TOAST OF NEW YORK ON ANOTHER US ADVENTUREBy Jon Lees/Racing Post

Toast of New York is set to em-bark on an American adven-

ture next month that could climax in another tilt at the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), the race he came so close to landing at Santa Anita Park in 2014.

The 7-year-old has been gelded since his surprise return to training after a three-year absence, which culminated in his January appearance in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1), where he finished a distant last behind champion Gun Runner.

His trainer, Jamie Osborne, had been considering the Aug. 4 Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course for his stable star's next run, but he will instead see if he can find a lower-profile opportunity during the New York track's July 20-Sept. 3 meet as a starting point.

In a 10-race career, Toast of New York has earned $3,009,014 in prize-money thanks to a victory in the 2014 UAE Derby Sponsored By The Saeed &

Mohammed Al Naboodah Group (G2) and second-place finishes in the TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at Del Mar and the Breeders' Cup Classic, in which he was beaten a nose by Bayern.

After he suffered a tendon injury the following season, he spent a year at stud in Qatar until he was returned to training with Osborne by owners Al Shaqab Racing.

"Toast of New York has been gelded, which was as much to do with difficulties with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as he had been a stallion who had covered horses in the past, which made it incredibly complicated to take him over for any length of time.

"He would either have needed to have covered some mares in America before waiting a month, or would require 24-hour security.

"We had 24-hour security in Florida, but we were only there a week, but for this trip we're trying to stay months rather than days, so the cost would have been ridiculous.

"We had been considering gelding anyway, and this was the tipping point.

"We hope we end up with a horse we can have some fun with, campaigned at a decent level over the next few years with none of the commercial pressures associated with being a stallion."

Osborne continued: "The plan is to go to the States in August, and if all goes well, he'll stay there through August, September, and October, and if our route is fruitful, potentially be at Churchill Downs for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

"If we have to lower our sights, then we will, as there are more options out there. We could start him low-key. He won't be ready in time for the Whitney, and I'd like to see if we can get a bit of progression by starting a bit lower.

"There will be conditions races he'll be eligible for. It could be at Saratoga, but he'll be based East Coast anyway."

There had been high hopes Toast of New York could threaten Gun Runner in the Pegasus at Gulfstream Park after returning from 1,130 days off the track to land a conditions race at Lingfield, but he was soon struggling and crossed the line nearly 50 lengths behind the impressive winner.

Osborne reflected: "To coin a World Cup phrase, we were shooting from the halfway line, really. Occasionally they go in, more often than not they don't.

"It was a sporting attempt, and at that time it seemed to fit into where we were going. I did slightly regret it a bit afterward, but it's water under the bridge.

"He's in a good place at the moment and ready to have a decent campaign. Sheikh Joaan and the Al Shaqab team have been fantastically supportive of my plans, and like me are looking forward to this further adventure with him."

JOCKEYS' GUILD, NYTHA ANNOUNCE MOUNT FEE CHANGESBy BloodHorse Staff

The Jockeys' Guild and the New York Thoroughbred Horse-

men's Association have reached an agreement to increase the losing mount fees for jockeys at New York Racing Association tracks, it was announced July 11. It is the first change in the losing-mount fee schedule for riders on the NYRA circuit since 2008.

The new fee schedule, which lines up with the new NYRA purse distribution, will be launched for the Saratoga Race Course meet that opens July 20. NYRA purses are divided as follows: 55% for first, 20% for second, 12% for third, 6% for fourth, 4% for fifth and 3% divided from sixth through last.

"Through what were highly

constructive negotiations with the Guild, we were able to reach what we believe is an equitable arrangement for the NYRA riders," NYTHA president Joe Appelbaum said. "We all know the risks that the riders face on a daily basis, and we are fortunate to have such an elite jockey colony in New York.

"We are also pleased to announce that, as part of the deal, NYTHA will underscore our commitment to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. Since 2014, we have contributed $1 per mount, which has totaled around $17,000 a year. Going forward, we

will guarantee a $20,000 annual donation to the PDJF."

New York's horsemen also donate $5 per start to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, and NYTHA contributes $300,000 a year to the TAKE2 and TAKE THE LEAD Thoroughbred retirement programs. Starting with the 2018 Saratoga Meet, NYRA's riders will donate $1 per mount to the PDJF and $1 per mount to TAKE THE LEAD.

"I sincerely want to thank Joe Appelbaum, Terry Finley, Andy Belfiore, and the NYTHA Board for working in good faith on this agreement, as well as their support of the PDJF and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. The NYRA jockey colony truly appreciates their commitment," said Terry Meyocks, national manager of the Jockeys' Guild. BH

ELATE READY TO GET SEASON STARTED IN DELAWARE HANDICAPBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

The buzz that precedes most major racing events had plenty of places

to land the week of the 2017 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar.

