This Tidbits shares some interesting election trivia. With another presidential election happening shortly in the United States, maybe it is time for some election news you may not have heard; funny, sad, and maybe a bit absurd! about 100 pounds (45.36 kg). William Howard Taft was the heaviest at about 300 pounds (136 kg) and actually had a bathtub installed in the White House that would fit four normal sized men! His size was not the most unusual thing or memorable trivia about William Howard Taft, it was his activity after he was president. He served as a Professor of Law at Yale until President Warren G. Harding selected him to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court eight years after his service as president, in 1923. In 1925, Calvin Coolidge was the first and only president to be sworn in by a former president. Taft, said that his greatest honor was serving as Chief Justice. He wrote: I dont remember that I ever was President. When the government for the United States of America was first formed, there were no political parties. George Washington served as president with no political party affiliation. The first political parties for the U.S. started in the late 1700s. On February 12, 1798, Thomas Jefferson wrote: Two political sects have arisen within the U.S., the one believing that the executive is the branch of our government which the most needs support; the other that like the analogous branch in the English government, it is already too strong for the republican parts of the Con-stitution. The former were called federalists, sometimes monocrats and sometimes aristocrats, sometimes tories like the corresponding group in the English government. The latter were called republicans, whigs, anarchists, jacobins, and sometimes disorganizers.

When the U.S. Constitution was written, there was no mention of political parties. Most of the framers of the document hoped that no political parties would form. They hoped the new country would be such that every-one would just get along! (agree!) The current two party system, with Democrats and Republicans, has been part of the political system in the U.S. for years. The first party was originally formed from many of the advisers that George Washington consulted with. Oddly the first political party, started in 1792, was called the Democratic-Republican Party. Many changes have happened with the political parties through the years. Smaller parties have tried to gain power but have never been very successful. The Repub-licans and Democrats are still the main newsmakers. Canada has also been a country dominated by two political parties, today the Liberal and Conservative par-ties. An interesting time in Canadian history was when there were seven distinct political parties in the legisla-ture in 1854. The Canadian parties at the time were four groups from Northern Canada: 1) the Tories, 2) moderate Con-servatives, led by the first Prime Minister of Canada, John A. Macdonald, known as Sir John A., 3) Bald-win Reformers, who were moderate Liberals, 4) and the Radical or advanced Liberal party, known as the Clear Grits. The other three parties were from Lower Canada. They were: 1) Parti Bleu, the majority of the French Canadians, considered a liberal party even though most French Canadians were conservative, 2) the Parti Rouge, which was a small party of French Canadian Liberals, some who were rather radical, and lastly, 3) an English-speaking minority in Lower Canada. People all over the world get fed up with politics. At a parliamentary election in Naples, Italy in 2008, a 41-year-old man ate his ballot in protest to the countrys politicians! He was charged with destroying election materials. In 2004, a woman in England was fined for trying to register her cows, Henry and Sophie Bull and her dog, Jake Woofies, as voters. Her barn was listed as a sepa-rate property and when forms asked who the residents of the property were, she listed the animals! For a last Tidbit on elections, imagine the con-fusion if our North American countries had the diversity of over 1,000 political parties! According to the Election Commission of India, that is the estimate of parties that exist in India. The commission has a list of symbols that political parties can use to represent their groups, including a kite, diesel pump, kettle, pressure cooker and many others. As you vote, be glad that we do have elections and that our ballots dont contain pressure cooker and kite parties!

