CODE OF HONOR FACES FIVE RIVALS IN WOODWARD AT BELMONTBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

It was two years ago that Code of Honor ran in a grade 1 fall stakes

at Belmont Park in preparation for a trip west to the Breeders' Cup.

A scenario with some of those elements, but not a lot of them, will take place Oct. 2 when Will Farish's 5-year-old Code of Honor will make his 18th career start.

He will once again be running in a grade 1 fall stakes at Belmont Park, but this time it's the $500,000 Woodward Stakes (G1) at 1 1/8 miles as an older horse instead of the 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) as a 3-year-old facing older

horses for the first time. And, though the Breeders' Cup

will again be contested on the West Coast in November, the World Championships at Del Mar may not be in his future. Pending what happens in Saturday's race, Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey's current inclination is to send the

homebred son of Noble Mission to Kentucky for the Nov. 26 Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1) at Churchill Downs, which he finished second in last year and could be a springboard to the rich grade 1 tests early in 2022.

"Let's get through this one on Saturday first, but my preference would be to run in the Clark as opposed to the Breeders' Cup and going out there (to California) and running on dirt he's not used to and the horses stabled out there are used to it," said McGaughey, who shipped Code of Honor west to finish a dull seventh in the 2019 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park. "I think if he stays in form the owners would be more than eager to keep racing him into the start of next year."

Given all of that, the Woodward, which had been contested at Saratoga Race Course and basically switched spots on the stakes calendar with the Jockey Club Gold Cup, promises to play a big role in determining Code of Honor's future as he attempts to regain his status among the top horses in training.

Going into the 2019 Jockey Club Gold Cup, Code of Honor had won the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) and when his number was put up in the win spot via disqualification in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the future seemed extremely bright for him. But since then, his only win in his next seven starts was a victory in the 2020 Westchester Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park, where he has a record of 3-2-1 in six starts.

After a disappointing fifth-place, 10-length loss in the Jan. 23 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) to start the year, McGaughey pulled the 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) runner-up out of training for a freshening.

"After he ran in the Pegasus, we sent him home and he had some bone remodeling issues. I thought a couple of times we brought him back too fast, so I wanted to send him to Niall Brennan in Ocala and give him enough time for everything to come together," McGaughey said about the $2.8 million earner. "I'm pleased with the way everything has gone."

The initial results were superb as the multiple grade 1 winner looked as good as ever, returning from a seven-month layoff and posting a sharp 2 1/2-length victory in the Aug. 21 Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park in a quick 1:42.38 for the 1 1/16 miles.

"I would have started him off at Saratoga but they only had seven-furlong and mile-and-an-eighth races," McGaughey said. "Now that he's older, seven furlongs isn't his thing, and I think at that track, for horses coming off a layoff or who are lightly raced, a mile and an eighth can be a pretty grueling race. So, when I saw the Iselin, I thought that would be a place to get a good, solid race in him in a graded stakes. I thought it was a good prep race and the most logical place to run him."

Paco Lopez rode Code of Honor for the first time in the Iselin and handled the assignment well enough to merit a return call in the Woodward.

"I liked what I saw in Paco and I liked his interest after the race," McGaughey said. "He called me and told me it might be the nicest horse he was ever on and he sure would like to ride him again and that was good enough for me. I like someone who has confidence in what they are doing and thought he deserved a chance to ride him back."

Several others in the field of six have their eyes squarely focused on the Classic, including Godolphin's Maxfield, who is making his first start since finishing second to Knicks Go in the Aug. 7 Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.

The homebred Street Sense 4-year-old has won seven of his nine starts for trainer Brendan Walsh and will be making his first start at Belmont Park. Among those seven wins are victories in the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at 2 and the Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet (G2) and Stephen Foster Stakes (G2) prior to the Whitney.

"It's absolutely important," Walsh said about the Woodward, "especially with a horse like him, who we always thought would get better as he gets older. For his stallion career and everything, it would be very important to get a grade 1 win in him this year. I think we saw an advance on him in the Whitney because he ran right through the wire, which I was pleased to see him do. It all bodes well for the races ahead."

Bill Mott will send out two starters—Art Collector and Forza Di Oro—seeking a fifth Woodward win.

Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector figures to be on or near the lead in the one-turn, nine-furlong Woodward and could be tough to catch as he bids for a third straight win since moving to Mott's barn this summer. The homebred Bernardini 4-year-old is coming off a victory around three turns in the Aug. 27 Charles Town Classic Stakes (G2).

"He's made no mistakes so far. He looks great and the horse is doing very well. We're very pleased with him," Mott said.

Don Alberto Stable's Forza Di Oro was the 6-5 favorite in the Sept. 4 Jockey Club Gold Cup but tired in the stretch and finished third.

"It could have been the distance. We were concerned about that going in," Mott said about the son of Speightstown's effort in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. "He's capable of a different running style. We'll leave that up to the jock."

St. Elias Stable's Dr Post returns home to Belmont after a trip west for the TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar. After falling back on the final turn, the son of Quality Road rallied to finish third, 5 3/4 lengths behind the winner.

