The first-ever Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo Demo Day was held Wednesday outside the Indiana Convention Center. Terydon Inc. teamed up with Hammelman Corp. for a demonstration of a preci-sion ultra-high pressure cut with the Jack Track Cutting System. Pressure was supplied by a Hammelmann pump featuring the dynamic plunger seal system, which eliminates the use of high-pressure packing. Perma-Liner Industries, GapVax and NozzTeq also demonstrated products.

MEET a contractor

Company: Busy Bee Septic Systems

Location: Pikeville, Ky.

(20 miles from the Virginia/West Virginia border)Services my company provides: Septic pumping, portable restroom rental and service, manufacture of concrete septic tanks, installation of residential onsite systems.

Source of pride in my business: We’ve been in this business since 1975. As a former government environmentalist, I take pride in providing great systems that are compliant with all regulations.History with the Expo: We’ve been to 31 out of 33 expos. We never miss the Expo — we consider it a mini vacation every year. We still see some of the first people we met at the Expo all those years ago.Why I attend the Expo: There’s always something new every year. We take advan-tage of the continuing education credit programs, and have gathered a lot of business management tools. We also do quite a bit of shopping for ideas and new products. Many vendors offer special show discounts and deals that we like to take advantage of. This year we’re looking at a new tank for our truck, and other odds and ends.Something people wouldn’t know about me: We’ve gone to Mexico for mission work through our church for the last 25 years. We’ve helped build churches, schools, children’s homes and much more. We learn so much about their culture, and they learn a lot about us, too. The church has another trip coming up in May that, if business allows, we’d love to be a part of. If and when I do decide to retire, mission work is something I’d love to be much more involved in.

The 2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo wraps up today, but the knowledge and insight gained this week in Indianapolis will endure.

That’s what makes these four days so valuable. It’s not just a vacation – although it has been a fun week – it’s an opportunity to grow as a tradesman and businessman and to parlay that growth into a stronger business. Long after the exhibitors have rolled out of Indy and you’re back at work, the lessons learned at the Expo will remain.

This show has been dedicated to the advancement of waste-water treatment and handling along with the evolution of sewer and drain cleaning and the development of our industries for 33 years. This show has helped many achieve their goals, build their businesses, improve services and make their daily jobs easier.

Skills and techniques learned in Education Day seminars, the insight gained at the Roundtable Discussions and the general perspective gleaned from conversations with industry peers will all prove invaluable as you move forward. We hope you’re able to use what you’ve learned over these four days in Indy as build-ing blocks to a stronger business and a better future.

COLE Publishing has always used the annual Expo to show our appreciation for the work you do, day in and day out. Though often overlooked by others, we understand what you do is vital to the individuals and communities you serve.

Thanks for traveling to Indy and making it another great show. We hope you enjoyed yourselves. You deserve it.

See you next year.

You make the annual pilgrimage to the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo for a variety of reasons … surely to see the latest equipment the industry has to offer and to learn the latest technologies through Education Day seminars.

Effective networking with your industry colleagues is an-other key to making the most of your visit to the 2013 Pumper & Cleaner Expo in Indianapolis. Taking part in the Breakfast Roundtable discussions — set for 8 to 10 a.m. Today, Feb. 28 — is the best way to accomplish that goal.

Just ask Mike Stephens, of SCS Stephens LLC in Haslett, Mich., who participated in a Roundtable discussion about main-tenance contracts for wastewater treatment systems at the 2012 Expo. He’ll tell you he came away with practical advice from fellow service providers who work across the country.

“I was able to exchange maintenance agreements with other contractors from the Roundtable discussion. We showed each other what we use for contracts and that was really beneficial,’’ Stephens says. “If somebody else is doing something that’s work-ing, why do we have to reinvent the wheel? If someone’s already drafted a really good service contract and good marketing — or a clever idea in another state — why not use it?’’

Stephens and other contractors at his table explored some of the ideas they’ve used to promote maintenance contracts among their customers. Then they exchanged business cards and delved deeper into the topic in the weeks following the Expo. Eventu-ally they were faxing their agreements to each other for critique, looking for ways to improve the documents.

“Different people have different perspectives,” he says. “I enjoyed being able to talk to companies that were maintaining twice as many systems as I do and those doing a smaller num-ber. It was a really good experience.”

Maintenance contracts were one of many timely business topics explored at the 2012 Roundtable discussions. And many more are in the works for 2013. After grabbing a buffet break-

fast, participants will choose a topic and start networking. You are invited to move from table to table to discuss a host of topics ranging from providing services to social media marketing. Hot topics Dave Gustafson, a University of Minnesota Extension Service engineer and regular speaker at Pumper & Cleaner Expo semi-nars, led a 2012 Roundtable that veered into a fascinating hot topic: hydrogen sulfide deterioration in concrete tanks.