SWEATER WEATHERIn many areas November is still sweater weather. Its not cold enough for winter coats but a nice wool, cashmere or even a cotton or synthetic sweater is just right for the cool temperatures. Sweaters have been around for centuries. The need for something warm to add a layer for cool days brought about the hobbies of knitting and crocheting. Sweaters were only used for warmth or as athletic items, not fashion, until the 1920s. When Lana Turner ap-peared in a fashionable sweater in the 1937 movie, They Wont Forget, sweaters became a fashion statement must for women. Cardigans, pullovers, sweater vests and more are now fashionable for men, women, boys and girls. One man who became known for wearing a sweater was Mr. Rogers. Fred McFeely Rogers, started the series, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood in 1966. Prior to the show that made him a household name in childrens programming, he had produced The Childrens Corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1950s, winning the first of many television awards. A gentle, humble television star, Mr. Rogers became the symbolic sweater-wearer. His show would start by him entering his television house after walking from his office. He entered wearing his formal business attire and as he sang the words, wont you be my neighbor, he would change into more comfortable clothes like his sweater and sneakers. This was the way he chose to get comfortable with friends as he shared his day with them in the land of make-believe and other areas of his neighborhood. Mr. Rogers Neighborhood is still showing, in fact, it is the longest-running program on public television. President George W. Bush presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Mr. Rogers in 2002, recognizing his contribution to the well-being of children and his long career in public television that demonstrated kindness, com-passion and learning. The medal is the highest civilian award given in the United States. In his show, when Mr. Rogers would change his shoes and put on his sweater, he was showing skills as well as routines that children needed to learn. He always put his shoes away and hung up his clothes, showing responsi-bilities that they needed to learn. The type of sweater that Mr. Rogers wore was a cardigan. Typically they button or zip down the front. Even though he made the sweater popular for his television audience, it had been around for centuries. The sweater was named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, a British military commander. A cardigan sweater is normally made by machine or hand knitted from wool. Fishermen of France and the British Isles were probably the first people to use cardigans. The heavy, hand-knit-ted wool was helpful in keeping them warm out on the water on gloomy days. The Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland at the mouth of Galway Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, an area where fishing and farming have been closely connected for centuries, are known for their wool sweaters. The outdoor workers needed warm coverings to keep warm during North Atlantic winters. The sweaters were made with many stitches that became associated with particular Irish clans. Aran sweaters have been knitted since the late 1800s and are still in demand today. While in the past they were made by hand, machines are used for most today. A true hand-stitched Aran sweater is quite valuable.

  • extra tiles, if you have them, or purchase matching replacement tile (you may need to take a piece of the damaged tile, once removed, to match the color). Use a grout saw to carefully cut away the grout around the edges of the damaged tile. This creates a little wiggle room to loosen the tile without damaging surrounding tiles. Next, using a hammer and small chisel, gently tap the tile loose. (Place the chisel on or near the damage rather than at the edge of the tile where other tile might be damaged.) Its OK if the damaged tile chips or cracks -- save it to do your color match.Once the tile is removed, brush or cut away debris or loose adhesive. Fit the new tile into the open space; if the tile fits correctly, apply a coat of tile adhesive to the back and fix it so that the spacing between the tiles edges and the edges of the other tiles is even. Let the adhesive dry completely, and then fill the edges with grout that matches the color of the surrounding grout. HOME TIP: Scraps of carpet and extra tiles are important to keep around for small repair jobs. At this point, nobody is really certain that Jeter, the best shortstop in Yankee history and the only player to gather 200 hits in postseason play, did actually break his ankle. Watching him get carried off the field is excruciating enough, but the sound has to be turned up to confirm.Ron Darling and John Smoltz surmise that he may have broken his ankle. Whatever, he says, rolling his eyes. Thanks, guys. The TV is again muted, and he signals to the engineer that hes ready to play. He takes a deep breath and launches into what ultimately would be just one of about 20 takes that night. The singer misses his mark, and he stops in frustration. They had, what? Fifteen runners on base tonight? This game should been over in the fifth inning, he says. The singer says Jeters career is over. Hes got a bum wheel now ... thats chronic pain, he says. I sprained my ankle 20 years ago, and I still cant put my work boots on when its raining. Peter shakes his head and tries to get back into the song. He takes a deep breath and strums an A chord. He stops again and pulls out his iPhone. After a few clicks, he announces the verdict. Swisher, again, doesnt fare well. Its broken. And Swisher looked like he was on heroin, bro.He shakes his head and goes back to the guitar. Its go-ing to be a long night. Jeter, man, he says. Jeter.

