Cook This Tidbits uncovers some fascinating facts about cranberries, the tart, red berries that show up in vast quantities at stores this time of year. • October is National Cranberry Month. If you live in or near one of the states where the little red fruits are grown, you’ve probably seen signs for festivals and celebrations. • Cranberries are one of the few fruits that are actually native to North America. (Concord grapes and blueberries are as well.) Native Americans introduced the berries to the Pilgrims in the early colonies in the 1600s. Some tribes called them ibimi and sassamanash, meaning “bitter berry,” while others referred to them as atoqua, meaning “good fruit.” Colonists started calling them “crane-berry” because the plants resembled the neck, head and bill of a crane. The name was later shortened to cranberry. • Pilgrims quickly learned from Native Americans that cranberries had great health benefits. High levels of vitamin C in the fruit helped prevent scurvy, a disease that was prevalent with sailors. Native Americans made pemmicana, a healthy survival food, by mixing deer meat and mashed cranberries. • Cranberries were also used as a natural dye for rugs, blankets and clothing and in medicinal poultices for wounds. turn the page for more!

Top Tips When Moving With Pets(NC)—Moving to a new home can be stressful for everyone involved, including your pets. “We often see homeowners who are anxious about their pet’s adjustment to a new home,” says Yvonne Ratigan, vice president at Royal LePage Canada. “By planning ahead, you can ensure your pet is happy and safe in your new home,” Ratigan says, offering these tips to help things go smoothly.Visit the vet. Schedule a visit with your veterinarian for a check-up and ensure all vaccinations are up to date. Use this time to arrange for copies of your pet’s records, and ask for a recommendation for a veterinarian in your new location. If your journey is a long one, ask for advice on how to care for your pet during transportation.Research by-laws and pet licensing in your new area. What are the requirements concerning domestic animals in your new area? To find out, contact the local Humane Society or an animal shelter run by the municipality. Ask about licensing and by-laws concerning the responsibilities of pet owners. Also check into the availability of leash-free areas for dogs in your new community.Special considerations for rural areas. If the area you are moving to is a rural one, be sure to learn the rights of farmers when neighbouring pets venture onto their property. Often, farmers have special privileges when it comes to protecting their livestock. An unleashed pet, who ventures onto a farmer’s property, could be considered a threat.Transitioning your pet to your new home. Take your dog for several walks each day to help him become familiar with the new area. Avoid walking the dog immediately before you plan to leave the home for errands or work. Plan to be home for a period of time after those initial walks, so that the dog associates the new area with a positive outcome. Leaving immediately after your walk can increase anxiety. Cats on the other hand, should remain inside for several weeks until they become comfortable in the new home. Cats are known to run away to search for their old home, so safe containment indoors is paramount.More moving tips can be found online at

Since cranberries are dark red, how can there be “white cranberry juice drinks?”

The drinks are made from cranberries that are mature but are used before they have changed from white to their dark red color.

Vancouver Orphaned Kitten Rescue Association is a group of devoted animal lovers based in Vancouver that is dedicated to placing abandoned and orphaned kittens in secure, loving, indoor homes. They have rescued more than 1200 homeless cats this year, and currently have over four hundred cats and kittens in their care.

The three smaller girls are alternately perfect little ladies and wild hooligans - depending on the time of day. They are lap cats who only resist people’s attention when it interrupts their playtime. Blossom and sister Shisan are the most curious of the trio, and Blossom the braver of the two. Sachi is a quiet little girl who

likes nothing better than spending quiet - or rowdy - time with her foster sister Bianca. They are all fond of people, but a bit careful of children.

Bianca is a cat’s cat. She adores the three younger kittens and loves their mom, Sumi. She is from a feral litter, and is still a bit suspicious of people. She likes being petted, though, and goes into near ecstasy when the tummy rub is especially good. While she is gentle and good natured, she is still a bit timid, and might not be right for people with children. She would be perfect for someone with another cat. Not a lap cat yet, she probably will be soon.

relax. The food here is so meticulously prepared, so deliciously simple but refined, each course seems to be in competition to top the last. Rich veal tonnato, burrata cheese and prosciutto sprinkled with salt, gnocchi made minutes before and served in the most spectacular rabbit ragu… You’re going to flip your lid. And maybe spend the night in a food coma rolling around on your bedroom floor cursing the chef gods at La Quercia for making you behave like a gluttonous food whore. But it’s worth it. So, so worth it.