"(Jockey Joel Rosario) seemed to think that maybe he was struggling with the track a little bit in the middle part of the race for some reason. He seemed to get a hold of it well late in the race, but just put himself in a tough spot with too much to do. It wasn't a bad race by any means," trainer Todd Pletcher said about the 2020 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) runner-up. BH

CDI SELLS ARLINGTON PROPERTY TO CHICAGO BEARSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Arlington International Racecourse owner Churchill Downs Inc. announced Sept. 29 that it has sold the

326-acre track property in Arlington Heights, Ill., to the Chicago Bears.

CDI said it had signed a purchase and sale agreement with the NFL team, which will pay $197.2 million for the property. The Bears could use the property to build a new stadium or negotiate a better deal on their current stadium, Soldier Field.

"Finalizing the (purchase and sale agreement) was the critical next step in continuing our exploration of the property and its potential," said Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips. "Much work remains to be completed, including working closely with the Village of Arlington Heights and surrounding communities, before we can close on this transaction.

"Our goal is to chart a path forward that allows our team to thrive on the field, Chicagoland to prosper from this endeavor, and the Bears organization to be ensured a strong future. We will never stop working toward delivering Bears fans the very best experience. We will continue to provide updates on our progress at the appropriate time."

Oddly enough, CDI had owned Hollywood Park before selling that property in 2005 to the Bay

Meadows Land Company for $257.7 million. Today SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, resides on that property.

CDI noted that there were a number of bidders for the Arlington property.

"This has been an extraordinarily competitive bid process," said CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen. "Congratulations to the Chicago Bears for their professionalism and perseverance. It is clear they are committed to an exciting vision for their team and their fans. We wish them the greatest success and are excited for the opportunity this brings to the Village of Arlington Heights and the future economic development of this unique property."

In a text, Dave McCaffrey, executive director of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, questioned CDI's commitment to racing.

"This shouldn't come as a shock. Churchill did what their past performance lines suggested—they closed another track."

In a Bears release, Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes was optimistic about the land's future.

"I could not be more excited about the news that the Chicago Bears have signed a purchase and sale agreement to buy the Arlington Park property in our community," Hayes said. "My goal for any redevelopment has always been to put this prime piece of real estate to its highest and best use, and I can't think of a higher and better use than this one.

"There is a long way to go as we begin this journey, and many issues for the community to discuss, but the Village is committed to working with the Bears

organization and all stakeholders to explore this opportunity for Arlington Heights and the northwest suburban region."

The Chicago Tribune reports that Soldier Field, capacity 61,500, is the smallest NFL stadium currently in use. The paper also noted that the Bears also would be able to develop the land around Arlington with shopping, dining, and entertainment if it moves forward on a stadium at the location.

According to the Tribune, The Bears' lease at the stadium runs through 2033, and an investigation by the paper found the team would have to pay $84 million in damages to the city of Chicago if it breaks the lease in five years. The two sides likely would enter into negotiations to reach a financial settlement, officials said.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, on WSCR-AM's Mully & Haugh Show on Wednesday morning, said she would try to keep the Bears in Chicago.

"I'm the mayor of the city, I'm a Bears fan of longstanding, I'm going to do everything I can to try to keep the Bears in Chicago," Lightfoot said. "But just as this is a business decision for them, it's a business decision for us.

"They actually have to come to us and tell us what they want. We have been open to a conversation. They have not."

There was no immediate information on any possibility of continuing racing at the Arlington site during any transition. Earlier this month CDI did not apply for race dates in 2022. Hawthorne Race Course was granted 76 Thoroughbred race dates, a reduction in dates for the Chicago area from this year when both Hawthorne and Arlington operated. Hawthorne plans to run separate meets of Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds in 2022.

CDI anticipates closing of the sale, which is subject to a number of closing conditions, in late 2022 or early 2023 and said it plans to use the proceeds from the sale to purchase or invest in a replacement property. Those plans to purchase or invest in a replacement property are in line with what CDI has said since announcing the sale. It has said it would like to build or invest in another track in Illinois.

BloodHorse previously has reported that CDI soured on adding casino gaming at Arlington as it was too close to Rivers Casino, in which CDI is the majority stakeholder.

If this is the end of racing at Arlington, it closes the book on a rich history for a track that initially opened in 1927. In short order the Arlington Classic would become one of the top races for 3-year-olds in the country, drawing the likes of Triple Crown winners Gallant Fox and Omaha in the 1930s. Stars including Nashua, Dr. Fager, and Alydar would follow in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s.

Arlington became the world's first track to offer a $1 million race for Thoroughbreds when it launched the Arlington Million Stakes (G1T) in 1981.

Fire destroyed the Arlington clubhouse in July 1985 but the track pulled things together the next month to stage the Arlington Million, as some 35,000 fans watched from tents and temporary facilities. The "Miracle Million" would earn the track an Eclipse Award.

Owner Richard Duchossois would rebuild the track—a lavish, modern racing facility recognized as one of the best in North American racing. It maintained that status to this day.

Despite the sparkling facility, Duchossois would have to close the track for two seasons, 1998 and 1999, before selling to CDI in 2000—a deal that saw Duchossois pick up nearly four million shares of CDI common stock.