The discussion wasn’t what Gustafson expected, but it brought to light valuable information about an issue that helped inform his table participants from California, Ohio, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

“Part of the value of the Roundtable discussions is trying to deal with topics that contractors are working on right now. What are the issues we’re wrestling with today?” he says. “I was able to talk to contractors about what they were seeing and interpret it from the research standpoint.”

Pinpointing important trends in service and maintenance helps participating contractors keep pace with an evolving industry, Gustafson says. As technologies to treat and transport wastewater change and improve, a well-informed contractor will provide better customer service and become a more effective steward of the environment, he says. And Gustafson says the networking efforts he begins at the Expo Roundtables continue throughout the year, adding tremendous value to his work and, he hopes, to the advancement of the contractors he’s befriended.

Gustafson and other industry educators take part in the Roundtables as moderators, keeping the discussions on topic and adding their expertise wherever possible. As a moderator, Gustafson has a message for all Expo attendees considering taking part in the Roundtables in 2013: The more the merrier.

“Sometimes guys are worried they’re not going to have any-thing to say. But everyone has a perspective. They’ve all been involved in the industry, so all of them have something to share.”

Indianapolis has a rich sporting history, from the Indy 500 and the evolution of auto racing to Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium, just across the parking lot from the Expo. If you’re a sports fan, Indy has plenty of history to share.

College spirit You can learn a great deal about how to win in business from the champions in the world of college sports. The NCAA Hall of Champions in Indianapolis shares the experience of top college athletes in some 23 events.

Located just four blocks from the Convention Center at 700 W. Washington St., the Hall of Champions has 25,000 square feet of exhibits, including a display of a 1930s-era gymnasium. In theater video presentations, young champions share their experiences and thoughts on life as a student-athlete. A March Madness theater provides an intimate look inside the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments.

The Hall also gives you firsthand athletic experiences, with activities like a downhill skiing simulator and video games in which you throw real balls at moving targets. Visit www.ncaa-hallofchampions.com.

Around the track Auto racing fans can relive the entire history of what is called “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

The museum, five miles northwest of downtown Indianapolis on the speedway grounds, houses one of the world’s largest col-lection of race cars, including more than 30 Indy 500 winners. They include:

• The Marmon Wasp, which won the first Indy 500 in 1911 with Ray Harroun at the wheel • The four cars driven to victory by A.J. Foyt Jr. • The Duesenberg #12 Murphy Special, the only car ever to win both the Indianapolis 500 (1922) and the French Grand Prix at Le Mans (1921)

The Borg-Warner Trophy, which honors the winner of each Indianapolis 500, is also on display. Visitors also can see the equipment and methods used to time and score the race. A com-puter presentation explains the progress through the years. To feel the excitement of the race, you can visit the 48-seat Tony Hulman Theater, which offers 20 minutes of rare historic footage and Indianapolis 500 highlights.

Built as a test track for local automakers, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909. Two years later, the 2.5-mile oval hosted its first 500-mile race. The original Hall of Fame Mu-seum was built in 1956. In 1987, the museum and speedway grounds were honored with the designation of National Historic Landmark.

The museum will be open daily during the Pumper & Cleaner Expo. Bus tours around the racetrack are available except when the track is in use for testing or racing. Visit www.indianapolis-motorspeedway.com/about/35204-Museum.

The art of athletics We watch sports on TV or from the stands, but nothing captures its essence quite like artwork. Art captures emotion: the anxiety of competition, the desire to win, the struggle to maintain resolve in the face of overwhelming odds, pain and fatigue.

For more than 50 years, the National Art Museum of Sport in downtown Indianapolis has collected more than 800 pieces showcasing the heroes and heroines of basket-ball, boxing, golf, baseball, tennis – more than 40 sports in all. Through permanent and special exhibits, the collection evokes the excitement and variety of the sporting life. The museum’s collection includes works by Winslow Homer, George Bellows, LeRoy Neiman and Ogden Pleissner. Sports legends represented include Johnny Unitas, Joe Louis, Michael Jordan and Bob Cousy. The museum also includes a few paintings created by celebrities, such as Muham-mad Ali.

The collection is exhibited in the public spaces of University Place Conference Center & Hotel on the downtown campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Visit www.namos.iupui.edu.

A different way to bowl If you’re in the mood for something more interactive, drop by the Fountain Square Theatre, just a two-minute cab ride from downtown Indianapolis at the intersection of Virginia Avenue at Shelby and Prospect streets, the first commercial historic district in Indiana. Its buildings span more than a century from 1871 to the present.

Extensively renovated starting in 1993, the building houses entertainment and events in the Fountain Square Theatre, art galleries and studios, two restaurants, seasonal rooftop dining, a cocktail bar, and duckpin bowling in either of two vintage alleys. Duckpin bowling was born in Baltimore in 1900 and was a favorite of Babe Ruth. It uses smaller balls and pins and has different rules. The Action Duckpin Bowl has been restored with authentic 1930s vintage bowling equipment and eight lanes. A café area seats up to 120 guests, and surrounding windows give a great view of downtown.