There was Arrogate, the sport's all-time leading money earner, trying to cap his career on a high note. There was Gun Runner, his chestnut rival, looking every bit like the Horse of the Year he would become. There were precocious juveniles trying to show talent beyond their years. And yet, it was the dark bay filly from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott who managed to horde the majority of the pre-race hype. Everything about Elate's preparation heading into

last year's Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) was viewed as a tout. She was coming off consecutive grade 1 wins in blowout fashion and earning A+ reviews from clockers tracking her morning training. She went off as the favorite in a field with two established champions and two eventual year-end honorees, but when it came time to throw the hammer down, the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro left her connections puzzled as she crossed the wire fourth, never seriously threatening along the way.

"She almost won three grade 1s in a row," said Walker Hancock of Claiborne Farm, which bred and co-owns Elate along with Adele Dilschneider. "She got nosed out by Abel Tasman in I guess what you could say was a controversial Coaching Club American Oaks, and came back and ran huge in the Alabama, and then followed that effort up with arguably her best race of the year in the Beldame. I guess if you look back on it, maybe she was a little gutted from those three big performances in a row. I don't know.

"There are a bunch of variables you could maybe point to, but you know at the end of the day … she had a big end to her 3-year-old year, and hopefully she'll find her form and carry it forward this year."

An intended freshening was unexpectedly extended when Elate was hindered with a splint bone issue this winter. Finally ready to make her 4-year-old debut, the multiple grade 1 winner will start her 2018 campaign at the track that kicked off her stellar second-half run last year when she faces eight challengers July 14 in the $750,000 Delaware Handicap (G2) at Delaware Park.

Regard had been high for Elate since she broke her maiden first out at Aqueduct Racetrack in November 2016, but it wasn't until she went to Delaware last summer that the light bulb came on and turned white hot. After capturing the Light Hearted Stakes there by 5 1/2 lengths in June, she had many believing her to be the best dirt filly in the country with a series of outs that included a head loss to eventual champion Abel Tasman in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1)—one that elicited an inquiry after some alleged contact in late stretch—followed by clear victories in the Alabama Stakes (G1) and Beldame Stakes (G1).

That Elate marched into Del Mar with expectations that she would make balloting for divisional honors a formality was itself a remarkable comeback from her spring form. In her third start of the year and first grade 1 try, she was pulled up and vanned off in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland but was found to be OK physically in the aftermath.

"I remember after the Ashland when we were scratching our heads wondering if she was all right, (assistant trainer) Riley (Mott) saying, 'She's still going to win the Alabama,'" Hancock said. "So we knew they liked her. It was just a matter of time. She's a big filly, maybe she just took her time to grow into herself and come into herself. Maybe she just needed the confidence that she got in Delaware last year to get going."

Since getting over the splint bone issue, Elate has been working steadily since May 9, turning in nine timed moves at Saratoga Race Course—the site of her next big target should all go as hoped this weekend.

"Obviously, the Breeders' Cup Distaff is the year-end goal, but we've marked the (grade 1) Personal Ensign as being a main goal this year, too," Hancock said, referencing the race named for the Phipps

family's unbeaten champion. "(That race) is special to us, so it would be nice to win. That's the next logical spot assuming she runs well."

Elate will have to be on her game right out of the gate if she intends to get her 4-year-old campaign off to a victorious note.

Red Oak Stable's homebred Unbridled Mo has already played dragon slayer once this season. The Todd Pletcher-trained daughter of Uncle Mo defeated champion Unique Bella in the April 13 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park, cementing the ability she teased of when she won two grade 3 contests to close out her 2017 campaign.

Unbridled Mo enters the Delaware Handicap off a third-place finish to Abel Tasman in the June 9 Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park and will be stretching out to 1 1/4 miles for the first time Saturday.

Paul Reddam's graded stakes winner Mopotism is in from California for trainer Doug O'Neill after recently finishing third in the June 16 Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2) at Churchill Downs. The daughter of Uncle Mo opened her season with a win in the La Canada Stakes (G2) in January, an effort that snapped an eight-race losing skid for the bay filly.

"We were kind of hoping for a smaller field, but they all showed up to take her on," Hancock said of Elate. "She's actually going to have to be the best in order to win on Saturday." BH

UNTAMED DOMAIN AIMS FOR FIRST SEASON WIN IN KENT STAKESBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Grade 2 winner Untamed Domain will try to secure his first win of the season July 14, when he starts

at Delaware Park for the first time in the $200,000 Kent Stakes (G3T), a 1 1/8-mile turf race that has at-tracted nine 3-year-olds.