Confident Chicago area racing fans would support such ventures, Arlington has been willing to put races together to draw top equine stars. In 1973 it landed Secretariat for his first start after the Triple Crown in the Arlington Invitational, drawing more than 41,000 fans; and 23 years later it would attract Cigar, who secured his 16th straight win before more than 34,000 fans in the Arlington Citation Challenge Invitational Stakes.

FISHMAN IN COURT FOR PLEA CHANGE OCT. 6By Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Jordan Fishman, one of numerous individuals charged in a horse-doping scheme to distribute

various misbranded and adulterated substances, has a change-of-plea hearing scheduled in court next week.

An order filed Sept. 29 in the Southern District of New York indicates a hearing before United States District Court Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil Oct. 6. The government accuses Fishman of compounding performance-enhancing drugs to specifications for veterinarian Seth Fishman for the purpose of providing those substances to horse trainers and others for administration.

More than two dozen individuals have been charged. Some defendants have already changed their pleas from not guilty to guilty, most notably veterinarian Kristian Rhein and embattled trainer Jorge Navarro, both of whom are suspended from racing.

Others, such as fellow suspended trainer Jason Servis, have maintained not guilty pleas while awaiting

the judge's rulings on their legal motions to suppress wiretap evidence collected by the government. Recordings of telephone conversations are crucial to the government's case, having captured some defendants discussing illegal activities.

Navarro faces up to five years in prison after submitting his guilty plea, Rhein up to three years.

During prior hearings in which defendants altered their pleas to guilty, Vyskocil walked the accused through a series of questions in which they admitted to breaking laws and racing rules. In some replies, they implicated other defendants. BH

NYRA CALLS BAFFERT'S CONTEMPT CHARGES 'MERITLESS'By Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

The New York Racing Association submitted a Sept. 29 response to trainer Bob Baffert's civil contempt

motion calling it "meritless and irrelevant to the Court's inquiry."

The 28-page document filed with the United States District Court Eastern District of New York involves NYRA's bid to conduct a disciplinary hearing with Baffert after announcing a new set of protocols and procedures for such matters. Baffert's attorney went to court, claiming a July 14 order by Judge Carol Bagley

Amon lifting NYRA's temporary suspension of the Hall of Fame trainer prevented the organization from conducting the hearing.

In advance of an Oct. 5 court date before Judge Bagley Amon in federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., NYRA also filed a 100-page sworn affidavit from NYRA president and CEO Dave O'Rourke outlining the evidence, charges, and hearing procedures in the case and

reinforcing NYRA's contention that the July 14 ruling did not clearly and unambiguously prohibit NYRA from initiating a hearing regarding Baffert's conduct.

In Tuesday's response, NYRA says it did not violate the court order and that it provided Baffert with "exactly what he argued he was entitled to in support of his motion for a preliminary injunction—notice and an opportunity to be heard."

In her July 14 decision, Judge Bagley Amon cited a lack of due process as a reason for her ruling in Baffert's favor.

In stating that it was providing Baffert with the hearing he sought in the July court case, NYRA said, "This Court should not hold NYRA in contempt—or issue a cease and desist order prohibiting NYRA from taking any action relating to potentially suspending Plaintiff—because Plaintiff has failed to meet his heavy burden to show any of the three elements for contempt: (1) a clear and unambiguous prohibition in the Order barring NYRA from establishing and utilizing a hearing process with respect to Plaintiff; (2) clear and convincing proof that NYRA violated the Order; and (3) evidence that NYRA has not diligently attempted to comply with the Order in a reasonable manner."

In addressing the new protocols and procedures for its disciplinary hearings, NYRA wrote, "In compliance with the Order, NYRA developed detailed and comprehensive hearing rules and procedures governing any disciplinary proceedings. These procedures call for a hearing overseen by an independent hearing officer, require that a formal statement of charges be provided to a licensee in order to initiate proceedings, and permit a licensee to be represented by counsel, testify, produce witnesses, present documentary evidence, and examine opposing witnesses and evidence."

NYRA also asked Judge Bagley Amon to toss out Baffert's request of approximately $162,000 in fees stemming from the July case.

The court case arose after Zedan Racing Stables' Medina Spirit gave Baffert his record-breaking seventh Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) victory May 1. Eight days later it was revealed that the colt's post-race drug test indicated the presence of betamethasone, a corticosteroid not allowed in a horse's system on race day in Kentucky. A split sample confirmed the original finding, though no ruling has yet been issued by Kentucky stewards with follow-up drug testing still ongoing.

While Baffert claimed the drug's presence was due to the application of a topical creme for a rash, Churchill Downs announced May 9 it would block him from entering horses there. The track ultimately suspended him for two years through the conclusion of its 2023 spring meet. BH

NEW COALITION TO PRESS ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF NY RACINGBy Tom Precious

Amid increasing protests over state-authorized subsidies to the horse racing industry, a coalition

of racing, business, union, and farming interests is being formed to press the economic importance of the Thoroughbred and harness sectors in New York.

The group, called "We Are NY Horse Racing'' and announced the morning of Sept. 29, has two dozen founding members, including the New York Racing Association, groups representing breeders and horsemen, several labor groups, OTBs, the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, and New York Farm Bureau.

