The March winds are the morning yawn.” That about sums it up for us. Spring- time brings relief from winter. It’s all about renewal, warmth and new beginnings. So sit back and enjoy, as Tidbits welcomes in the new season this week. The start of spring is seen by the vernal equinox, which occurs on March 20 or 21 each year in the Northern Hemisphere. Oddly enough, this date is also the autum- nal equinox—the first day of autumn—in the Southern Hemisphere. Turnabout is fair play: the autumnal equi- nox in the north (which occurs in late Sep- tember), is also the first day of spring south of the equator. No kidding: Spring fever is not a figment of your imagination. It is a real physical con- dition that occurs when a sudden warm spell follows a long cold period. As the temperature rises, the body has to get rid of heat; there’s a dilation or expansion of the blood vessels so that blood can be car- ried to the body surface where heat can be lost quickly. Some people experience an energetic feeling. Hence, spring fever. Here comes the sun: Suppose you were standing on the equator during either the vernal or autumnal equinox. Now look up. You would see the sun pass directly over- head. There are only two times in the year when this happens. Full tilt: Why is there more daylight in spring and summer? Easy. In spring, the Earth’s axis is tilted toward the sun, increasing the number of daylight hours and bring- ing warmer weather that causes plants to bring forth new growth. continued on page 2! TIDBITS® CELEBRATES THE EQUINOX

Germany, people make “egg trees” that are decorated like Christmas trees. In Hungary, boys sprinkle girls with perfumed water — and in return, girls prepare a holiday dinner for them. It’s commonly called “Spring Break,” that •time of year when students have a week-long break from the tedium of school and travel south or to parts unknown to party; Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Cancun, Mexico are two favorite hot spots. Other countries celebrate it too, including China, Korea, Ja-pan, Germany and Mexico.

SPRING IS HERE! (continued)Celtic tradition, which is based solely on •daylight and the strength of the noon sun, says that spring begins in early February and continues until early May.Spring forward. In recent decades season-•al creep has been observed, which means that many signs of the season are happen-ing earlier than expected in many regions. We’re talking a couple of days per decade.Akitu was a spring festival in ancient Meso-•potamia. The name is from the Sumerian language for “barley”, originally marking two festivals celebrating the beginning of each of the two half-years of the Sumerian Calendar, marking the sowing of barley in autumn and the cutting of barley in spring. The Lunar New Year is sometimes called •the Chinese Spring Festival. It is the most important of the traditional Chinese holi-days, particularly by people on mainland China and Taiwan. The festival traditionally beings on the first day of the first monthin the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th.Hurricane season •also begins in late spring, on May 15th in the northeastern PacificandJune1stin the northern At-lantic. You don’t see hurricanes before these dates although they do sometimes occur. One of the earliest was Tropical Storm Ana in mid-April 2003. Severe weather generally occurs during •the spring, when warmer air invades the lower latitudes just as cold air pushes out from the polar regions. Spring is also when floodingisalsomostcommoninandnearmountainous areas during this time of year due to the melting of snow, aided by warm rains. In America, “Tornado Alley” is most active •by far during the spring. The Rocky Moun-tains prevent the surging hot and cold air fronts from moving westward and instead force them directly at each other. Some of the worst blizzards have occurred •in the spring. Does anyone remember the Great Blizzard of 1993, which brought hur-ricane conditions and then light snow to northern Florida on March 13th, and de-positedup tofive feetofsnow inpartsofthe Appalachian Mountains. The festival of Basant, in Pakistan, is held in •the ancient eastern city of Lahore. Basant ismarkedbykite-flying,rooftopgatherings,garden parties and horse riding events.

May Day is not an American holiday, but it’s •celebrated all over the world. During ancient Roman times, spring was •celebrated with the Feast of Floralia. This markedthefloweringofthegrainsandthebounty of the animals as spring continued. The egg became an important symbol dur-ing this time period, thanks to the symbol-ism of egg bringing forth life and nourishing people. As the Italian Feast of Floralia evolved, •people began creating eggs out of many materials, including chocolate, as gifts for their loved ones. Young matrons carried these eggs with them in baskets through-out the spring, trying to determine the pos-sible gender of a future child. In Germany, Walpurgisnacht, on April 30th •and May 1st celebrates the release of win-ter’s hold on the land and the oncoming joy of summer. More spring legends: On May 1st, it is be-•lieved that the earth spirits like sprites and fairies, emerge to bring the land safely to summer. People celebrate with great feasts of food and drink as the look forward to the coming of summer. In Thailand, a three-day water festival on •April 13-15 marks Songkran, the Buddhists’ celebration of the new year. Parades fea-ture statues of Buddha that spray water on passersby. In small villages, young people throw water at each other for fun. People also release fish into rivers as an act ofkindness. The Jewish holiday of Passover is held dur-•ing spring. Passover begins with two nights of a special dinner called Seders. During these two dinners, families read from a book called the Haggadah about the an-cient Israelites’ exodus from Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. As they honor their ancestors,Jewsreaffirmtheimportanceoffreedom. On Easter, Christians celebrate the res-•urrection of Jesus. People attend church and also enjoy different Easter customs. In