A SPORTING VIEWBy Mark VastoDown Goes Jeter

Peter is one of the best session guitarists in Los An-geles, but hes having a hard time playing tonight. Six years sober, hes usually able to play through a riot with the concentration that comes from almost triple that amount of time playing on stages in bars and clubs. Hes supposed to be recording tonight, but he cant take his eyes off the game.Dude ... Swisher looks like hes on heroin, he de-clares. He completely lost the game for us! What is he? Like, one for 40?Peter doesnt really think Nick Swisher, the rightfielder for the New York Yankees, is on heroin, but he does think hed be a better choice in right than Swisher. Even he could go hitless and not catch any hard hit ball coming his way, he reasons. After a few swigs of orange Fanta, Peter gets back into the pocket during a commercial. The sound on the TV is off while he plays, and he starts recording the track. He stops playing when Derek Jeter goes down. He stands up. Oh my god! Did Jeter just break his ankle? The replay shows it all ... and as replays are wont to do, it shows a diving Derek Jeter breaking his ankle, again and again.

    Ceramic Tile Floor Marred by ScratchesQ: My kitchen has a ceramic tile floor, and several of the tiles have so many scratches that they look dull even after cleaning. Can I repair the scratches, or does the tile need to be replaced? -- Carol in Eau Claire, Wis.A: Glazed ceramic tiles are tough and resistant to most of the wear and tear that happens in high-traffic areas, but they can still become scratched or dull over time. If the scratches are minor -- they mark the finish but dont go all the way through the color glaze -- its possible to polish them out.First, clean and mop the floor so that you have a clear, debris-free surface to work on. Next, starting with the first scratched tile, apply a small amount of brass cleaner/polish to the scratch with a lint-free cloth, rub-bing in circles. Let the polish dry, then buff away. If you dont have brass cleaner, toothpaste or baking soda can be used.To temporarily protect the tile surface, apply a bit of car wax -- a plain paste wax, not cleaner wax, which has an abrasive in it -- to the tile.Tiles that have been scratched too deeply to buff out or that are cracked or broken should be replaced.     Preparing Yourself for the Real World;

Becoming the Candidate Every Company Wants to Hire

Would You Hire Yourself? Studies show that 91 percent of recruiters screened prospective employees through social media. If your potential employer is taking time to search your name, you should do the same. Images on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter can be linked to search engines. Use a search engine to search for yourself and see what sites pop up. Next, go through your personal profiles on social media sites and make sure you dont have any embarrassing or unprofessional photos or postings. The same study by Reppler states, 69 percent of recruiters said they rejected a candidate based on what they saw on a social media site. This will also give you a chance to update your personal information to match the information on your resume as well.

Things such as your email address or your voicemail play a huge role in the decision making process. Call your phone and listen to your voicemail. If it is un-professional, change it. Do you have ring back tone? Rest assured that employers will not want to hear your favorite song when they call you

The interviewAppearance is a major factor when trying to be a mem-orable candidate. A persons first impression comes from appearance. Make sure your attire creates a great first impression and you do not talk yourself out of a job before you get a chance to talk. Arrive 15 minutes early for all appointments. This will allow you to take in the environment and look for items that you can use to build rapport before the interview starts.

Lastly, make sure you follow up. Ask for the inter-viewers business card before you leave. Thank them for taking the time to speak with you. Show apprecia-tion by sending a thank you letter immediately after the interview, showing your continued interest in the position.

Most importantly be yourself and remember the best perception of you is a professional you.