The coalition, at www.nyhorseracing.com, plans to press its cause through events, paid media, and other means.

"New York's horse breeders and farm owners have propelled the sport forward in recent years, and we look forward to contributing our collective voice to this important effort,'' said Najja Thompson, executive director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders.

"We must do everything we can to secure the livelihoods of the backstretch community that keeps our racetracks running,'' said Rev. Humberto Chavez of the New York Race Track Chaplaincy.

The coalition's formation comes as racetracks in New York have faced growing opposition from an array of groups protesting everything from what they say are

animal rights abuses at racetracks to tens of millions of dollars in government-authorized payments via various means that should be directed to other state programs.

The new coalition cited a 2018 report by the American Horse Council that found horse racing in New York has a $3 billion total economic impact and supports 19,000 jobs. There are 11 racetracks in the state, counting all breeds.

The coalition also includes several regional OTB groups, several harness racing organizations, the Backstretch Employees Service Team, Discover Saratoga, a Saratoga casino and hotel, and unions representing laborers, painters, and building and construction trades workers. Other members include the Long Island Contractors' Association, the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, the Belmont Child Care Association, and the Empire State Harness Horsemen's Alliance.

The range of the coalition's membership would suggest the seriousness with which the racing industry takes the increasingly organized opposition to horse racing in New York.

"New York agriculture and horse racing go hand in hand, which is why our organization is pleased to be a part of We Are NY Horse Racing,'' said Jeff Williams, the New York Farm Bureau's public policy director.

"We're proud to support this new coalition that will educate New Yorkers about the broad impact of the industry, including the employment of hundreds of unionized construction workers,'' added Vincent Albanese, policy and public affairs director at the New York State Laborers' Organizing Fund.

The group's formation comes at a time when New York has a new governor, Democrat Kathy Hochul, who took office a month ago following the downfall of Andrew Cuomo. Hochul in the coming months will be putting together a new state budget, which could change—or not—how some horse racing industry payments are directed.

The coalition's emergence also comes at a time when the state legislature has taken an increasingly left-leaning turn in the past couple of years and includes a number of Democrats—who control both houses—opposed to state-directed subsidies for many kinds of industries and who back redirection of such funds to social, education, and other government-funded programs. KEENELAND ADDS FOUR MEMBERS TO ADVISORY BOARDBy BloodHorse Staff

Keeneland announced Sept. 29 four new additions to its Advisory Board of Directors: prominent

horsewoman Julie Cauthen, Three Chimneys Farm chief commercial officer Case Clay, Airdrie Stud vice president Bret Jones, and LNJ Foxwoods' Jaime Roth.

Longtime directors Seth Hancock of Claiborne Farm and Will Farish of Lane's End will move to emeritus roles on the Advisory Board.

All four new directors will begin their service at the Advisory Board meeting in October.

"Each of our new directors—Julie, Case, Bret, and Jaime—bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective on the industry from different vantage points that will be instrumental in guiding Keeneland as we meet the opportunities and challenges of the future," Keeneland president and CEO Shannon Arvin said. "We thank them for their service and loyalty to Keeneland."

Cauthen has served in a variety of positions in the Thoroughbred industry, among them chief operating officer for Donegal Racing, senior analyst for EQUIX Biomechanics, director of 2-year-olds in training

sales for Reynolds Bell Thoroughbred Services, and currently, as owner of Julia O. Cauthen Bloodstock, specializing in sales selection and purchases, matings, and appraisals. At Keeneland, she was director of owner and client development and is now a member of the September Yearling Sale inspection team. She also serves on the board of Blue Grass Farms Charities. Cauthen grew up in Midway, Ky., close to Nuckols Farm, which belonged to her grandparents, including former Keeneland trustee Charlie Nuckols.

Clay is chief commercial officer for Three Chimneys Farm, where he works to identify new opportunities for the farm and its customers, and helps to grow its network of relationships and ownership opportunities via joint ventures and partnerships with current and new clients and friends—some for whom he serves as a consultant as well. Clay also worked at both the Irish National Stud and Arrowfield Stud in Australia, and in Illinois at Arlington International Racecourse. He currently serves as board chairman of Kentucky Equine Education Project and is a member of the Breeders' Cup.

Jones is vice president of Airdrie Stud and works daily with Airdrie's managerial team and staff to help ensure that Airdrie's legacy will always be that of a farm that does right by its people, horses, and clients—a reputation earned by his parents, Brereton and Libby Jones, over the past 50 years. Airdrie is a consignor to the Keeneland sales and stands such stallions as Cairo Prince, Collected, and Complexity. A Breeders' Cup board director since 2011, Jones served on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission from 2016-20 and is a member of the board of trustees for the Markey Cancer Foundation.

