars and children. Terra Nova Testing This Week This week marks our annual Terra Nova standardized testing for grades 1-8. Help your children do their best by making sure they get plenty of sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast. Please make sure your children are present every day during this week for the testing periods. Today we address the question, “What is a challenging math curriculum, deeper and broader or faster?” I offer the following personal experience I had substitute teaching for a 7th grade math class. The class was studying multiplication and division of mixed numbers and fractions (3 ½ X 2/3 for example). The assignment of the day was to complete about 50 such problems. The problems became increasingly more difficult as students worked through the worksheet. My observations told me that most of the students were completing the task accurately and efficiently.

Boys Soccer Season Wrap Up:The boys capped off a sensational season by going 2-0 on Saturday to capture 5th place in the BACSAL Championship Tournament. In the first game, the Tigers took down Fremont Christian by a score of 2-1. Josh N. tallied two assists to go along with goals by Ben J. and Joe W. to lead the Tigers. In the final game, the Tigers defeated Redwood Christian by a score of 1-0. Ryan M. and Joe W. connected early to put the Tigers ahead and they never looked back. Stellar defense stifled the Redwood offense as Ben W. collected his first shutout of the season.

The boys finished the season with a overall record of 10-1. Going undefeated in the regular season and earning a South Division title, their only loss came to the eventual BACSAL champions, San Ramon Valley Christian Academy. A BIG congratulations to all the players on a great season. Thank you to coach Tigue and coach Maxwell for their efforts coaching this year.

Up Next - Boys Volleyball!Up next for the boys is volleyball! If you are interested in playing this year there will be a informational meeting on Thursday, at lunch, in room 16.

Teacher Tales Spotlight on the Tech Team! Check this section each week for exciting stories about teachers doing great things in the classrooms of San Jose Christian School.

This week, in honor of staff appreciation week, we would like to feature a couple of our staff members who rarely get the thanks they deserve: our wonderful Tech Team!

John Wynbeek and Dan Werder spend countless hours volunteering at our school. They order, assemble, troubleshoot, and repair all of our technology on campus. In addition to the “behind the scenes” work, they also work with students in middle school to make sure our 1 to 1 laptop program runs smoothly and productively. Add all of the upkeep they do for our servers and network, and you may start to see why they are such invaluable members of our team. And that’s not even including all of the last-minute emergency calls when something goes wrong in the auditorium tech booth or a classroom. Thank you, John and Dan, for all you do!