    "My Story" Carla Leeseberg

Like thousands of other enthusiastic women, I joined Silpada Designs to earn some extra money and have some fun doing what I love...playing with jewelry. I have been an independent Silpada Designs Representative for 4 months and have enjoyed every minute of it, which is why I encourage you to look at this opportunity. There are several reasons that being an independent Sil-pada Designs Representative has been fun and reward- ing for me. 1. I am always meeting new and exciting people every day. The conversation usually starts with me noticing their jewelry and how they have coordinated it into their own unique style.2. I have done several at home businesses in the past but this is the fi rst at home sales company that makes start-ing your own business so easy and incredibly afordable. I was able to pay for my start up kit with my fi rst two parties. I have been given so many opportunities to earn free jewelry (over $2000 to date) to increase my personal business supplies. Not only did I receive free jewelry I have also gotten kudos from Silpadas top management encouraging me keep up the great work! 3. I want to have freedom to stay at home with my daughter once I retire from the Air Force and still bring home a decent income and setting my own hours. These are just a few of the reasons I love Silpada De-signs and why being a Representative has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. There is so much to be gained that, with a little more information; I know you will share my enthusiasm about the business. It would be great to talk with you and share more about the jewelry, my experience and fi nd out what you would like Silpada Designs to mean for you and your future. If you're interested in ordering some beautiful sterling silver jewelry or if it is time for you to try something new and exciting, please contact me at (210-838-2744 or my personal webpage www.mysilpada.com/carla. leeseberg). I can't wait to introduce you to all that this business has given me!Carla Leeseberg Independent Silpada DesignsRepresentative

Going Gluten-FreeAccording to the National Digestive Diseases Informa-tion Clearinghouse, about 2 million people -- or 1 in 133 people -- in the United States have celiac disease. It is considered to be a genetic disorder, and can be diagnosed in infancy through adulthood. Both males and females can have the disease, but more women than men are diagnosed with it. Celiac Sprue is a disease in which a person does not tolerate gluten, the protein in wheat, barley, rye and, to a lesser extent, oats. Celiac Sprue is not a food allergy, but a disease that damages the small intestine and prevents absorption of nutrients. My daughter struggles with celiac disease, which makes family dinners an interesting blend of gluten-free products transformed into family favorites. The Celiac Sprue Association lists three things that hap-pen before the onset of the disease: a genetic predisposi-tion, a diet containing wheat, barley, rye or oats, and a trigger. The trigger could be something like overexposure to wheat, extreme stress, surgery or a viral infection. It is a complicated disease because a person can have it and not have symptoms. There have been instances where children have been diagnosed with Celiac Sprue, but then have symptoms disappear. They later found that although there were no symptoms, damage to the small intestine was still occurring. The damage in the small intestine is to the villi, which are thin, hairlike projections on the lining of the small intestine. They allow nutrients into the bloodstream. If the villi are damaged, malnutrition, anemia, weight loss and growth retardation can occur. Celiac disease is often underdiagnosed because it can be confused with other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis or Crohns disease. Symptoms

of celiac disease vary from person to person. To diagnose celiac disease, a physician will first do a blood test. If certain antibodies are present, they will do a small bowel biopsy to check for damage to the villi. The only way to treat the disease is the elimination of gluten in the diet. Usually people notice a difference within a short period of time. Maintaining a gluten-free diet allows the small intestine to heal. This recipe for Swiss Chard Sushi is not only gluten-free, its all vegetarian and totally delicious!