Untamed Domain has two graded stakes placings in four starts this season. The son of Animal Kingdom closed his juvenile season with a runner-up finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) at Del Mar, one start after a victory in the Summer Stakes (G2T) on the Woodbine turf.

This year, Untamed Domain finished third in the Dania Beach Stakes (G3T) on the Gulfstream Park turf and second in the American Turf Stakes presented by Ram Trucks (G2T) on the grass at Churchill Downs. He enters Saturday's test off a fourth-place finish in the June 2 Pennine Ridge Stakes (G3T) on the Belmont Park inner turf. The top two finishers of the Pennine Ridge—Catholic Boy and Analyze It—came back to again finish first and second, respectively, in the

Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T).Trained by Graham Motion, West Point

Thoroughbreds' Untamed Domain has turned in a pair of works—one on synthetic and one on turf—at the trainer's Fair Hill Training Center base.

With a field that features ample early speed, Untamed Domain figures to get an honest pace. He rallied from fifth to win the Summer, from 13th to finish second in the Juvenile Turf, and from 10th to finish second in the American Turf.

"We hope he'll get a chance to drop back and settle. The times he runs his best is when he's had the opportunity to do that," said West Point founder Terry Finley. "So we're hoping he has a shot to do that, but there are some really legitimate horses in the field that are on the improve in this spot."

Finley noted that Delaware is a short trip from the Fair Hill base.

"We were really tempted to take a crack at the Belmont Derby, but ultimately thought this would be the better spot overall," Finley said. "It looks like we made a good decision, but this is a very evenly matched field.

"He certainly acts like he's the same or better than last year, but he just hasn't put it all together. That's the thing about these turf horses. You look at the races, and the vast majority of times there are five lengths

that separate eight horses."Some of those horses include

Reddam Racing's Blame the Rider, who ships in from Southern California for trainer Doug O'Neill. Since being moved to turf three starts ago, the son of Jimmy Creed boasts two wins—including a stakes—and a stakes placing.

Donegal Racing's Carrick, a son of Giant's Causeway, will make his stakes debut after clear victories in his first two starts: a maiden claiming race on the turf at Belmont and a starter allowance there on the inner turf. BH

DUBAWI FILLY STEALS SPOTLIGHT AT TATTERSALLS JULYBy James Thomas/Racing Post

All the talk in the buildup to the Tat-tersalls July Sale had been about the

draft of Galileo yearling fillies on offer. But after a frantic spell of bidding July 11, it was a daughter of Galileo's old foe Dubawi who hogged the limelight at Park Pad-docks, with Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff going to 350,000gns (US$487,857) to secure the lightly raced Award Winning.

The 3-year-old, who was offered by The Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of John Gosden's Clarehaven Stables, won a Wetherby novice stakes before running down the field in the Cheshire Oaks, where she carried the silks of the Coolmore partners and Markus Jooste.

"She's been bought for an Irish client who's been talking about buying a Dubawi mare for a long time," said Goff of the filly, who had fetched 720,000gns ($1,141,636) as a yearling.

"She's got a fantastic page, there's Cozzene in there, and it's wonderful outcross material. Everyone can see what she cost as a yearling, and we've followed her for a while, so we're very pleased to get her."

The blue-blooded filly is out of Hit The Sky, a daughter of Cozzene and Prix Saint-Alary (G1) winner Cerulean Sky, in turn a half sister to Darley Irish Oaks (G1) heroine Moonstone. She is a half sister to four stakes winners, namely group 2-winning Royal Bench and group 3 winners Mayhem and Memphis Tennessee.

Just two lots earlier, Goff had also sent the numbers on the bid board rocketing when going to 320,000gns ($446,040) to secure C'est Ca, a daughter of Galileo and the grade 1 winner A Z Warrior. The 3-year-old, another to run for the Coolmore partners and Jooste,

had been signed for at 750,000gns ($1,003,984) as a yearling.

"She's been bought for an American client," said Goff. "The dam won the Frizette, and she's a very nice filly. She's a bit long in the front pasterns, but that comes with the territory with the Sadler's Wells line. She's got a lovely page and she'll be back off to the states.

"I think both mares represented good value. You only have to think back to how strong the December Sale was. Galileo broodmare prospects are in tremendous demand, and Dubawis, if they're not already, are going to be the same."

Galileo GoldmineA packed Park Paddocks ring looked on as the three

yearling fillies by Galileo came under the hammer. Despite being bested in the market, the trio all but lived up to their presale expectations.

