October 21 is Reptile Awareness Day, and this week, Tidbits is digging into the details of several unusual species. • In order to be classified as a reptile, an animal must have five characteristics. It must have a backbone, be covered with scales, breathe with lungs, be cold-blooded, and lay eggs (although a few reptiles give birth to live young). Their skin has no hair or oil-producing follicles. Most reptiles are carnivores, with a very few herbivore types. There are four basic groups of reptiles: snakes and lizards, crocodiles and alligators, turtles and tortoises, and two species of tuatara. • Tuatara are found only in New Zealand, and although they resemble lizards, they are their own species. This curious creature measures about 30 inches (80 cm) long, weighs 3 lbs. (1.3 kg), and has a spiny crest along its back. If caught by its tail by a predator, it has the ability to break off its tail and regenerate a new one. A tuatara will be between 10 and 20 years old before it is mature enough to reproduce. One record-breaking 111-year-old male reproduced for the first time with an 80-year-old female. Although the average lifespan is about 60 years, some believe tuatara could live up to 200 years in captivity. • The frilled-neck lizard makes its home in Australia. It takes its name from the large pleated skin flap around its neck. Normally the frill stays folded against the lizard’s body, but when the lizard feels threatened, it unfurls its bright orange and red frill, opens its mouth wide, exposing a bright yellow interior, and hisses. The lizard also displays this behavior during courtship. When the frill is folded against the body, this lizard is a non-descript brown or gray with splotches of darker color, giving it the appearance of tree bark, enabling it blend in and hide from predators. It’s a large lizard, with the average adult reaching a length of about 3 feet (0.9 m). • The Chinese water dragon, native to the rainforests of Thailand, Indochina, and China, is a colorful lizard that can grow up to a length of 3.3 feet (1 m). Although some are green, others are purple with an orange stomach and diagonal stripes of turquoise on the body. Their throats might be blue, purple, or peach, with either a solid color or with stripes. This carnivorous reptile likes to dine on mice, goldfish, quail chicks, and earthworms. In captivity, a Chinese water dragon might live to the age of 20. • A gecko lizard’s long toes have tiny adhesive pads that are forked at the ends, which enable them to cling to any surface, includingceilings, glass, and other smooth vertical surfaces. The flying gecko, found only in southeast Asia, has an intricate system of membrane flaps along its side, tail, and feet. Although they don’t truly fly, they can glide from tree to tree, using their webbed feet and flaps to generate lift. This little lizard, about 7 inches (17.8 cm) long, can “fly” up to 200 feet (60 m). • There are nearly 180 different species of chameleons, members of the iguana order, that are found primarily in Africa, with many species on the island of Madagascar. A few others are native to India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They don’t live naturally anywhere in North or South America, and if any are found on those continents, they’re turn to page 3 for more! UNUSUAL PLANTS:CHERRY BLOSSOMS

In 1912, Japan gifted the United States with 3,020 cherry blossom trees. This week, Tidbits focuses on these beautiful trees’ characteristics and history. • Japan’sgiftin1912weren’tthefirstcherryblossom

trees to hit the North American continent. In 1906, Dr. DavidFairchild,anofficialwiththeU.S.DepartmentofAgriculture, imported 100 flowering cherry treesfrom a Japanese nursery and planted them on his own property in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After two years of testing the trees’ hardiness in the area, Fairchild ordered 300 more trees, which were given to the schools in the District of Columbia to plant in their yards to honor Arbor Day..

• In1909,treeswereplantedalongthePotomacRiverbeginning at the Lincoln Memorial. The following year, the City of Tokyo donated 2,000 cherry trees to beplantedalongtheRiver. However, uponthetrees’arrival, it was discovered they were infested with insects and disease, and all the trees were burned. The 1912 gift was a replacement for the diseased trees.

• In the Spring of 1912, First Lady Helen Taft andthe wife of the Japanese Ambassador, Viscountess Chinda, planted two cherry trees on the northern bank inWashington,D.C.’sEastPotomacpark, trees thatstill stand in their original site.

• Washington, D.C.’s first annual Cherry BlossomFestival was held in 1935, coinciding with the trees’ early spring full bloom. There are now 11 different varietiesofcherryblossomtreesinthePark.

• In 1965, Japan donated another 3,800 trees, thefirst twoagainplantedbytheFirstLady,LadyBirdJohnson, and the wife of the Japanese ambassador, RyujiTakeuchi.

Q.We live in Cabot and planted two Sugar

Maple trees several years ago. They have done fine until now. Last week the leaves of one of them suddenly turned brown and the tree died. This week the other one did the same thing. There was no warning of any kind. They did not seem to be in any distress before they died. They are planted in full sun and we water them regularly. Any idea what could have caused this?

A.When the leaves turned brown did they drop

or remain attached to the tree? If they defoliated early they may still be alive and will come back next spring. Did you spray anything in the yard for weeds, diseases, and insects? Any fertilization? When they began growing this spring

did they have a full set of leaves? One thing to look for is any toothpick like protrusions on the trunk of the tree which could be caused by ambrosia beetles which can kill otherwise seemingly healthy trees. Serious attacks that result in tree death usually occur during the leafing-out stage, but we can have more than one generation of them per year. Infested wood is distinctly dis colored and may have a foul odor.