#1: Boneta www.boneta.caBoneta gets my top spot because a. I’m loyal and I’m there all the time, b. it’s always fantastic, and c. they give me free champagne every time I walk in the door. Situated in Gastown in a big, cavernous warehouse-like space, its menu is proudly displayed via a projector up on the wall above the open kitchen. It’s always changing, which is fun when you go there as often as I do, and the food never, ever disappoints. They do have some standards that never leave the menu, thankfully, like the smoked bison carpaccio with arugula, parmesan, and gorgeous little hard-boiled quail eggs, or the addictive poutine- crispy french fries dressed with cheese curds and drenched in veal gravy. Start with their “daily baked bread”,

#2: La Quercia www.laquercia.caLa Quercia is in a quiet part of Kitsilano, at the corner of Alma and West 4th. The restaurant itself is pretty quiet and reserved, too, and it’s small, so make a reservation. But man, oh man, is it good. This place is serious about Italian cooking, and the chefs mean business. Don’t even look at the menu– get the $43 five-course menu or, better yet, splurge on the $59 nine-course menu and sit back and

perfect loaves of warm and soft bread sprinkled with salt and served with lotsa butter. Try to contain yourself so you have room for their mains, which can be duck served two ways- roasted breast, and some in-house made sauteed duck sausage, or a really amazing piece of steelhead trout with a thyme sour cream pasta. Dessert’s out of control, too: sticky toffee pudding, or a chocolate mousse with corn (!) ice cream, or a plate of house-made petit-fours with some of the best salted caramels I’ve ever had, complete with cute lil’ white wrapper. Be sure to sample some of their amazing wines on their ever-changing list, compiled by Neil Ingram, sommelier extraordinaire, who has one of the best mustaches I’ve ever seen. Rumor has it Boneta’s moving to a new space in Blood Alley, so check their website for details. ”Boneta Loves You” is scrawled on their menu, and all I gotta say is, the feeling’s mutual. So there you have it. My favorite city and my favorite places. I hope you adore them as much as I do.XO

How did cranberry connect with turkey?

(NC)—Convenience had a lot to do with this classic coupling, as history reveals:

The settlers of North America in the 17th century depended on foods that were readily available along the Atlantic coast. One was the wild turkey in great abundance and another was thriving just under the surface of coastal bogs. Every fall, the extensive marshland of New England was alive with ripe-red berries, so the clever cooks of the day experimented with this available nutrition to serve up the tastiest combination of poultry and fruit – a meal that we’ve never forgotten.

“Apparently, the berry got its name because the flower and stem looked like the head of a crane,” says Sonia Derhak at ACH Food Company. “Over time, the name was shortened to ‘cran’ and the fruit of that flower became the ‘cranberry’.”

“Clever cooks today continue to experiment with creative ways to add the goodness and taste of cranberries to holiday meals,” Derhak continued. “Have you tried a cranberry glaze for both turkey and pork? It’s a topping that combines the tartness of cranberry with orange and soy sauce, plus a high quality corn syrup for sweetness and consistency.

“Corn, of course, is also indigenous to North America, a food that not only ranks high as a nationwide favourite, it also gives us a whole range of ingredients to flavour and perfect any family feast.■

Dear Busy: Re: Me First!I need some ideas here in a hurry. My son is sending my grandson to visit this season. I get that he needs to get away from his parents but I can’t fix something that took 17 years to get broken. He’s into absolutely nothing but gaming 24/7. The kids think I’ll be able to influence him to open a book or eat with a knife & fork. I don’t want somebody on my computer 24/7, drinking my Coke, trolling my seniors dating sites. Time’s a wastin’ and I’m tired of thinking about this.Signed: Grammy Gumboots

Hey Grammy:First, hide the booze and your stash and put airtight passwords on your computer. Then hire the kid a nannie …. Preferably a female college student working for early childhood education credits. Get them a big old mother of a TV from the Sally Anne, rent a used computer and some game consoles. Go to Costco and buy more Coke and lots of finger food. If you must try books, I recommend Sex for Dummies. He’ll keep turning the pages and something might stick to his brain as they flip by. Or …. Borrow bikes and pack their lunches in a roadmap. Rome wasn’t built in a day and the kid’s going to go down his own road regardless of everyone’s best intentions. Just keep him safe and send him home wiser.-Busy.
