Thirty year ago , a separate A r 1orce was born. It was conceiv d by

the v ision and foresight of en such as tchell and Arn old . It was nurturecby courage and sacrifice in tte sk ies over St. Mih el, P loesti, and Tokyo .It w dev eloped through years of dedicated serv ce by aircrews , mechanics, engineers, and clerks, whose team ork de onstrated the unique potential of

airpower .

or the past thr e decades, that potential has continued to mature anddevelop, strengthened by the demand of crises and conflicts and by theday-to-day tasks of national defense. Tle Air Force has emerged a strong, professional force. It is responsible for two-third of the strategic triad, for the bulk of the Nation's tactical air capability, for much of our activitin s ace, and for the entire military airlift and aerospace defense missions.

In perfor ng these vital roles,he rnen and wom en of the A r Force

ave carried forward a proud tradition of excell nce and of service. I am

confident that we c n and will display that sam e spirit as we take on the

chall nges that lie ahead .