The first two of the trio, all of which were offered by The Castlebridge Consignment, went the way of Paul Dunkley's Apple Tree Stud and Federico Barberini, with the filly out of Timbuktu fetching 220,000gns ($306,653) and the daughter of Luas Line bringing a winning bid of 150,000gns ($209,082).

However, stud manager Robert 'Choc' Thornton explained that doubling up on the Galileo yearlings had not been the plan when he and Barberini entered the ring.

"We only intended to buy one, but I stood there with Federico and when we saw the second one making much less than we expected, we couldn't let an opportunity like that go," he said.

"It's all about the broodmare band at Apple Tree," Thornton continued. "Building that is a slow process, and we're taking our time doing things. We've just got the seven mares at the moment, although we have fillies in training and two other yearling fillies who'll join these two in going into training. These two will be raced, and

hopefully they'll have a home for life after that."The best was saved until last among the highly

anticipated triumvirate, as Ronald Rauscher went to 300,000gns ($418,163) for the daughter of Galileo and the group 3-winning Danehill mare Milanova, a sister to Holy Roman Emperor.

Goff, who had also made determined plays on the first two Galileo fillies, gave Rauscher most to think about, but the final bid, delivered from the steps by the exit to the ring, was enough to bring John O'Kelly's gavel down.

"It hasn't quite been decided where she'll go into training, but we've got plenty of time to think about that," said Rauscher. "She's still very young, but she's very typical of the family. There are lots of good horses in that family that aren't on the page, like Night Shift and Encosta De Lago.

"I think she has very good paddock value, she handled herself very well at the sale, and she vetted very well. There might not be too many opportunities to buy a filly like this."

Rauscher went on to explain that he has a particular affinity for this family, having spent his formative years in Canada, from where this line takes its roots.

"I'm a bit biased towards the pedigree as it's an old Jean-Louis Levesque family from Canada and I used to work at Windfields, so I had a lot to do with horses like Barachois and La Voyageuse," he said. "She's been bought for a European-based owner who doesn't want to be named."

The trio of Galileo yearlings had all been owned or part-owned by troubled South African retail magnate Jooste, who has been forced to disperse his stock amid a string of accountancy fraud allegations.

At the close of trade on Wednesday, 208 lots had changed hands for turnover of 5,407,000gns ($7,536,682)—a 23% year-on-year drop. The average of 25,995gns ($36,234) was down 17% and the median of 9,000gns ($12,545) was down from 10,000gns 12 months ago. The clearance rate stood at 77%.

PHOENIX THOROUGHBREDS THROWS WEIGHT BEHIND ACLAIMBy James Thomas/Racing Post

When Phoenix Thoroughbreds purchased a 50% stake in the National Stud newcomer Aclaim last

November, the high-rolling operation pledged to throw its considerable weight behind the group 1-winning son of Acclamation.

And during the July 11 session of the Tattersalls July Sale the rising force made good on its promise when purchasing Ulfah Dream, the very first mare to be offered in foal to Aclaim, for 80,000gns (US$111,510) from the draft of Hazelwood Bloodstock.

"The minute Phoenix saw there were mares in foal to Aclaim in the catalog, they wanted to show their support—they've always made their intentions on that front very clear," said Dermot Farrington, who signed the docket on behalf of Phoenix.

"We looked at the three mares here in foal to him and they're all nice mares, but they took a particular shine to Ulfah Dream," he said. "Physically, she suits Aclaim, and there's a bit of speed in the family, and she's by a good sire herself."

Ulfah Dream, a 5-year-old daughter of Oasis Dream, is out of Ulfah, a sister to Haatef and Walayef.

"We'll foal her down and then decide whether she'll go back to Aclaim or not, and I think the intentions will be to race the foal, all being well," continued Farrington. "It's their first stallion, so they want to give

him as much support as possible."Farrington's involvement with Aclaim runs far

beyond signing for mares carrying to the stallion, having also bred and part-owned the high-achieving 5-year-old.

He also gave an update on the horse's burgeoning stud career.

"He's got 136 mares in foal, so he was a busy horse, but I thought he'd be well-received," he said. "I'm very happy with the quality of mares he received. It's all well having lots of soldiers on the ground, but you need pedigree behind them, and he's certainly got that."

Aclaim—winner of the group 1 Qatar Prix de la Foret and the group 2 Park Stakes, and from the family of classic winners Montjeu and Galileo Gold—stood his debut season in Newmarket at a fee of £12,500 (approximately $16,500). BH

COLT OUT OF RIA ANTONIA TOPS JRHA SALE'S FOAL SESSIONBy BloodHorse Staff

The first colt produced by Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Ria Antonia made a splash at

the July 10 foal session of the Japan Racing Horse Association Select Sale.

