Dear Friends,

I sit here in awe of how rapidly the Summer is passing! There’s much to share with you this month, so I’ll get on with it.

Last Saturday, July 22nd, the Sowing Seeds of Mercy Celebration was held at the Walters’ farm in rural Loyal as a fund-raiser for The House of Mercy shelter for the homeless right here in Loyal. It was a grand time of ecumenical cooperation throughout Clark County. Bishops and pastors from the ELCA Lutheran, United Church of Christ, United Methodist, and Roman Catholic churches were present to share concern for the County’s homeless situation. Our own Bishop Jung drove five hours from Kansas City on Friday evening to his home in Madison. His wife, Kim, flew in from Nashville Friday evening to Madison. Together, they drove three hours round trip to participate in the celebration, because they were impressed with the magnitude of this event. They told me they couldn’t stay away because the need is so vitally important. All in all, the UMC was wonderful-ly represented on the House of Mercy donation calendar. You see, daily operational costs at the House of Mer-cy run $150.00. On behalf of the Wisconsin Annual Conference of the UMC, Bishop & Mrs. Jung donated for one day in August; York Center donated for September 11, and Loyal donated for September 15. Blessed be the name of the Lord!!!

Vacation Bible School (VBS) was quite successful! The theme was Liberty Square, a Colonial American setting. Each evening we heard the ongoing tale of the uppity, wealthy Mrs. Wellington and servant girl Abigail and the Washingtons’ dinner party. The Conley Twins mystery concerned the kidnapping of the President’s daughter. Our timetable was chockfull with music, snack-shak, crafts galore, games and Bible lessons.

Upcoming news is abundant! The All-Church Picnic is Sunday, August 13th. We’ll meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Loyal Westside Park Pavilion for service. Afterwards we’ll share one of those famous Methodist potluck meals to-gether!

A sure sign of Summer’s demise is the Cornfest celebration the end of August. This year, the Ecumenical Pray-er Service will be hosted by the Loyal UMC at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 24th. Lucy Kramas and friend Bob will lead us in a Polka Service.

New Members Classes are planned for August 30, September 6 & 13, at 7:30 p.m. We’ll meet at the church in Loyal. I ordered some materials just this morning that will help give better understanding the our Methodist tradition.

Confirmation Classes are upon us for the next two years! If you have a young person beginning 6th grade or older who has not yet been confirmed, this is the time to begin the process. We’ll be using “Colaborate: Meth-odist Confirmation” by SparkHouse. Sessions will cover the Old Testament, New Testament, and Methodist History & Doctrine. Each lesson has a DVD segment as a highlight. We are going to have a blast! Oh, did I men-tion the occasional pizza & game nights????

By the way, Dan, Jack, Izzie and I are going on another tent-camping trip. Had so much fun before, we’re going to do it again!

Be sure to check out all these events inside this edition of the newsletter!

Till next time,

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! LIBERTY VILLAGE VBS...An American Faith and Freedom Tour

was held at York Center UMC on Sunday, July 23 through Thursday, July 27th from 5:15-8:15PM.

Twenty-one young patriots ages 3 through 5th grade from five area churches and Mosinee participat-

ed in the historical adventure. Everyone ate great American treats served in The Boston Tea Party Inn. They gath-

ered at LIBERTY SQUARE to learn and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Flag, the Christian Flag, and the

Holy Bible as well as participate in a continuing skit performed by Miss Abigail, a colonial serving girl to President

and Mrs. Washington and Mrs. Wellington, a pushy colonial lady trying to see the President.

Liberty Belle, the Story Lady (aka Pastor Patsy) told an exciting Chip and Claire Mystery, "Trouble In Washington".

The three groups: Little Patriots, Colonial Kids, and Liberty League learned patriotic and Bible songs during music

time with Lori Rowe. Each night, Nicki Peroshek helped students learn to become strong believers in Jesus through

Bible stories and memorizing a scripture verse. They completed a craft with Fern Rowe, Ann Lindow, and Shelby

Zvolena. The kids played some fun games too with Haven Peroshek, Alyssia Zvolena, and Jesse Rowe.

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who donated food, helped with dishes, assisted the kids during the different ses-

sions, helped with crafts, the parents and family members, and anything else who helped make this year's LIBERTY

VILLAGE VBS a success. If we start naming people, we'll forget someone so...... THANK YOU!!!!!