SWISS CHARD SUSHIYou can use zucchini, cucumbers, bell peppers or any other crisp veggies that have been sliced into thin strips in this recipe with delicious results.8 large leaves Swiss chard 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons coconut oil1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce1 cup cooked fried, brown or white rice 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper2 medium carrots, cut into thin strips2 green onions, roots removed, green and white parts cut into thin strips1/3 cup Ume plum vinegar2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil Prepare Swiss Chard: Rinse Swiss chard leaves under cool running water. Fill a large bowl with ice water and 1/2 tablespoon salt and set aside. Fill a large saucepan with water and bring to a boil over high heat. Add 1/2 tablespoon salt. Blanch chard leaves by submerging in the boiling water until the rib is softened and the leaves become limp -- about 1 minute. Transfer to the prepared ice bath, drain cooled leaves and stack between sheets of paper towel until dry. Cut out the rib on each leaf and set leaves aside. Make the rolls: Stir the coconut oil and soy sauce into the cooked rice. Lay the prepared Swiss chard, vein side up and stalk end pointing toward you, on a cutting board. Sprinkle with vinegar and sesame oil. Sprinkle the re-maining 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper and crushed red pepper over the carrots and green onions. Place a few pieces of the carrot and green onion and 2 heaping tablespoons of the rice at the end of the leaf. Fold the bottom edges of the leaf over the filling. Roll into a cigar shape, until it forms a tight bundle. Repeat with rest of filling and leaves. Keep chilled until ready to serve. Serves 4.Make the Dipping Sauce: Mix the Ume plum vinegar and the toasted sesame oil together in a small dish. Serve alongside rolls.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My entire family has lice. I am starting a support group for families who have had to experience this awful invasion of their scalps. I have reached the breaking point. Give me a plan for treatment and a timetable for their eradication from our home. -- Name Withheld Lest Neighbors Find OutANSWER: One of natures smallest creatures, the head louse upsets domestic tranquility with more revulsion than most health-endangering illnesses. Head lice bring no disease with them. They are tiny, only 3 millimeters (1/10 inch) in length. They feed on blood and die within a day or two off the scalp. After feeding, lice have a reddish-brown hue. The mother louse glues louse eggs to hair, and those structures are called nits. They are only 1 millimeter (4/100 inch) long. The eggs hatch in six to 10 days. If nits are more than a quarter of an inch from the scalp, the baby louse has already hatched, and the nit is no longer a problem. In an average life span of three months, the mother louse can lay up to 300 eggs.Lice are not an indication of poor hygiene. Most of the time, theyre introduced into a family by a child who caught them at school. They can infest other family members quickly. Transmission comes from direct contact with an infested individual and, less often, from contact with inanimate objects used by that individual, like hats, combs, brushes and bedding. Youre not alone. Six to 12 million Americans come down with head lice yearly. Almost all people with head lice have intense scalp itching. A number of methods effectively rid you of the problem. The first medicines used are permethrin (Nix) or pyrethrins (Rid), which are cheap and usually effective, although lice are becoming resistant to them in some locations. A second treatment is given seven to 10 days after the first. Ovide (malathion) is used if lice linger after Nix or Rid. And should Ovide not work, the oral medicine Stromectol (ivermectin) is available. A new medicine is Natroba (spinosad) suspension. It is held in reserve as a last resort. This nightmare should be over in two to three weeks. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband was told he had prostate cancer in 2010 and had his prostate removed. Now his doctor wants him to have PSA testing. He says he might need radiation because he has prostate cancer. If he has no prostate gland, how can he have prostate cancer? -- D.R.ANSWER: The doctor wants to be sure that cancer cells did not spread from to other body sites. Even though the gland was completely removed, not all the potential sites for cancer spread were removed. Thats all but impossible to do. The PSA test will show if prostate cancer is active in those other places. If it is, then further treatment is required. The booklet on the prostate gland discusses the PSA test and prostate cancer in detail. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1001W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. On Nov. 7, 1776, Congress chooses Richard Bache to succeed his father-in-law, Benjamin Franklin, as post-master general. Franklin invested nearly 40 years in the establishment of a reliable system of delivering mail. He was fired in 1774 for opening and publishing Mas-sachusetts Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinsons cor-respondence. On Nov. 5, 1895, Rochester, N.Y., patent attorney George Selden wins U.S. Patent No. 549,160 for an im-proved road engine powered by a liquid-hydrocarbon engine of the compression type. With that, as far as the government was concerned, George Selden had in-vented the car -- though he had never built a single one. On Nov. 10, 1928, the first installment of All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarques acclaimed novel of World War I, is first published in serial form. Remarques realistic depiction of trench warfare from the perspective of young soldiers was eventually trans-lated into more than 20 languages. On Nov. 11, 1942, Congress approves lowering the draft age to 18 and raising the upper limit to age 37, increasing the number of draftees. During the first draft in 1940, 50 percent were rejected for health reasons and 20 percent of those who registered were illiterate. On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American Leagues most valuable player for the first time in his career. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955. On Nov. 9, 1965, the biggest power failure in U.S. his-tory occurs as all of New York state, and parts of seven neighboring states and eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The blackout during the evening rush hour trapped 800,000 people in New Yorks subways and stranded thousands more in office buildings and eleva-tors. On Nov. 6, 1977, the earthen Toccoa Falls Dam in northeastern Georgia gives way, and 39 people die in the resulting flood. A volunteer fireman had inspected the dam and found everything in order just hours before it suddenly failed, sending water approaching speeds of 120 mph thundering down the canyon and creek.