Q.I have lived in the same home for 20 years. On

the southeast (front) corner, I have managed to kill three dogwoods and now a serviceberry. The spot caps off a row of 20 year old azaleas across the front of the house. The spot gets hot bright afternoon sun and sits in a wet spot from rain

Is There a Cure for Keloids?

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there a cure for keloids? My husband is 56 and has several keloids on his body, but there is one on his chest that has got-ten considerably larger over the years and causes the most problems. He has experienced pain and discomfort, and it also bleeds at times. My husband would prefer not to have surgery. He was born with a keloid on his ear. At a very young age it was operated on, and it returned larger in size. He has tried numerous types of remedies, but none has prevented the keloid from growing or bleeding. — J.B.

ANSWER: A keloid (from a Greek word meaning “tumor-like”) is a com-plication of scar tissue. In some people, when the skin heals from a cut or a burn, the healing cells keep growing, creating a variably sized, disfiguring, some-times painful lesion called a keloid.

The best treatment in people who are predisposed to keloids is to avoid them by avoiding any unnecessary surgery (including ear and other body pierc-ings). Once a keloid has formed, there are several possible treatments. Unfor-tunately, the longer a keloid has been there, the harder it is to treat.

I have seen great results from sili-cone gel sheeting. This is particularly effective when used immediately after surgery, but may have some effective-ness on your husband’s chest keloid. Another potentially effective treat-ment is injection of steroids, which help flatten and shrink keloids up to 75 percent of the time.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a fall on ice and suffered a severe concus-sion. I was unconscious for several minutes. At the hospital, I had a CT scan, but there was no damage. Two months later, I had an episode where I became disoriented and the room was spinning. I was taken to the hospital, given Antivert with-out success and kept overnight. A physical therapist came the next day, did some vestibular rehab that helped some, and I continued it at home as needed. The episodes are getting worse, and neither the Anti-vert nor the exercises are helping. Could this be due to the fall? My ENT says no. — G.M.

ANSWER: You clearly have vertigo, but whether it is due to the fall isn’t clear. Certainly, people with post-concussion syndrome get dizziness and vertigo, but in most cases I have seen, it starts soon after the trauma: Two months is longer than I have seen. Headaches also are common in postconcussion syndrome, but their absence doesn’t mean your vertigo is NOT due to the fall.

Meclizine (Antivert) is an antihis-tamine commonly used for vertigo; however, prolonged use (more than a few days) prevents the brain from adapting to the changes in the balance system that caused the vertigo. Thus, it’s concerning that you may still be taking it. I have seen many people tak-ing meclizine long term and having persistent vertigo.

Vestibular rehab is the best treatment we have for vertigo. If it’s not work-ing, it may be time to re-evaluate and make sure there isn’t another cause for the vertigo.

October 16, 2017 • It was German dramatist, poet, phi-

losopher and statesman Johann Wolf-gang von Goethe who made the fol-lowing sage observation: “Too many parents make life hard for their chil-dren by trying, too zealously, to make it easy for them.”

• At one time in Ireland, a tradition-al Halloween activity was predicting future romance. It was one of the few times of the year when young men and women could mingle, and fortune-tell-ing games to predict who they would marry were popular.

• Those who are experiencing mon-ey-related relationship issues might be interested to note the results of a survey conducted by TD Ameritrade. When asked who manages the house-hold budget, 87 percent of women said they did, while 81 percent of men claimed that responsibility.

• Until Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic psychological horror film “Psycho” premiered in 1960, no American film had ever shown a toilet being flushed.

• Buick is one of the oldest automo-bile brands in the world, so you might expect that the company’s founder did pretty well for himself. Unfortunately for David Dunbar Buick, who incorpo-rated the company in 1903, that wasn’t the case. In less than a year, the com-pany was sold. Buick stayed on as a manager and worked on engine devel-opment, but only for two more years. When he left his namesake company in 1906, he sold his one remaining share of Buick for $100,000. That was a rather hefty sum at the time, but he lost it all in a series of unsuccessful ventures. At the time of his death in early 1929, he was virtually penniless.

• It’s been reported that a shaved guinea pig bears a remarkable resem-blance to a tiny hippopotamus.

Hurricane Pets Need HomesIf you've considered getting a pet, this might be the perfect time to adopt one. A side effect of all the hurricanes we've had is the number of animal shelters that are completely filled. Either the owners can't be found or the families have no homes to go back to and are living in shelters that won't allow pets. In hurricane-hit areas, adoptions have plunged because people have so much to do just to take care of their families.

Across the country, other shelters have taken up the cause and have run caravans (even planes) to bring rescued animals to areas that weren't hit by hurricanes.

Many shelters have lowered adoption fees so more animals can find homes. When adopted, all the animals will have been through quarantine and given shots and exams.

What do you get out of it if you adopt a pet? The short list is more social interaction, less stress, lower blood pressure, increased physical exercise and structure to your days. Add to that the gratitude of an animal that's been through crisis and is now in a loving, forever home.