Offered as hip 400, the son of leading Japanese sire Deep Impact was purchased by Hajimie Satomi for ¥290 million (US$2,615,800). The session-topper is the seventh consecutive Deep Impact son or daughter to top the foal session of the sale.

"He was my pick of the day," Satomi told Racing Post. "This colt reminds me of Satono Diamond, and my advisor, Yasuo Ikee, suggested this was the nicest Deep Impact foal in the catalog. I hope he will go one place better in the Japanese Derby than Satono Diamond."

Satomi Horse Company campaigns Satono Diamond, a two-time grade 1 winner who was named Japan's champion 3-year-old male in 2016. He finished second in the 2016 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1).

Ria Antonia was named Canada's champion 2-year-old filly after her victory in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita Park, where she was placed first by the stewards after She's a Tiger was disqualified for interference in the stretch. Campaigned by Christopher Dunn and Loooch Racing Stables, the daughter of Rockport Harbor won two of

14 starts, placed in two other grade 1 races, and earned more than $1.5 million.

Consigned to the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Sale by Three Chimneys Farm, Ria Antonia was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.8 million. She has produced three foals to date, her first two being daughters of Deep Impact who have not yet started. The first of those fillies is a juvenile named Ria Olivia. BH

LOOKING BACK

THE LEGACY OF DELAWARE STALWART OBEAHBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

The du Pont family has long been associated with Delaware and Thoroughbred racing. A business-

man and sportsman, William du Pont Jr. was one of the men responsible for the design and construction of Delaware Park, just outside the city of Wilmington.

One of the most beautiful tracks in the East, Delaware Park opened for business in June 1937, and one of its standout races in the opening year's card was the New Castle Handicap (named for the historic nearby city), a race for fillies and mares 3 and up at 1 1/16 miles. Fittingly, the house horse won the inaugural running when William du Pont Jr.'s homebred Foxcatcher Farms filly Rosenna defeated a field of six by 1 1/2 lengths. Coincidentally, Foxcatcher won a second time, with the homebred Parlo in 1955, the year the New Castle was renamed the Delaware Handicap. Delaware Park hosts the 81st running of the race July 14.

In 1937, another member of the extended du Pont family, Jane du Pont Lunger, started her own Delaware-based racing establishment with her husband, Harry Lunger. Under the Christiana Stable banner, the yellow jacket with purple sash and yellow-and-purple blocked sleeves became familiar sights on the racing scene and found their way to the Delaware Handicap winner's circle on four occasions. In 1958-59, Christiana homebred Endine won back-to back runnings. A decade later, Christiana returned, this time with the store-bought filly Obeah.

At the 1966 Saratoga yearling sale, Christiana purchased for $15,000 a bay filly from the first crop of Cyane, whom the

Lungers had raced to win the prestigious Futurity Stakes at 2 and the Dwyer Handicap at 3. Book of Verse, the dam, descended from the excellent foundation mare Aloe (ancestress of such stars of the sport as Round Table, Moccasin, Highclere, Height of Fashion, Deep Impact, Gone West, etc).

Obeah was trained by Henry Clark, and her only stakes victory from 12 starts at 2 came in the Blue Hen Stakes at, appropriately enough, Delaware Park. Although she was consistent at 3, three wins and three seconds from eight starts, the best she could do in stakes was a second in the Firenze Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack.

At 4, Obeah came into the 32nd running of the Delaware Handicap as the fourth choice in a field of seven going 10 furlongs. Walter Jeffords Jr.'s Singing Rain was favored. Ridden by John Rotz, Obeah raced in fourth before gaining a head advantage at the stretch call and extending it to 4 3/4 lengths at the wire.

Defending her crown the following year, Obeah faced 11 opponents. Sent off as the second choice to Barbara Hunter's Pattee Canyon, the Christiana color-bearer, ridden by Leroy Moyers, used a similar running style to post a 1 1/4-length victory.

Obeah won 11 of her 46 starts with 16 placings and earnings of $387,299, and retired after her 5-year-old season. She was as proficient in her second career as in her first. From 12 foals she produced four stakes winners,

three of them graded. Bred to Deputy Minister for her penultimate foal, she produced Go for Wand, whose racing prowess earned her Eclipse Awards at 2 and 3.

To honor Obeah, Delaware Park named a stakes race in her honor—one that has seen such stars as Havre de Grace, Fleet Indian, Unbridled Belle, and I'm a Chatterbox wear its laurels. BH