DEAR PAWS CORNER: My cat Frank has been classified as obese by the veterinarian. Frank doesnt look that fat, and he moves around fine and plays a lot. How can the vet call him obese? Trying to get him to exercise more doesnt work, either. -- Susan J., PhoenixDEAR SUSAN: Cats, like people, sometimes put on weight so gradually that its the scale that sounds the first warning, rather than looks or lack of activity. Frank may not seem too fat, and he gets around just fine, but that good health wont last if the weight stays on him.He has quite a bit in his favor. It sounds like Frank is a healthy cat who stays active. You can encourage this activity by increasing the amount of time you play with him -- if you dangle a cat toy in front of Frank for five minutes every hour so, increase that to 10 minutes each time. Its also very important to follow the dietary guidelines set down by the veterinarian. Usually a pet diet involves reducing the amount of calories taken in each day. That means serving smaller portions at feeding time. Food treats must be avoided as well, so the extra calories dont go straight to your cats midsection.Keeping Franks weight down now will help prolong not only his life, but the quality of that life. Being obese will eventually lead to a host of expensive health problems -- diet and exercise cost mostly time and patience.Send your questions or tips to [email protected], or write to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Staying Active in Cold Weather

Here in New England, our evening walking group has stopped for the season. It was a nearly unanimous deci-sion, given the recent daily rain, dropping temperatures and earlier sunsets. I was the only holdout in the vote to stop walking until spring. If Im going to continue to get any exercise as fall moves into winter and its too cold to go out, Im going to have to plan for it and buy a few small pieces of equipment to keep in the house. If youre also forced indoors by cold weather, a mini stepper can serve as a temporary replacement for out-door walking or using a treadmill at the gym. The mini stepper has a place for both feet, and you just walk in place. The one I have my eye on is the The Wagan Compact Mini Stepper Exerciser, Model 2272. I found it on the Safe Home Products website (www.safehomeproducts.com). This stepper has a tubular steel frame with hand-holds for better balance, adjustable tension for a harder or easier workout, and it only takes up about 1 square foot of floor space. If you arent sure of your balance, a peddler might be perfect for you. With a peddler, you sit in a chair and peddle like youre on a bicycle. To make sure of getting an upper-body workout, take a look at handheld weights. If weight on your hands is a problem, you might want the kind that strap to your wrist. Either one would give a mild workout to shoulders and arms. Before you purchase any exercise gear, ask your doctor if he thinks it would be right for you.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

In this season of bitter partisan rivalries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: Do not trust to the cheering, for those persons would cheer just as much if you and I were going to be hanged. The man who fi rst made that observation was Lord Protector of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, probably from septicemia. He was so reviled that, three years later, he body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall. Those who study such things say that if all the gold in the world were combined in one lump, it would result in a cube that measures 20 yards on each side.

If youre planning a trip to Lima, Peru, you might want to add Puente de Piedra to your sightseeing list. Though the Spanish name means Bridge of Stone, the span is popularly known as the Bridge of Eggs. Legend has it that in 1608, the builders the used the whites of 10,000 seabird eggs in the mortar that holds the stones together. Pumpkins are native to the Americas, not Europe. This is why the original jack-o-lantern was a turnip. What do the words obscene, tranquil, mediate, catastrophe, dire, critical, vast and apostrophe have in common? All of them appeared in print for the fi rst time in the works of William Shakespeare. If youre contemplating a move to Corpus Christi, Texas, be sure to keep in mind that in that town, its illegal to raise alligators in your home.***Thought for the Day: One fool can ask more questions in a minute than 12 wise men can answer in an hour. -- Vladimir Lenin