If it's not possible for you to adopt a pet, consider being part of the welcoming committee when the animals arrive. They'll be anxious from the long ride, eager to move around. They'll need lots of TLC to calm down, and baths and soothing words. The shelter might need extra toys, leashes, food and blankets. Perhaps you can volunteer to be a collection point for those items.

Or you could foster an animal on a short-term basis. Who knows ... it's possible that in opening your home and heart to a homeless cat or dog that you'll decide to make the arrangement permanent.

the offspring of escaped pets from their native habitat. Although we might think that chameleons can change color to match their surroundings, what really happens is that they live in an environment that matches their normal color. They don’t change to whatever color they are sitting on. However, the skin does change color when they are frightened, angry, or stressed, or as a reaction to changes in light, temperature, or humidity. A male can change color to make himself more attractive to a female, and that female can use her color to accept or reject his advances. Her color can also reveal a pregnancy. In addition to changing color, chameleons have another exclusive ability no other animals have. Their eyes move independently of each other, and can look in two different directions at the same time, giving them a full 360-degree view. The smallest chameleon in the world is just half an inch (16 mm) long, tiny enough to sit on the head of a match.

•There are more than 3,000species of snakes worldwide, but the good news is that only about 375 are venomous. Of those, about 250 can kill their prey with one bite. When they strike, they have nearly a 100% success rate. However, most species are actually helpful since they keep the rodent population under control.

REPTILES (Cont. froM PaGe 1):

• The rarest snake is the St.Lucia Racer, an endangered snake that lives only on the tiny uninhabited Caribbean island of Maria Major. Once declared extinct, 11 of the small non-venomous reptiles were discovered in 2012. Anywhere from 18 to 100 are believed to be in existence.

•Rattlers have heat-sensingpits on the sides of their head between the nostril and eye. These enable them to detect warm-blooded prey, (their favorites are rodents and lizards), and they can detect differences in temperature to a fraction of a degree. When the rattlesnake shakes its rattles, it’s trying to warn or scare away predators. Every time the snake sheds its skin, another ring is added to its rattles. Beware, because even though young rattlesnakes don’t yet have rattles, they are just as dangerous as the adults.

• A turtle’s shell, which ismadeup of 60 different bones, has two parts, the upper section, called the carapace, and a lower part, known as the pastron. The two parts are joined together by a bony ridge, and covered with plates that offer strength and protection.

•The African spurred tortoiseis also known as the sulcata tortoise, the third-largest species of tortoise in the world. This unusual reptile lives in the southern edge of the Saharadesert and reaches a length of 33 inches (83 cm) and a weight of more than 230 lbs. (105 kg). In an attempt to reach levels of higher moisture than the arid desert provides, the tortoise engages in aestivation, a process of excavating 30-inch-deep (76 cm) burrows in the ground, connecting to an underground tunnel system extending more than 10 feet (3.05 m). Here the tortoise spends the hottest part of the day. Because the sulcata has a pleasant disposition, it is popular as a pet, and can live more than 50 years in captivity.

You'll also find posters, mugs, totes, signs and more on the website shopping page. With the holidays looming, consider buying a half dozen or more calendars and delivering them to a ward at your nearest VA hospital. (Hook up with a recreation therapist or voluntary services at the hospital.) Wear a Santa hat. Spend some time there talking to the patients, especially the older ones who either served or were children during World War II. Ask questions about those years. Get them talking.

It was with great irritation that I learned about a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital cancelling a previously scheduled visit from a group called Pin-Ups for Vets, without (apparently) doing its homework. After a hue and cry on the hospital's website, it finally said yes, and the visit was on again.Pin-Ups for Vets, a kitchen-table startup that has been quite successful in supporting veterans, was created in honor of a grandfather who served during World War II. Since 2007, the group has visited more than 60 military hospitals and 20 military bases (some overseas), and have been welcomed at each one. They donate funds for veteran

programs, deliver care packages, support homeless veterans and military wives, make hospital visits (wearing their vintage dresses) and chat with the veterans, and that's just a partial list.At each visit they also hand out nostalgia calendars with 1940s pin-up girl themes. The calendars are extremely well-done. There are images of lovely ladies wearing retro dresses, high heels and hairstyles of that era, posing with great vintage vehicles (planes, trucks, tractors) -- all appropriate images. The clincher for me: Nearly all the women in the calendar are themselves military veterans.Check for yourself at www.

Hollywood DecoFifties furniture is very popular with

vintage collectors today, but some ear-lier Art Deco designs from the 1930s are not in demand. Look at old mov-ies on television to study some of the stranger pieces. The look is sometimes called “Hollywood Deco” because the extravagant rooms with huge round mirrors and sofas were exaggerations of the modern furniture used in aver-age homes.