Roth races horses under her family's LNJ Foxwoods, which was founded in 2012 after years of her following racing as a fan. Along with her parents, Larry and Nanci Roth, she has campaigned two-time

champion Covfefe, 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Country House as co-owner, and grade 1 winners Nickname and Constellation. Roth is a member of the Breeders' Cup and The Jockey Club and serves on the board of directors for Thoroughbred Charities of America. Because advocacy for horse welfare is integral to the stable, LNJ Foxwoods established the Horses First Fund through the TCA and received the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award in 2019. BH

SHEDARESTHEDEVIL TO BE OFFERED AT FASIG-TIPTON NOVEMBERBy BloodHorse Staff

Shedaresthedevil, the 2020 Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner and a current leader in the

distaff division, will be offered at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select breeding stock sale in Lexington Nov. 9. Hunter Valley Farm will consign the 4-year-old daughter of Daredevil on behalf of owners Qatar Racing, Flurry Racing Stables, and Big Aut Farms.

A graded stakes performer each year from 2 to 4, Shedaresthedevil is a three-time grade 1 winner and seven-time graded stakes winner with current earnings of $2,291,458. Last year at 3, she defeated the best of her generation to win the 146th Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in 1:48.28, the fastest time for 1 1/8 miles in the race's history. That classic win highlighted an outstanding 3-year-old season that included five graded stakes wins or placings, resulting in her being named an Eclipse finalist for the 3-year-old filly division.

This year at 4, Shedaresthedevil has been nothing short of dominant, winning four of five starts. She began the year with a victory in the Azeri Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park and then took the La Troienne Stakes Presented by Twinspires.com (G1) at Churchill Downs. Following a third in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, she traveled cross country to Del Mar, where she cruised to her third grade 1 victory in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (G1). Most recently she captured the Sept. 18 Locust Grove Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, where she is unbeaten in five starts, and will now be pointed for the Nov. 6 Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar, for which she is expected to be one of the favorites.

"Very rarely does a multiple grade 1 winner and classic winner, in the best form of her career, come to public auction," said consignor Fergus Galvin of Hunter Valley Farm. "She is a remarkable talent, and at just 4 years old, can provide her next owner with a world-class racemare to campaign on the sport's biggest and brightest stages."

Shedaresthedevil was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm out of the multiple graded stakes-producing Congrats mare Starship Warpspeed.

She is a half sister to Mojovation (by Quality Road), who placed in the 2017 Futurity Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park. Her immediate family includes grade 2 winner and multiple grade 1-placed Crafty C. T. and traces back to the prolific producer Mumtaz, ancestress of nearly 70 stakes winners and 27 graded stakes winners. These include North American and European group 1 winners Hernando, Palace Music, Johann Quatz, and Prize Spot.

"Shedaresthedevil showed talent from the start. A debut winner at 2, she progressed to win grade 1 races at 3 and 4," said her trainer Brad Cox. "She's a tremendous filly who is as sound and consistent as a racehorse could be."

Boyd Browning Jr., president and CEO of Fasig-Tipton, added, "Buyers will have an opportunity to purchase one of the finest fillies in the world with unlimited potential both as a racehorse and a broodmare—and she could very well have a significant update from the Breeders' Cup."

Shedaresthedevil first sold as a weanling for $100,000 to Big Cuse Bloodstock when consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency at the 2017 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. She won her debut for Glencrest Farm before Qatar Racing joined the ownership. Qatar Racing stayed in on the filly after she sold to Flurry Racing Stables for $280,000 out of Hunter Valley's consignment to the 2019 Keeneland November sale. BH

CINCO CHARLIE TO LEADEM FARM IN TEXAS FOR 2022By BloodHorse Staff

Grade 3 winner and promising young sire Cinco Charlie (by Indian Charlie) has been purchased

by Bob and Tyree Wolesensky's Leadem Farm and will relocate there for the 2022 breeding season. Jay Goodwin orchestrated the deal.

"Texas racing is thriving and the breeding business is coming back," said Goodwin. "Bob and Tyree approached me about finding a stallion that would fit Texas and I don't think we could have found a better one. Cinco Charlie was a brilliantly fast 2-year-old who won the Bashford Manor (G3), was owned by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, and trained by Steve Asmussen, Texas Hall of Famers.

This horse is Texas through and through. Cinco Charlie had the speed and precocity that Texas breeders want. Leadem Farm is an absolutely beautiful operation in the heart of Texas horse country and I'm sure that Cinco Charlie will have a long and successful career there. I want to thank Spendthrift Farm, particularly Eric Gustavson, Ned Toffey, Mark Toothaker, and Bill Heiligbrodt for helping this transaction take place."

Cinco Charlie won eight of 18 starts for earnings of $608,920. He was particularly impressive at 2, winning five of his eight starts. Cinco Charlie stood his first five seasons at Spendthrift Farm and currently sits in the top 30 on the second-crop sire list. His top runners include the stakes winner Huntsinger and graded stakes-placed Five Pics Please. BH

GULFSTREAM DEBUTS ITS TAPETA WITH FOUR RACES SEPT. 30By BloodHorse Staff

Rain or shine, racing on Gulfstream Park's synthetic Tapeta course will debut

Sept. 30, when four races on an eight-race program will be contested over the newly constructed all-weather oval. The Tapeta surface takes the place of what had been the outer portion of Gulfstream's turf course.

A $60,000 maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies on Tapeta will be featured in race 5. A field of nine fillies will contest the 5 1/2-furlong sprint, including Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Alarm Clock, a debuting Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of Not This Time.