On Thursday night, the kids and staff hosted a program for their families to share what they learned during the

week through songs, summary of Bible stories and memory verses, participation awards, and the final part of the

Opening Skit between Miss Abigail and Mrs. Wellington. Cake and ice cream donated by the Lindow family was

enjoyed by all after the program. .

We should always endeavor to make those who can’t be with us at church know that they are still part of us. Sometimes we find ourselves dealing with difficult and

challenging seasons when it’s not easy to be out and about. Perhaps it’s due to the aging process or debilitating illness. Let’s remember to always be present with our prayers, phone calls, cards, and visits. We are the body of Christ, members of one another. ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2017 The Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church was held June 16-19, 2017, at the Marriott Madison West at Middle-ton, Wisconsin. The theme this year was “One with Christ”. We began on Friday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. with opening worship by Bishop Heon Young Choir. His presentation was done with an interpreter. He is from the Dongbu Conference of South Korea and this is the 13th year their 20-member delegation has been invited to our Annual Con-ference. After that we went through seven action items which all passed-these we do every year-approving Camp Sunday, United Methodist Women’s Sunday, etc. We recessed at 5 p.m. and reconvened again from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Yvette and I went to the laity session. Pastor Patsy met during that same time in their clergy session. Each morning and each afternoon, we were treated to a very excellent speaker, Rev. Adam Hamilton, senior pastor at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection (membership of his church in Kansas City is 10,000). He spoke on “Leading Beyond the Halls”—lessons in leader-ship, worship, preaching, evangelism, and missional outreach; from being attentive to the needs of older congregations to initiating conversa-tions with visitors and reaching 21st century young people which may mean rethinking church. (At the Kansas City church, Rev. Hamilton has 250 staff members for the operation of the church.) He was a very interesting speaker. There were many other interesting speakers throughout the days. Membership numbers have shifted globally with growth in Africa and Asia and decline in the U.S. and Europe. An astonishing point of view was made by a Wisconsin pastor who reminded us of the persecuted church; that there have been 250,000 to 900,000 Christians persecuted because their belief in Christ in areas around the world is not tolerat-ed. Pray for them. There were 15 pastors who retired this year. One of them was my neighbor, Pastor Mike Carlson of the Zion UMC of Marshfield. I know he will be missed. On the other hand, there were at least 13 licensed local pastors that were commissioned and maybe more. Pastor Evan Butterbrodt, one of our former pastors, was recognized for 25 years of service. York Center and Loyal both sent checks for the in-gathering at Conference this year ($50.00 and $200.00, respectively). Most likely these will be used by UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). There was the discontinuance of one church—Aldersgate UMC of Milwaukee, but in this case, the Cabinet approved the transfer of the build-ing to Milwaukee: Urban Poeima—a new church-start for future growth. Both Loyal and York Center were listed in recognition of apportionment payments for the year ending December 31, 2016. No churches were listed this year that may have been in arrears. A motion was made and carried to observe a “Mental Health and Disability Awareness Sunday” sometime in the month of May or it could be observed any Sunday. In regard to new appointments, Zion UMC of Marshfield and Spencer UMC will share a new pastor from South Korea. Chili, Colby and Withee are to be announced. Rev. Dong Su Lee was appointed to Oneida UMC in the Northeast District. An action item to “continue a feasibility study for a major financial campaign” was voted on and passed. This is the second time it was voted on. At this time, this means they will not use more than $60,000 to decide if they will be wanting to go ahead with “Imagine Wisconsin Anew”—meaning they will eventually then present specific projects to be funded. In order for this to proceed, they will have to bring this item back to Conference next year, vote again, and then if it passes, it will allow $5,000,000 to be raised over 5 years to fund this campaign. This is the same principle that was implemented some years ago for the Fund for Discipleship that was used to fund the building built in honor of Bishop Sharon Rader at Pine Lake Center. I enjoyed my time at Conference and sharing time with Pastor Patsy and Yvette. We were blessed with good fellowship. As uncontentious as it was, there will be issues coming up in special sessions of General Conference in 2018 as to constitutional amendments that we will find out about at Annual Conference 2018. May God who is all powerful keep His mighty hand on the minds and hearts of all involved. The rest of us can pray for peaceful answers. Because of Jesus, we are so lucky to be along for the ride! Thank you, Darlene Cook
