order of mass

This program is formatted for mobile devices.

As we pray in Psalm 63 “O God, you are my God, it is you I seek! For you my body yearns; for you my soul thirsts,” these past few months have awakened an immense longing for the communal celebration of the Eucharist. We thank you for your patience through this unprecedented time, and we now look forward to welcoming your return to the Basilica. As pilgrims are once again able to experience the celebration of the Sacraments, the beauty of the art and architecture, and the solemnity of the liturgy and music, we ask you to observe the following:

• Face masks must be worn at all times inside the Basilica, except when receiving Holy Communion

• Please be seated according to the markings on the pews in the Crypt Church and the Great Upper Church, in order to maintain social distancing

• Please follow the directives of Basilica Ushers and Staff when entering the single-file line for Communion, maintaining a distance of six feet from the people around you

• At the conclusion of Mass all visitors must exit the Basilica through the east side doors, following the directives of ushers and staff

• Those who wish to stay for private prayer following Mass must re-enter the Basilica through the front east side entrance and proceed to the Crypt Church

• The Sacrament of Reconciliation will take place in the East and West Transept Chapels in the Great Upper Church from 9:00 am – 11:00 am, Monday through Saturday

• There are no scheduled Confessions on Sundays

• The Gift Shop and the Bookstore are open daily from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

• The Shrine cafeteria is closed

Thank you for your patience with these requirements as we stand in solidarity with all our brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those most vulnerable to the transmission of the coronavirus. Thank you for your generous support of the ministry of the Basilica during this challenging time. Collection baskets are located at the doors as you exit the Upper Church. You may also make a generous donation online at https://www.nationalshrine.org/donate/. We thank you for your visit and pray that you may always find Mary’s Shrine to be a place of solace and consolation.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

pro f e s s i o N o f fa i t h

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(All bow during these two lines.)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus. We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good.

Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; By your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O Mary, you always shine on our pathas a sign of salvation and of hope.We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provideso that, as in Cana of Galilee,we may return to joy and to feastingafter this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love,to conform to the will of the Fatherand to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferingsand carried our sorrowsto lead us, through the cross,to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care.

You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people.

Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will.

Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land, grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