Saffie Joseph Jr., who ran away with Gulfstream Park's spring/summer meet title, will saddle All In Line Stables' Strategy Queen, who is coming off a vastly improved second-place performance on dirt in her second start. The daughter of Fed Biz is a half sister to the connections' Merseyside, who was third on dirt in the May 29 Musical Romance Stakes at Gulfstream, as well as Sunday Express (trained by Teresa Connelly), who broke her maiden on Presque Isle Downs' Tapeta surface in 2019.

"We figured she'll handle it and we'd give it a try," Joseph said. "I think it's a good added track to have, especially in the summer when it rains a lot. If you have a turf horse, some of them just can't run on the dirt. This is going to allow you to run most of them—although not all of them like it. At the beginning, any off-the-turf race, I'm not going to scratch any horse at least until they run on it."

Race 1, a claiming race for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles running for a tag of $12,500 or $10,000, will christen the all-weather course on Gulfstream's Thursday's opening-day card for the fall meet. Race 3 will feature 2-year-old maiden claiming fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs on the Tapeta.

A strong field of seven turf performers has been assembled for race 7, a mile-and-70-yard starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up that will also be run

on the Tapeta track. The turf course is undergoing renovation in advance of the 2021-22 Championship Meet and won't be in service during the fall meet.

All distances over the Tapeta on Thursday are contested at "about" distances.

In race 7, Ron Spatz-trained Light Fury, who has found a home on turf after lingering in the bottom maiden claiming ranks on dirt, will take on Eddie Plesa Jr.-trained Vow Me Now, a stakes winner on turf who is coming off a starter allowance win.

"It's an experiment," said Spatz. "As a trainer, I have no idea if he'll like it. I don't know how his form will transfer. This is a horse that got on grass and took off—he didn't finish before, and now he finishes and has a great record."

Gulfstream Park will be become the first North American racing facility to conduct racing on dirt, turf, and all-weather surfaces when it begins its Championship Meet in December. The all-weather surface, positioned between the turf and the dirt tracks, will provide a measure of relief to the turf course while offering a varied racing program for horses of all abilities. BH

OWNER DURST DIES AT 89By BloodHorse Staff

Murray Durst, the colorful co-owner of the graded stakes winner and one-time favorite for the 1998

Kentucky Derby (G1) Lil's Lad, passed away Sept. 27 at the age of 89.

Durst, born in Queens, N.Y., in 1932, was the son of Austrian and Polish-Jewish immigrants who became founder and CEO of companies engaged in medical insurance fraud detection. He purchased Lil's Lad at the 1996 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $160,000 from the consignment of Longfield Farm, agent, before selling interests to William Farish and Centennial Farm. Lil's Lad was second in the 1997 Moet Champagne Stakes (G1) and was favored in the 1998 Florida Derby (G1) after easily winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) over Coronado's Quest. But Lil's Lad was disqualified from first and placed second in the Florida Derby for bumping Cape Town down the stretch.

After finishing second to Halory Hunter in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2), Lil's Lad was withdrawn from the Triple Crown three weeks before the Kentucky Derby due to a chip in his left front ankle.

Durst, who arrived at Gulfstream Park on race days in a purple, limited edition Indianapolis 500 Corvette, ran horses in his name and with his wife, Lillian.

Services will be held Friday, Oct. 1, at 10:30 a.m. ET at Sharon Gardens, 273 Lakeview Ave., Valhalla, N.Y. BH

LUXEMBOURG BROTHER HIGHLIGHTS GOFFS ORBY SALE DAY TWOBy Aisling Crowe/Racing Post

If the first session of the Goffs Orby Sale was a welcome return to form,

then the Sept. 29 second session provided confirmation that Ireland's national yearling sale is right back where it belongs.

As a frenetic day of trading drew to a close Wednesday, all the major indications pointed to a successful rebound to 2019, driven by a deep pool of international buyers who flocked to Goffs in their droves.

However, the most expensive colt of the sale harked back to bygone days as the names of Magnier and Sangster were once again linked with the most sought after blue-blooded stallion prospect on offer as M.V. Magnier bought a Camelot colt bred by Ben and Lucy Sangster out of the Danehill Dancer mare Attire.

Offered by The Castlebridge Consignment, he brought a winning bid of €1.2 million (US$1,402,050) from Magnier, in his now customary position in the back ring.

He resembles his great-grandsire Sadler's Wells in looks but it was recent history which proved most pertinent as he is a full brother to none other than Luxembourg, who pushed his way to the head of ante-post Cazoo Derby (G1) markets with ease when winning the Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes (G2) at the Curragh last Saturday for the Ballydoyle team.

"I am delighted for Ben and Lucy Sangster," remarked the successful purchaser. "They and their family have been great supporters of ours for a long, long time and it is a great result for them.

"It looks like Luxembourg could be something out of the ordinary. I was speaking to Seamus Heffernan and he said he couldn't believe how good he was last weekend. Camelot is having a good year again; this colt is a very nice horse and let's hope he is a good one."

