SWIMMING PROGRAM Next week we commence our 2017 Intensive swimming program at the Glen Eira Swim Centre for our Prep, Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 children. Our school promotes the importance of children learning to swim and it will be wonderful to see our children gaining in confidence and improving their skills over this fortnightly program. Thank you, in advance, for ensuring your child/children are organised for this program each day. Special thanks to Joel Pollard and Tyhanne Cogan for overseeing this valuable program. PARENT OPINION SURVEY Last week 80 families received an email link to complete this year’s Department of Education annual Parent Opinion Survey. This is a computer generated random sample survey of parents carried out each year as part of our Annual Reporting process. It is useful for School Council and teachers when working together to continually improve the programs and services we offer our families. It is a confidential survey. For those families who received a survey, we appreciate you taking the time to complete this. If you have any question please see Karen, Michael or myself.

GRADE 3/4 CAMP THANK YOU Congratulations to Rebecca Batten and Larissa Kennedy for organising last week’s exciting camp for our 3/4 students. The camp was held

at Mt Evelyn. Hopefully your child shared their adventures with their families on their return. The students were wonderfully behaved and a credit to their families and our school. It was wonderful to see our children making new friendships, supporting one another and thoroughly enjoying the challenges.

Camps provide an important opportunity for the personal development of our students in a safe and caring environment. My thanks to all staff involved and to the staff back at school who supported the camp by shuffling their normal timetables and yard duty around. UPDATING OUR SCHOOL’S POLICIES Staff and School Council recently wrote some new policies in preparation for our upcoming school review. We have written policies outlining protocols and practices for camps, excursions, communication of school polices and employment of staff. These were ratified at our last school council meeting and will be placed on our website. SCHOOL COMMUNICATION TOOLS As many of you know last year, Mr Acklom, our ICT/Digital Technologies coordinator, set up our Skoolbag App and this has been a highly effective form of communication for our school community. If families haven’t signed up to use this tool yet, please feel free to call into the office and collect a brochure with full details. I remind families that we do also have a school Twitter account and this has also been used at times to share information. To date it only has a small number of followers but we will be enhancing the use of this a little more over coming months as an additional communication tool. The address is Twitter@CarnegiePrimary

SCHOOL REVIEW Thank you to those families who took the opportunity to provide us with feedback in relation to our upcoming School Review via last term’s survey link. Your thoughts and opinions were well considered and will assist us in making appropriate decisions for CPS. I would also like to invite parents to come and share their ideas personally. Three sessions are being offered, each lasting no longer than an hour. The discussions will centre around: What you feel are the best aspects of

our school at present and what you value most?

Things that we currently do that could be enhanced moving forward?

What skills and capabilities you wish us to foster in your child/children during their time at Carnegie Primary

If you would like to attend one of these sessions, please let me or the office know so we can plan accordingly. The sessions are being offered on Monday 14th August at 9.00am, 2.30pm and 6.30pm. When our new Strategic Plan is developed at our review in line with DET guidelines, goals will be developed in the areas of student achievement, engagement and wellbeing. MICHAEL GROSE/MARTINE OGLETHORPE PARENTING IDEAS – Building self-esteem away from the screens As so much of a young person’s social world revolves around their online feeds and connections, it is no wonder that ‘likes’ and comments have become a social currency and a reflection of where young people see themselves amongst their peers. There are certainly ways we can help ensure that a sense of self-worth is based on the achievements, the values and the qualities that make each and every child unique. Build their independence and resilience early From a very early age, provide them with opportunities to build their independence, have responsibilities, learn to fail, make mistakes and problem solve when things don’t go to plan. These skills will become invaluable in a world that sees constant comparison and the inevitable negative interactions of the online world. Stay relevant Don’t resort to the “in my day we…”. We may well reminisce about the more carefree days where we got to switch off and hangout with mates in the neighbourhood oblivious to what the rest of the world thought of our latest picture. But that’s not particularly relevant to our kids today. And shutting down their account, turning off their computer and walking away from social media altogether is really not an option for most. Be sure your kids know that you understand the role the technology plays and the challenges they face. That way you put

yourself in the best position to have the right conversations and put in place the right boundaries. Provide other role models and community Getting involved in outside pursuits and interests away from the screens can help them form connections with other parts of the community. Coaches, youth leaders and other role models can all play a part in mentoring a child about the importance of balance whilst reminding them that there is a life beyond the screens. Give them opportunities to help There is no better way to feel better about oneself than to feel useful. Helping at home, helping in the community and volunteering can be great ways for kids to build self-worth away from the screens. It may be helping coach some kids at the local sports club or getting involved in a cause or issue that matters to them. This will give them a sense of purpose that revolves around their actions and their input and not just what others perceive about them. Family rituals Regular meals and time where no devices are present can be crucial to providing the stability and security young people need. Mealtimes have been proven to be an effective way of letting kids know that they always have a place that is familiar, secure and unconditional. This may not be a reality for every family every night, but trying to incorporate any sense of ritual into a family, especially one where screens are not involved, will certainly provide a positive impact.

The house system is a traditional feature of schools in the English-speaking world, particularly in commonwealth countries, originating in England. The school is divided

into sub-units called 'houses' and each student is allocated to one house.

In many schools, houses are known by a name other than a colour. The houses may be named after Saints, past Prime Ministers, flora, geographical features or notable

regional topics.

The common theme is always relevant to the school in some way; past or present.

Our school is broken up into four sub-units and at the moment they are called Blue, Green, Yellow and Red. Our Houses compete with one another at sports and in

other ways. Our houses provide for and promote positive team work.

The house captains of 2017 would like to create history. With the support of all our students and school community we would like to work together to name our

houses.

Carnegie is a wonderful school and we are proud of the diversity within our school community.

As part of the renaming process we encourage students and their families to think about what the important values of our school are and how we can reflect and

demonstrate this in our new house names.

We are asking the school community to provide suggestions for a common theme and for four names that can be attached to the current house colours.

Please note, your selection should be based on some connection with the school and community with an explanation provided. We will then be asking the school commu-

nity to vote on the suggestions that are short listed. There is an entry box that is placed at the entrance of 5B which is Mr Miller’s room upstairs.

We hope you support us in this endeavour.

BUNNINGS BBQ—THANK YOU Thank you so much to all our Grade 3 families who helped out at the BBQ

last Saturday. Thank you also to Carrie Fowler (gr 6) who also helped out

because there weren’t quite enough volunteers from Grade 3 families to fill

all the spots which was a bit disappointing.

A HUGE thank you must also go to Michele Gasgoine for organising the

whole event. It was a great success which saw us raise $1,400!

PHOTO FUNDRAISER-Sunday September 17th We are doing a photo fundraiser with Vision Portraits this year where you can

have a family portrait session for only $30. You can include your whole family

in the session or just the kids. It will be done at school on Sunday September

17th and the entire $30 goes directly to the school. You will receive 2 prints

(same image) and 2 frames with the option to purchase more images if you

choose.