An unfamiliar cabinet was sold recently at a Garth’s auction. It was a flat, round cabinet on a base. When placed against a wall, it showed all of the 51-inch diameter of the cabinet and the glass doors and shelves wait-ing to display a collection. The plain solid base stretched beyond the round-ed sides to give safe support for the top-heavy design. This type of cabinet was made in the 1930s, but most for sale today were made in England, not the U.S. Most have no maker’s name and the wood choice suggests it was not expensive when new. Some were oak or even mahogany, but many were made of laminate with grain painting.

A cabinet like this sold at a Midwest-ern auction in 2016 for $450. A selec-tion of similar round modernist curio

cabinets found online had asking pric-es as high as $2,000, but most of these are in English shops and prices were cut to less than $500.

Q: I’d like some information about a pitcher and wash-

bowl made by Edward Clarke. It’s marked on the bottom with two touching shields. The words “Edward Clarke, Tunstall, Trade Mark, Stone China” are above the shields and “Stone China” below.

A: Edward Clarke made earth-enware and white ironstone at

Phoenix Works in Tunstall, England, from about 1865 to 1877. That’s when your pitcher and washbowl were made. They probably were part of a commode set that included a soap dish, chamber pot and other items. Before there was indoor plumbing, a commode set or chamber set was kept in the bedroom and emptied each morning.

Q: I came across an old R.C. Allen 10 Key Calculator Mod-

A: Ralph C. Allen founded his company in Grand Rapids,

Michigan, in 1932. It also manufac-tured and distributed cash registers and typewriters. Your calculator was made in 1948 and originally sold for $397. Old calculators are not very useful and not popular collectibles, so they are very hard, if not impossible, to sell.

PICKS OF THE WEEKGirls Trip (R) — When Dina (Regi-

na Hall), a motivational writer on the verge of next-level success, books a speaking engagement in the Big Easy, it seems like the right time for her and her college gal pals to redis-cover their friendships and blow off a little steam at the Essence Festival. But after bestie Sasha (Queen Latifah) gets an incriminating photo of Dina’s husband, the only thing these women are dis-covering is their wild side — and what a ride. Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish (in an exceptional breakout performance) round out the group, and it’s crude and raunchy and absolutely what you need right now. This movie is chockablock with hot guys and musician cam-eos, but it’s the bonds of sis-terhood running deep that makes this a ladies’ adventure done right.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (PG-13) — Tom Holland follows up his adorable debut as Spider-Man (intro-duced in “Captain America: Civil War”) with a solo turn in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” the newest feather in the hat of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Under the tutelage of Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), the young buck must hone his super-hero craft and prepare to face a new threat in villain Vulture (Michael Kea-ton). This reboot has everything you’re looking for: witty banter, exciting action, death-defying special effects and a super-cute new Spidey in Hol-land, who maintains the innocence, cockiness and high-school angst of our hero without being overly sappy or beating you over the head with a mer-chandise message. You’ll be caught in the web of fun from start to finish.

Shot Caller (R) — Nikolaj

Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”) stars as Jacob Harlan, a studious stock-broker who is sent to prison after a DUI accident takes the life of his best friend. He loses his home and family and is forced to confront what it will take to survive in prison. His subse-quent transformation from a clean-cut, wide-eyed vanilla pudding of a man to a hardened, tattooed killer called “Money” is unnerving. After his debt to society is paid, he must then begin to repay his debt to the prison society that kept him alive, even as he longs to return to the life he once led. This rich, unsettling study of the penal system and its long-reaching effects comes from director Ric Roman Waugh.

Landline (R) — Fidelity, family and the 1990s figure heavily in this dramedy by director Gillian Robes-pierre (“Obvious Child”) set in 1995 Manhattan. Twenty-something Dana (Jenny Slate) and teenage sister Ali (Abby Quinn) uncover clues that their father (John Turturro) is having an affair. Their attempt to search for answers without arousing the suspi-cion of their mother (Edie Falco) leads them through a meandering dissection of family relationships and the signif-icance of sex and love, all the while relying heavily on the nostalgia of pre-social media-era conventions of payphones, floppy disks, “Must See TV” and more.

Small Diet Changes Reap Big Results

When it comes to our daily meal routine, change sometimes can be challenging. Studies have shown that it takes between two to eight months to form a new habit. You can create an eating style “habit” that can improve your health now and in the future by making small changes over time, such as eliminating sugary drinks and high-sodium foods.

Consider making healthy changes that reflect your personal preferenc-es, culture and traditions. Think of each change as a “win” as you build positive habits and find solutions that reflect your new healthy eating style. Use the tips below courtesy of My Plate (www.choosemyplate.gov/start-small-changes) to find little victories that work for you!Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Veggies:

• Focus on whole fruits more often than drinking 100 percent juice.

• Snack on fresh, frozen, canned or dried fruits instead of cookies, brown-ies or other sugar-sweetened treats.

• Offer whole fruits without saturated fat, sodium or added sugars as dessert.

• Vary your vegetables to include green, red and orange choices.

• Add fresh, frozen or canned vegeta-bles to salads, side dishes and recipes.

• Prepare your vegetables without sauces, gravies or glazes to lower the amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugars.Make Half Your Grains Whole Grains:

• Choose whole-grain foods more often than refined grains. Make at least half the amount of grains you eat each day whole grains.