Why 2 Hearing Aids Are Better Than 1: Better Sound Discrimination: similar sounds can often be distinguished when heard with two ears. Improved Understanding: information from two ears is blended in the brain to form a complete picture of sound, one ear alone is not capable of doing this. Sound Source Location: it takes two ears to effec-tively be able to locate where a sound comes from. Less Stressful Listening: Listening with two ears is less stressing and you don’t have to turn your “good ear” to sound. We were born with two ears for a reason. When com-pared to listening with one ear, with two we can hear from both sides, hear a variety of sounds, be able to locate sounds, and have better larity and understand-ing.Without two ears our brain is presented with an incomplete picture of sound making communication harder.

On • March 28, 1814, the funeral of Guillotin, the inventor and namesake of the infamous execution device, takes place outside of Paris. Guillotin had built the guillotine to show the intellectual and social progress of the Revolution; by killing aristocrats and journeymen the same way, equality in death was ensured. On • March 23, 1839, the initials “O.K.” are first published, in TheBoston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for “oll correct,” a popular slang misspelling of “all correct” at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans. On • March 27, 1912, in Washington, D.C., Helen Taft, wife of President William Taft, and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, plant two Yoshina cherry trees on the northern bank of the Potomac River, near the Jefferson Memorial. The event was held in celebration of a gift by the Japanese government of 3,020 cherry trees to the United States. On • March 22, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt signs the Beer and Wine Revenue Act. This law levies a federal tax on all alcoholic beverages to raise revenue for the federal government and gives individual states the option to further regulate the sale and distribution of beer and wine.On • March 24, 1945, Billboard publishesitsfirstpop-musicchartforalbums.ThefirstNo.1albumwasNat King Cole’s “King Cole Trio.” Billboard had been publishing charts for single records since 1940.On • March 25, 1958, Sugar Ray Robinson defeats Carmen Basilio to regain the middleweight boxing championship. Born Walker Smith, Jr., “Sugar Ray” got his boxing name when he borrowed his friend Ray Robinson’s Amateur Athletics Union card to enter a boxing tournament at age 16.On • March 26, 1987, responding to a 911 call, police raid the Philadelphia home of Gary Heidnik and findan appalling crime scene. In the basement of his dilapidated house was a veritable torture chamber where three women were found chained to a sewer pipe. Heidnik was one the inspirations for the Buffalo Bill character in “Silence of the Lambs.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A pesky health problem should clear up soon. Meanwhile, travel -- both for personal as well as for busi-ness reasons -- is strong in the Aries aspect this week, and well into the next.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Look for Bo-vines to be on the move this week, whether it’s traveling for fun or for business. Other “moves” include workplace adjustments and, for some, relationship changes.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Geminis who have just gone through a hectic period involv-ing job and/or family matters might want to take some well-earned time out to relax and restore those drained energy levels.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A romantic situation seems to have stalled, just when the Moon Child was expecting it to go forward. Could that be a bad case of miscommunica-tion going on. Talk it over openly and honest-ly.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Showing a genu-ine interest in something that’s important to a friend, family member or colleague could open a communication line that had been pretty much shut down for a while.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Mak-ing a potentially life-changing decision takes as much knowledge as you can gather, plus determination and patience. Take your time working it out. Don’t let anyone rush you.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You should be back on schedule and heading in the right direction after clearing up a misun-derstanding. But there could still be some set-backs. If so, correct them immediately.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A business matter keeps you pretty busy, but try to squeeze in time to be with family as well as close friends. You need the good vibrations you get from people who care for you.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Investing in an attractive prospect (busi-ness or personal) with little or no information can be risky. Avoid future problems by getting all the facts before you act.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone close to you might have an unex-pected reaction to a decision you feel you’re prepared to make. Listen to his or her point of view. It could prove to be surprisingly helpful.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t give up yet. That once warm, personal relationship that seems to be cooling off fast could recover with some tender, loving care, and who better than you to provide it? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Career matters are strong this week. You might want to enter a training program to enhance your skills. Also, consider getting professional help in preparing a brilliant resume.BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of re-specting the feelings of others, which is one reason people feel comfortable having you in their lives.