Lot 366 was one of seven purchases by Magnier by that point of the event, including the €1.5 million ($1,755,800) sales-topping Galileo filly out of grade 1 winner Nickname (Lot 152), as well as colts by Wootton Bassett, Churchill, Saxon Warrior, No Nay Never, and Siyouni, the last-named in partnership with Phil Antonacci.

McPeek Adds to Shopping ListA long list of American names were found in the

buyers' column over the two days and Kenny McPeek made his first visit to Goffs a memorable one, signing for a quartet of yearlings to make the journey back across the Atlantic Ocean.

As well as Tuesday's Galileo colt, he also signed for fillies by Camelot and Expert Eye on Wednesday and the sale's most expensive offering by Frankel.

Lot 377 was bred by Eddie and Eimear Irwin at their Marlhill House Stud, outside Cashel, and is a full brother to Old Glory, who brought €1.6 million ($1,887,200) at the 2017 Orby Sale. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, he was group 3- and listed-placed at 2 and listed-placed over a mile at 3.

He is also a three-parts brother to Giuseppe Piazzi, Scandinavia's champion older horse in 2017, and is a half brother to Adjusted, a group 2 winner in Australia.

Dam Belesta is a winning Xaar half sister to In Clover, the group 3-winning dam of three group 1 winners.

The striking chestnut, who has already been nicknamed Freckles by McPeek, will race for a partnership that at present includes Swiss Skydiver's owner Peter Callahan and Paul Fireman, whose Fern Circle Stables co-owns this season's Stonestreet Lexington Stakes (G3) winner King Fury.

It is that son of Curlin whom McPeek had in mind when thinking of the €900,000 ($1,051,540) colt's future.

"They are wonderful clients (Fireman and Callahan) and always have been," McPeek said.

"These are the kind of horses you can play at an extremely high level and if he does that he is a stallion prospect. We are working through King Fury and this is that kind of horse too. I am very fortunate; I reached out to both of them this morning and they were ready to play."

It is the first time that McPeek will condition a son of Frankel, and he is relishing the prospect of training both him and the Galileo colt, adding: "We don't get that many opportunities for Frankels and Galileos over in the U.S. so if you can win a graded stakes or group race with these well-related horses, we all know where they end up, and that residual value is there if they are that talented. Fingers crossed all goes right for them."

Dream Result for GalbertstownFrankel was also responsible for the day's most

expensive filly, with his Orby average weighing in at €550,000 ($642,605). Lot 254 is a stunning filly who was bred by John Hayes out of the Indian Ridge mare Sophie Germain, making her a half sister to the Lanwades Stud Ridgewood Pearl Stakes (G2) and listed Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Cairn Rouge Stakes winner Creggs Pipes.

Creggs Pipes was bred and raced by Hayes and his wife, Una, and her Sea The Stars yearling filly later sold for €180,000 ($210,307) to the Tsui family.

The Frankel filly was consigned by Pa Doyle's Galbertstown Stud, and the consignor reflected on his best day at a yearling sale.

"I consign all their yearlings for sale, they are wonderful owners, they have gone into it big, and they have been well-rewarded," said Doyle, who believes the filly could be a serious contender for classic honors in 2023.

"Without doubt it is the best sale we've had, and she is the best filly we have ever produced for the sale. She came up here last Friday and from day one she has never put a foot wrong.

"She went down very well. She is a very elegant filly and one that I think we are going to hear a lot more from. She is a proper queen and she could be one to come around Tattenham Corner."

"She is a fabulous filly and was my pick of the whole sale physically," he said. "Frankel is the best sire in the world right now and she's a big filly, a great mover with lovely bone.

"She has everything you want in a racehorse and we are really excited about her. The lads did a great job prepping her for the sale."

Al Shira'aa recently acquired Meadow Court Stud in Kildare and the team is busy searching for fillies with the right attributes to one day retire to the farm, after earning themselves some success on the track.

Two in that mold were the day-one purchases of the half sisters to this year's QIPCO One and Two Thousand Guineas (both G1) winners Mother Earth and Poetic Flare for a total of €550,000, and Lalor elaborated on what it was about them that made them the perfect fit for their enterprise.

"Obviously the two fillies yesterday are by unproven stallions but, for me, anything by Scat Daddy (Sioux Nation) is worth taking a shot on and the one thing about those two horses—Poetic Flare and Mother Earth—they have run in six or seven group 1 races and are always there on the board," he said.

"There are other horses in the families that have proven themselves as tough and consistent, and they are tough, hard and sound families. Obviously there is a risk with the sires, but we think they are worth it."

Facts and FiguresThe clearance rate for the 2021 Orby sale was an

impressive 91%, with 372 of 409 lots finding a buyer. The figure last year was 80%, with 311 horses sold of 389 offered.

The 2020 sale had been held in Doncaster, due to COVID-19 difficulties, and conducted in sterling, and for ease of comparison Goffs converted last year's figures into euros.

This year's aggregate was €40,581,500 ($47,414,300), a 74% increase on the 2020 tally of €23,299,245, while the average was up 46% at €109,090 ($127,458), with the median rising 44% to €75,000 ($87,628).

DRAMATIC INCREASE IN SHADWELL'S TATTERSALLS SALE DRAFTBy Peter Scargill/Racing Post

More than 150 horses owned by the late Hamdan Al Maktoum's

Shadwell Estates have been cataloged for next month's Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale, an increase of 59% on last year's figure and 120% higher than in 2019.