• Find high-fiber, whole-grain foods by reading the nutrition facts label and ingredients list.

• Some common whole grains include oatmeal, whole-wheat flour and popcorn.Move to Low Fat and Fat-Free Dairy:

• Choose low-fat or fat-free milk and yogurt.

• Buy low-fat or fat-free cheese more often than regular cheese.

• Regular cream cheese, butter and cream are not in the dairy food group because they have little or no calcium. They also are high in saturated fat.Vary Your Protein Routine:

• Mix up your protein foods to include seafood, beans, nuts, seeds, soy, eggs, lean meats and poultry.

• Select seafood twice a week, including fish and shellfish.

• Add beans or peas, unsalted nuts and seeds, and soy in main dishes and snacks.

When planning your daily meals, try healthy new ways to prepare fam-ily favorites. This recipe for Greek pork chops with mixed veggie rice incorporates fresh fruit and juices into savory dishes and mixes grains and vegetables.

GREEK PORK CHOPS WITH VEGGIE RICE

1 pound pork cutlets (or 4 boneless pork chops) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/2 cup orange juice 2 teaspoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 cloves garlic (peeled and minced) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper 4 (1/4-inch-thick) orange slices

1. Make a marinade for the pork by combining 1 tablespoon of the oil, the orange juice, soy sauce, oregano and garlic in a glass bowl or re-seal-able plastic bag and mix well. Add pork chops. Cover bowl, if using, and

refrigerate the pork chops for at least 4 hours or overnight.

2. Remove pork chops from mari-nade; discard marinade. Sprinkle pork chops with salt and pepper.

3. Place a large skillet on the stove over high heat. When hot, add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Add the pork chops to the pan, waiting about 30 seconds between each addition.

4. Cook about 3 minutes on each side until crispy. Set pork chops aside on a plate. Add the orange slices to the pan and cook on each side about 30-seconds. Serve the pork chops over a bed of the Mixed Veggie Rice and top with the orange slices. Serves 4.

MIXED VEGGIE RICEIf using leftover, already cooked

vegetables, add them to the hot, cooked rice immediately, cover and let them come up to temperature for 3 to 5 minutes before serving. 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice 1/2 onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 cups water (or 1 cup water and 1 cup low-sodium chick- en or vegetable broth) 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables or 2 cups fresh, diced vegetables.

1. In a large saucepan over medi-um-high heat, add the oil. Add in the rice, onion, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes to toast the rice.

2. Pour in the water and/or the broth. Stir and bring the rice to a boil. Add the vegetables; return to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and cover pot with tight-fitting lid. Do not remove the lid during the cooking process!

3. After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for another 5 minutes to steam. Fluff rice and vegetables with a fork and serve immediately. Makes 4 to 6 servings

Kiss My GlassThe game has changed — all of

them — and it’s now up to ownership to understand the risks that fans are now being subjected to for no appar-ent reason.

When slap shots started to dent people’s heads in the NHL, things like helmets and plexiglass came into vogue. It took a few deaths before baseball moved to wearing helmets at bat. Football is struggling to figure out how to protect its players, but the NBA’s plexiglass backboards have worked pretty well insofar as not obstructing a fan’s view or sending a splinter into someone’s arm.

But we have a problem in Major League Baseball. Times have changed, and the danger that modern athletes wielding supercharged bats at superfast balls is literally ruining lives. A Cubs fan is suing because he took a foul off his eyeball, blinding him and subjecting him to a life of migraines. A little girl was smashed in the face at a Yankees game during the pennant race. Busted bats are stabbing people in the stands. Hey, baseball, this has got to stop.

The game has fundamentally changed. Baseball is now a power game where seemingly everybody is swinging maple bats and pitchers are blowing 100 mph-plus fastballs with astonishing regularity. This was nev-er the case before. Fans used to cheer bunts. Slow balls covered in tobacco spit were splattering off of catch-er’s gloves. There wasn’t even a net

behind home plate. It was, literally a different ballgame.

Then in the 1980s, strikeout king Nolan Ryan was clocked throw-ing faster than anyone ever before by judges at the Guinness Book of World Records. By the ‘90s, he was still throwing 100 mph on the mound as pitchers like Greg Maddux posted ERAs that rivaled Cy Young’s. An anomaly would be a guy like Mark Wohlers, Kyle Farnsworth and Nef-tali Perez ... guys who could throw 100 mph with regularity but had a hard time keeping the ball over the plate and in the park.

Today, that’s not the case. Seem-ingly everyone and their little brother throws 100-plus mph. Take Luis Sev-erino for the Yankees, throwing 103-mph fastballs after 130 pitches in the playoffs this season, only to give way to relievers who also threw 100-plus mph fastballs. A deflection is enough to maim anyone in the stands for life.

Yet baseball, soooo open to change (sarcasm), can’t seem to figure out how to protect fans. A guy is going blind, babies are getting smashed to the face, but baseball is worried that netting will “ruin the view.” Here’s a clue for you owners: plexiglass. The NHL figured that out decades ago. Guess what? That won’t ruin the view, and it will solve your problems and probably save lives as players get bigger and stronger each passing year.