The Atomic Bowl Duckpin, in the building’s basement, has seven lanes with authentic 1950s and 1960s bowling equip-ment, along with displays of mid-century bowling collectibles. A café seats up to 90 guests. Visit www.fountainsquareindy.com.

The COLE Publishing editorial staff is in the building and looking forward to meeting you. Throughout the run of the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International, we will be at your disposal to answer questions, learn about your busi-ness, and discuss story ideas.

Ted Rulseh, editor of Treatment Plant Operator (TPO) and Water System Operator (WSO); Jim Kneiszel, editor of Pumper, Portable Restroom Operator (PRO) and Onsite Installer; Luke Laggis, editor of Cleaner, Municipal Sewer & Water (MSW) and Gas, Oil & Mining Contractor (GOMC); and Briana Jones, COLE’s digital editor, will be in the class-rooms, on the floor and stationed at the COLE Publishing editors’ booth next to registration outside the main exhibit hall doors. Please stop by and share your opinions and concerns on the issues your industry is facing.

It’s easy to connect with us. You can flag us down on the Expo floor or visit the editors’ booth. In addition, you can reach any of us by cellphone at the numbers provided below.

As an added bonus, if you stop by the editors’ booth, we’ll enter you in a daily drawing for two free passes and a two-night hotel stay for next year’s Expo. You can also get a photo and press release with your own company information to send to your local publications. It’s a quick, free and easy way to let your customers know you’re doing what it takes to stay on top of the latest industry trends and technology.

We look forward to meeting you. Enjoy the show.

There’s a lot to see and do at the Pumper & Cleaner Envi-ronmental Expo but it’s not always easy to get it all in. To make it easier on attendees, COLE videographer Paul Thompson and I explore the show, compiling video footage for the Expo website. The videos are all in one spot, so you can check out all the happenings (and make sure you don’t miss anything) at www.pumpershow.com.

We start with a video introducing this year’s show and venue, and then get right into Education Day. We interview the seminar leaders and the folks who take the classes. So be ready; we might be waiting outside your seminar to get your opinion on the class you attended.

Videos also include interviews with exhibitors on the floor. Exhibitor staff members explain new products they are intro-ducing at the Expo, along with how the products work and how they benefit the customer. These products include drain cleaning solutions, inspection cameras, vacuum trucks, septic tanks and a whole lot more. Keep an eye on the website; we might feature an item you can’t miss.

We also feature other events at the Expo, including the Roundtable Discussion and Breakfast, which takes place from 8 to 10 a.m. today, Feb. 28. We interview visitors about what they learned at the breakfast discussion and how it will impact the way they run their businesses, so you can learn from them even if you weren’t able to attend.

If you see us walking around the show floor, stop us and tell us about your Expo experience.

The National Association of Wastewater Technicians presented its major annual awards at a breakfast meeting at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International Wednesday. The group also installed its new slate of officers for 2013.

NAWT leaders and Bob Kendall of COLE Publishing, presented the Ralph Macchio Lifetime Achievement Award to Ray Erb, the education coordinator for the Pennsylvania Septage Management Association and owner of Thomas H. Erb & Sons Inc, Lilitz, Pa. Erb was instrumental in develop-ing an inspection program for the PSMA and the successful vacuum truck training program adopted by NAWT. He has been involved in the state and national associations for 27 years.

Erb, who has worked in his family’s pumping and inspection business for 43 years, worked with Penn State University to develop guidelines for inspections, which eventually became guidelines contractors use. The state association created the Ray Erb Leadership Award in 2006 in his honor and he was the first winner. Erb said he was proud and humbled to win the award. “As you give to your association, you get more than what you give in,’’ he said.

Kit Rosefield, education coordinator for the California Onsite Wastewater Association, was presented with

NAWT’s Excellence in Service Award. Rosefield was credited with promoting educational programs nationwide and has been involved in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Memorandum of Understanding project.

Rosefield was a treatment plant operator in 1982 and later started a company specializing in onsite system operations and maintenance work. He later sold the company and he and his wife, Evelyn, are the management team for COWA.

“We’re constantly improving our training materials with fresh ideas. We always want it to move faster, but there’s a lot of

good going on,’’ he said.

Outgoing NAWT president Tom Frank was presented with a plaque of appreciation for his service. An award was also to be given to past president Tim Frank, who was not at the meeting. Elizabeth Rachlin was given the William Hapchuk Memorial Scholarship.

Officers were also elected to the NAWT board. They are Jeff Rachlin of Penn-sylvania, president; Jamie Miller of Virginia, vice president; Ralph Macchio of New York, treasurer; and Tom Ferrero of Pennsylvania, secretary. n