The 154 horses were among 1,577 lots listed in the sale, for which the catalog was released on Sept. 29, providing the first indication of the "substantial" number of horses Shadwell plans to sell in the coming months as part of global reorganization of the breeding and racing empire.

Shadwell announced this month plans to scale back the size of its operation, focusing instead on "quality and competition at the highest level of the sport," and many of the horses selling next month are listed as either being unraced or lightly raced, with 2020 bet365 Hackwood Stakes (G3) winner Tabdeed the standout racecourse performer for Sheikh Hamdan due to go under the hammer.

More than 100 Shadwell-owned horses have been sold this year at auction, while a number of

broodmares and breeding prospects are expected to be offered at the sales in the coming months.

Alongside Shadwell's draft, horses owned by Godolphin, Juddmonte, and Coolmore feature in the catalog, with Coolmore entering Cazoo St. Leger third (G1) and fourth The Mediterranean and Interpretation,

respectively, plus last year's Lexus Melbourne Cup (G1) second Tiger Moth.

Windsor Castle winner Chipotle, the Queen's progressive handicapper Chalk Stream, and group 1-placed Grocer Jack are other lots to stand out in a sale that Australian group 1 winner Zaaki was sourced from in 2020.

Edmond Mahony, Tattersalls chairman, said: "The unique

diversity of the sale is the key to its enduring appeal to both domestic and international buyers.

"This year's catalog has all the ingredients to appeal to the customary global audience, including the significant, high-class consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms, and Shadwell Estates."

The Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale takes place from Oct. 25-28, with the catalog available to view online.

LOOKING BACK

JUVENILE FILLY MOCCASIN VOTED 1965 HORSE OF THE YEARBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

A picture-perfect midsummer day at Saratoga proved a prescient setting for the debut of a

picture-perfect blaze-faced 2-year-old chestnut filly with three fleet stocking feet. Bred and owned by Claiborne Farm, Moccasin, before the end of her juvenile year constructed a record as pristine as the day and earn an honor that no other North American juvenile filly has equaled.

The fourth race on the fifth day of the 1965 Saratoga meet found 12 fillies matching strides over 5 1/2 furlongs. One of two first-time starters in the field, the Harry Trotsek-trained filly was overlooked by bettors at 7-1, despite a grade 1 pedigree. A Kentucky-bred daughter of Nantallah and the Gold Bridge mare Rough Shod II, Moccasin claimed 1961 champion 2-year-old male Ridan and the valuable handicapper Lt. Stevens as full brothers.

With jockey Larry Adams in the saddle, Moccasin increased her advantage at every port of call and crossed the wire eight lengths clear of the challengers.

Eleven days later, only the odds had changed as Moccasin glided to an eight-length score at 3-10. Third-time out was her first-time stakes, and Moccasin, again the 3-10 choice, handled the transition to more experienced company with the savoir faire of a veteran in Saratoga's Spinaway Stakes, a $50,000 event over six furlongs. Four lengths ahead at the top of the stretch, she won by 3 1/2, eased up.

A change of venue from upstate New York to the Big Apple fazed her not one bit. Tackling the co-largest field to date—11 other juvenile fillies—in the Matron Stakes at Aqueduct, the Claiborne lass lived up to 4-10 favoritism, and delivered her rivals a six-length view of her disappearing muscular rump as she crossed the finish.

A return visit to her home state turned into a working vacation as she tested the waters of farther distances: 6 1/2 furlongs in the Greentree Purse at Keeneland at 1-10 stretched her competitiveness. Seventh and last after a sluggish start, she improved to fourth with two furlongs remaining and strode home by three.

The Alcibiades Stakes—at about seven furlongs—one week later found just three other fillies willing to test their mettle against her reputation. Keeneland held the event with no wagering and the fans cheered the Amazonian warrior through ever-increasing distances: 1 1/2 after a half; four after three-quarters; eight at the stretch call; and a country-mile 15 at the wire.

In the mid 1960s, Laurel hosted a pair of valuable races for juveniles—the 1 1/16-mile Selima for fillies and the Futurity. Although they are still on the Laurel racing calendar and will be run Oct. 2, they have withered from the grand events they once were. But that is now. In Moccasin's reign, the Selima was worth a hefty $50,000. With that much money on the line, any racing fan would have thought that there would be fillies aplenty. Yet, so dominating had Moccasin been that just four showed up, and Laurel not only ran the race with no wagering but as an exhibition between races.

More than 16,000 racing fans turned out to witness another Moccasin tour de force. She hardly broke a sweat in landing a five-length win and her seventh consecutive victory.

The last race on her juvenile agenda, the Gardenia Stakes at Garden State, rinsed and repeated the previous results: eight for eight by an average of 6.3 lengths, and earnings of $319,731.

Year-end honors gave Moccasin the 2-year-old filly championship. And in an era before polls had been codified into one, she was voted Horse of the Year by the Thoroughbred Racing Association and the Turf and Sports Digest. Triangle Publications awarded the honor to Roman Brother. BH