When Todd Frazier ripped that foul ball with an exit velocity of some-thing like 108 mph into a toddler’s face, baseball players literally put their hands to their mouth, took a knee and cried. Do I even need to say it? There’s no cyring in baseball. Fix it before someone fixes it for you in a court of law.

runoff and the lay of the yard. I would like a small ornamental tree for this spot. Any advice? I’ve thought of a crab apple and even a columnar English oak. The oak is not ornamental but there is a nice one on the Hendrix campus in a somewhat similar spot.

A.While sunlight might have been the issue with the

dogwoods, the serviceberry should have done fine. I don’t think it is the intense sun, but the poor drainage. I would not attempt a crabapple or oak in wet feet.

Redbuds are more tolerant of wet feet and might be a better option, but solving the drainage issue or elevating the planting can help.

Q.I would very much appreciate your opinion on the following.

A family who has plots next to my family plots at a local cemetery wants to plant a couple of dogwood trees between the families’ plots. I have to agree to this before they can do this .A representative of the cemetery advises against it, as he is afraid the roots will encroach on the markers and cause problems down the road. I hate to say no,

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good time to speak out on a difficult situation. You’re known for your hon-esty, so people will listen and, perhaps, begin to make long-needed changes.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s sharp business sense alerts you to question the positions of those trying to push the Bull into a deal. Demand to see proof of what they profess.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your quick thinking helps you get out of a troubling situation that suddenly was thrust upon you. Later on, you can expect to learn more about why it hap-pened.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel you’ve dotted all your i’s and crossed all your t’s regarding that upcoming deal. But there might be some facts you’ve ignored. Check again.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Time for the Lion to be more physically active. It will help shake off any lingering Leonine lethargy and restore your energy levels, so you’ll be prepared for what lies ahead.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Helping those in need at this time is laudable. But don’t ignore your own needs, especially where it concerns your health. A medical checkup is a wise move.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good news: Your outspoken views about a controversial on-the-job situ-ation could find unexpectedly strong support from a most unlikely work-place faction.

SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-ber 21) You might have to draw on your reservoir of spiritual strength to help someone special through a diffi-cult time. Your loving attitude makes all the difference.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your proven leader-ship qualities make you the perfect person to take on an important work-place task.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although some compro-mise might need to be reached regard-ing your stand on an important issue, you’ll still be able to get the most cru-cial points across.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to Feb-ruary 18) A chance to make a career change carries both positive and uncertain possibilities. Best advice: Check it out thoroughly and don’t be rushed into a decision.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re still a staunch supporter of one side of an important issue. But be pre-pared to deal with new information that could cause you to question your current stand.

BORN THIS WEEK: You’re per-ceptive and quick to act when you sense that someone needs help. You are an always-dependable friend.

but I lean toward taking the advice of the cemetery representative.

A.First question is: is there water available for the dogwoods,

and is there a little shade? Dogwoods are shallow-rooted trees that prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. If they are going to be totally out in the open and left to fend for themselves, they won’t survive. If they have a good location and care, they would be beautiful small trees, and would not typically cause problems uprooting things.

GOES GREEN

Getting ready to put up decorative lights for Halloween and Christmas? Energy efficient LED lights consume far less electricity than incandescent bulbs and are much safer than incandescent because they emit very little heat, reducing the risk of combustion. They’re also moreresistant to breakage and last much longer.

The devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences out on the range. Three weeks later, a lizard walked up to him carrying the Bible in its mouth. The cowboy couldn’t believe his eyes.

He took the precious book out of the lizard’s mouth, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, “It’s a miracle!” “Not really,” said the lizard. “Your name is

• The smallest turtle is the 4-inch (101 cm) Bog Turtle. The largest, the Leatherback Sea Turtle, averages about 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 m) in length, with a weight of 1,100 lbs. (500 kg). However, the largest Leatherback ever recorded was almost 10 feet (3.05 m) long and weighed 2,019 lbs. (916 kg). For all its immense size, the Leatherback has very delicate jaws that are easily damaged by anything other than soft-bodied animals. Their diet is made up almost entirely of jellyfish, which are composed mostly of water and are a poor source of nutrients.

• North America’s biggest freshwater turtle is the alligator snapping turtle, a reptile that is 2.5 feet (0.76 m) long and weighs 200 lbs. (90.7 kg). Its powerful jaws, sharply-hooked beak, and powerful bearlike claws make this creature a formidable predator for fish, frogs, snakes, clams, crayfish, and smaller turtles. A remarkable characteristic makes its hunting easier – its tongue has an appendage that, when wriggled, closely resembles a worm, fooling its prey into swimming directly into range of the snapping turtle.

• If you’re listening to a turtle or tortoise, you’ll hear some interesting noises. Generally, males grunt, while females hiss. But South America’s red-footed tortoise clucks like a chicken, while male Travancore tortoises of southeast Asia seeking a mate make a high-pitched whining sound much like an electric motor. Central America’s giant musk turtle yelps like a dog when it is startled or under attack.