The teacher gave her fifth-grade class an assignment: get their parents to tell them a story with a moral at the end of it. The next day the kids came back and one by one be-gan to tell their stories. Ashley said, “My fa-ther’s a farmer, and we have a lot of egg-lay-ing hens. One time we were taking our eggs to market in a basket on the front seat of the car when we hit a big bump in the road and all theeggswentflyingandbrokeandmadeamess.” “What’s the moral of the story?” asked the teacher. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!” “Very good,” said the teacher. Next little Sarah raised her hand and said, “Our family are farmers too. But we raise chickens for the meat market. We had a dozen eggs one time, but when they hatched we only got ten live chicks, and the moral to this story is, ‘Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.’”“Thatwasafinestory,Sarah.Mi-chael, do you have a story to share?” “Yes, my daddy told me this story about my Aunt Karen.Aunt Karen was a flight engineer inthe Gulf War and her plane was hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory, and all she had was a bottle of whiskey, a machine gun, and a machete. She drank the whiskey on the way down so it wouldn’t break and then she landed right in the middle of a hundred ene-my troops. She killed seventy of them with the machine gun until she ran out of bullets. Then she killed twenty more with the machete until the blade broke. Then she killed the last ten with her bare hands.” “Good heavens,” said thehorrifiedteacher,“whatkindofmoraldidyour daddy tell you from that horrible story?” “Stay away from Aunt Karen when she’s been drinking!”A flock of sheep are romping in a field, happily going “baa baa” to each other and dis-cussing life as usual when suddenly they hear a “moo mooooooo!” They look around and see only sheep. They carry on playing as before. “Moo moooo mmmoo!” One sheep can hear

Hefinallyworkeduptheenergytogooutandask his wife what was for supper. Well, his missus was quite irritated about him sitting in the air-conditioned house all day while she did all the work, so she scolded him. “I can’t believe you’re asking me about supper right now! And it is true we have ice cream. But we don’t have the syrup.” He says, “You have a car, don’t you?”A farmer gets sent to jail, and his wife is trying to hold the farm together until her hus-band can get out. She’s not, however, very good at farm work, so she writes a letter to him in jail: “Dear sweetheart, I want to plant the potatoes. Plant A Healing Garden(NAPSI)-Here’s an idea that’s growing in popularity: Plant a garden to help you or someone you care about heal physically, spiritually or emotionally. For most of history, gardens have had a strong relationship to health and healing. Today, people use healing gardens to restore the body, spirit and mind. Gardens create a sense of calm, balance, hope and inspiration, which greatly improve the recovery process. A healing garden is an opportunity to observe and be a part of the life cycle, giving a sense of purpose and fulfillment.Gardensofferfreshair, exerciseand sunlight, important for reducing stress, anxiety and depression. That’s why hospitals, nursing homes, hospices and cancer-support centers across the nation use healing gardens for their patients. In fact, doctors at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida discovered that patients who had a view of the healing garden from their rooms took less pain medication and had shorter hospital stays than those without such a view. Healing gardens are often used to help women in their battles against breast cancer. That’s important, since the National Cancer Institute estimates that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at

some point during her lifetime. When planting a home healing garden, consider the following to maximize its healing qualities: •Overall layout: Include places to sit andreflect, pray, meditate or relax, such asa wooden swing. Picture what calms or inspires you and include these elements and items. A small pond, garden art, wind chimes, even interesting rocks might add to your garden’s tranquility. Enclose it with shrubs or fencing to create a secluded retreat and include paths for walking.• Aromatic plants: Sweet-smelling plantscan enhance the relaxing atmosphere. Plant herbs such as basil, rosemary, sage, lemon thyme or lavender. Surround your garden with scented trees, such as pine and eucalyptus, to create shade and shelter. A new compact, reblooming lilac, called Bloomerang, has clusters of purple-pink, sweet-scentedflowers,making itexcellentfor creating a fragrant hedge.•Healingplants:Includemedicinalplantstosymbolize the health aspects of your garden. Lavender, sage, basil, thyme and St.-John’s-wort have been prized for centuries for their medicinal qualities. Fruits and vegetables can symbolize--and supply--nutrition. For example, the fruit of Sambucus, also called elderberry, is rich in antioxidants. An

elderberry called Black Lace has intense purple-black,finelycutfoliage. Its fruit can be used in jam or even wine.• Attracting wildlife:Add a birdbath, bird feeders or birdhouses and put in plants that attract butterflies.A new shrub, Lo & Behold Blue Chip buddleia, attractsflocksofbutterfliesaswellas hummingbirds. It’s the only miniature butterfly bush with loads of fragrant blueflowersthatbloomcontinuously.•Color:Plantswithbrightcolorscanliftthespirits. To show support for overcoming breast cancer, consider pink flowers. Anewly available choice, Invincibelle Spirit Hydrangea, is the very first pink-flowered“Annabelle” hydrangea. You can see more than 100 blooms on a single plant. Its dark-pink buds open to hot-pink flowers, whichmature to a soft pink. In addition, for every Invincibelle Spirit sold, Proven Winners ColorChoice will donate a dollar to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. These plants are at better garden centers.