• Early Spanish explorers and settlers in Florida gave the alligator its name. This scaly reptile takes its name from the Spanish word largarto, meaning “the lizard.” The menacing-looking mouth of an American alligator holds between 74 and 80 teeth at a time, but it might go through 2,000 to 3,000 teeth over its lifetime. Although they seem to have a reputation for attacking humans, alligators are actually quite solitary and very rarely do they go after humans, usually only when provoked

or when protecting their young. Their diet consists of fish, turtles, snakes, birds, and small mammals. Occasionally they eat other alligators. An alligator’s jaws can clamp shut with enough force to break a person’s arm. But the muscles that open its mouth are very weak, so much so that a man can hold a full-grown alligator’s mouth open with one hand. And although they move very quickly through water, alligators are slow-moving on land.

• Although alligators and crocodiles belong to the same order, Crocodilia, there are distinct differences in their appearance and habitat. Crocodiles have long, narrow, V-shaped snouts, while alligators’ snouts are wider and U-shaped. This is related to the diet of each, with the alligator having more crushing power to capture prey such as turtles. The narrower snout of the croc is better suited for fish and small mammals. The color of a crocodile is an olive brown shade, while an alligator is darker, almost black in color. Their environments differ as well. Alligators dwell in fresh water, such as ponds, rivers, wetlands, lakes, and swamps, while crocs make their home in salt water.

The Japanese call the cherry blossoms “sakura.” The trees belong to the rose family, with the average tree about 25 feet (7.62 m) tall. With special care, they can reach upwards of 50 feet (15.2 m), with a 40-foot-wide (12.2 m) canopy. It’s primarily Yoshinos that line D.C.’s National Mall and the Potomac waterfront.

• The date for the peak blossoming in Washington, D.C. is around April 4. The blooming period lasts about two weeks.

• Cherry blossoms and leaves are frequently used as food ingredients in Japan. Blossoms are pickled in salt and vinegar and used in a sweet bun called anpan. Salt-pickled blossoms are also boiled in water, a beverage called sakurayu, served at festive events

Q: Please give me some scoop on “The X-Files.” The wait is kill-

ing me! — Valerie B., Toledo, Ohio

A: You and me both, Valerie. Well, we learned some more info

about the upcoming 11th season of the what’s-old-is-new-again hit alien/sci-fi series, which premieres on Fox in Janu-ary. First of all, remember that episode from the first go-round that creeped out everyone, “Home”? (Look it up if you don’t, because I can’t stomach rehash-ing it here.) Well, the actress who played the under-the-bed mom in that episode will be featured as four differ-ent characters (two of which are male) in an episode this next season. Also, as I mentioned before, this 10-episode season will consist of eight stand-alone mysteries and two mythology install-ments. We will get an episode that deals with the backstory of the Ciga-rette Smoking Man (played by William B. Davis), as well as one that delves into the life of Mitch Pileggi’s Skinner, who also will be featured more heavily this season. The question on everyone minds is where is William — Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully’s (Gil-lian Anderson) son — and does he have plans to destroy mankind? The truth is out there ... come January.

Q: I’ve been waiting and wait-ing for news about “Psych.”

I heard a while ago that they were bringing it back, but since then, crickets. — Elly W., via email

A: The cast of “Psych” will be back — for a reunion holiday movie.

As series star Dule Hill announced via video at the New York Comic Con, the much-anticipated movie will premiere Dec. 7 on USA Network. “Psych: The Movie” reunites the cast of the origi-nal series, and also welcomes aboard newcomer John Cena. Fans at Comic Con got to preview the first 20 minutes of the movie at the “Psych” panel, and they were not disappointed by the tease.

Q: I’ve been binge-watch-ing “Girlfriends’ Guide to

Divorce” on Netflix, and I love the actor who plays badass pastry chef Scott. Can you tell me more about him and where else I can see him? — Gina T., via email

A: Forty-year-old British actor Will Kemp had his breakout role in

“Van Helsing,” with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale back in 2004, and has been working steadily ever since. The actor, who also is a dancer, co-starred in “Step Up 2: The Streets” and Lifetime’s “Petals on the Wind,” both roles showcasing his classical dancing training. Will also played Hen-ry Stuart, Lord Darnley in the CW’s historical-fiction series “Reign,” which wrapped up its fourth and final season this summer.

Next up, he stars with my favorite kickass actress Maggie Q (have you seen her in “Designated Survivor”?) in the feature film “Slumber,” a supernat-ural thriller. The film centers on a sleep doctor (played by Maggie) who tries to protect a family from a demon that feeds on people in their nightmares. Catch it in theaters starting Dec. 1.

HOLLYWOOD — “Titanic” pro-ducer James Cameron, creator of the original “Terminator” franchise, says he’ll produce a new three-arc “Ter-minator” film, to be released in July 2019, when the original rights (which he sold after the first three films) revert back to him. Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger and Linda Hamilton (Camer-on’s ex-wife) have agreed to return to re-create their original roles. Cam-eron further commented, “People ask me ‘Will machines ever win against humanity?’” I say, “Look at people on their phones, the machines have already won!”

Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest film, “Stron-ger,” in which he plays Boston Mar-athon victim David Gordon Green, has received excellent reviews (Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 95 percent rating, while Metacritic scored it 76 out of 100 from 38 critics). But the film couldn’t find its audience in its first week, tak-ing in only $1.7 million to offset its $30 million cost. Only word of mouth can save it now. Jake will try again with “Wildlife,” opposite Carey Mulligan, and the dark Western comedy “The Sisters Brothers,” with John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix and Riz Ahmed.

Charlize Theron’s film “Atom-ic Blonde” also cost $30 million but grossed $95 million, while her “The Fate of the Furious” cost $250 million and grossed $1.2 billion. She’s pro-ducing her next two films: the action/drama “Gringo,” with David Oyelowo and Joel Edgerton, due March 9; and the comedy/drama “Tully,” written by Diablo Cody and co-starring Ron Livingston, coming April 20.

***Are we ever truly “Gone with the

Wind”? Take, for instance, Vivian Leigh, who won an Oscar in 1939 for playing Scarlett O’Hara in the clas-sic Civil War film. She was in Holly-wood keeping an eye on her partner, Laurence Olivier, while he was at

MGM making “Wuthering Heights” with Merle Oberon. She won a sec-ond Oscar for playing Blanche Dubois in Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951). Vivian Leigh died July 8, 1967, at the age of 53, from tuberculosis, and her grandchildren, who have waited 50 years to auction off her personal effects, at Southerby’s in London, say they did it to ensure her memory lives on.

Some 1,400 bidders from 52 coun-tries came to own a piece of her past. A gold ring, given to her by former husband Laurence Olivier, to whom she was married from 1940-1960, sold for $50,000. The size M 1/2 ring bore the inscription “Laurence Olivi-er Vivian Eternally.” A personal copy of “Gone with the Wind,” given to her and autographed by the author, Mar-garet Mitchell, sold for $67,000. An original painting, painted and given to her by Sir Winston Churchill, sold for $855,075. In all, the auction raised more than $3 million to ensure her grandchildren live on ... in style!

Playing With PairsLet’s pair up, everybody! Sounds

like we might be on a basketball court doing drills. Or maybe lining up for recess. Remember second grade? Lots of things we do and use every day such as clothing and accessories come in pairs, and kids become aware of the combinations at a very young age. Even 3- and 4-year-olds like to help sort socks.

As children grow, they become more skillful at distin-guishing things that are alike and different. No wonder that matching games like Old Maid, Concentration and dominoes are favorites from generation to generation.

Here are a pair of activities for adults and kids who enjoy matching things up. First find a partner, because in both activities you will play in pairs.DRAWING IN PAIRS

Each member of the pair will need some paper and a marker or pencil. Sitting back to back, one person draws a simple object, such as a car, house or baseball glove, and gives his or her partner directions on how to draw the same thing. The goal of the activity is to provide enough explanation (with-out saying what the object is) so that when you’re done, you’ll have a pair of drawings that might be identical, very similar or, in some cases, completely different, even with the same shapes or

designs within them. When one person is done, switch roles, with the other partner drawing a new picture and giv-ing directions. Compare results.SCAVENGER HUNT

Start by gathering items that come in pairs, such as mittens, socks, gloves, shoes, earrings and cufflinks. All play-ers sit on the floor in a circle. Place all items in the middle of the circle. An adult or older child hides one mem-ber of each pair of objects in rooms throughout the house. Work in pairs to hunt for the objects. As one is found, bring it to the circle and match it with its mate. See how many pairs each team can make.

Extra idea: Ask your kids to think of things that are referred to as a “pair” even though they are really one item. For example, a pair of pants, scissors, eyeglasses, binoculars, pliers, shorts, tights, earbuds, etc.

• If your razor has seen better days, try running it over a pair of jeans. The material can sharpen and realign the blades to get a little more life out of your razor.

• Use a small, lidded plastic con-tainer to store the following items in your vehicle through the cold winter months: flashlight, portable USB battery pack (charged, with charging cable for your device), blanket(s), road flares, first aid kit, ice scraper, sand or other traction-creating materi-al, bottles of water and some snacks, a weatherproof poncho/jacket and a pair of walking shoes with socks.

• The National Sleep Foundation says that exercise can contribute to better sleep. Work out at least 4-5 hours before you expect to hit the hay, though, because exercise can keep the heart rate elevated and give you ener-gy for hours after you are done. After-noon workouts are the best, but morn-ing sessions are great, too.

• “For a successful morning, prep breakfast and clothing, and go over your to-do list the night before. Have your kids do the same. Since we start-ed doing this, mornings are so much easier to bear, and we all get to sleep in a little longer too!” — N.L. in Ohio

• Hand-held heat. Fill an old sock (no holes) with uncooked rice and knot at open end. Pop in the microwave for no more than 2 minutes for a long-lasting heater-upper.

• “Prevent outdoor padlocks from freezing up by covering the keyhole with a small piece of duct tape, and then put the whole lock in a sand-wich-size baggie to seal.” — G.O. in New York
