DIVINE SERVICETHE SERVICE THAT TEACHES THE FAITH AND FORGIVES SINS

IntroductionOur worship before God is based on what He has taught us through His Word, the Bible. Since it is God who graciously gives us life and salvation, we first gladly receive from Him and then respond in prayer and praise. This is called “Divine Service” because in it God serves us His Word and Sacraments (as opposed to a “human service” were the people “do things” for God and judge God’s presence by experience and not faith). He serves us His gifts, and we thankfully receive. Our worship stems from our faith and speaks the words of faith given us by God. Liturgy describes the “order and structure” of a church service. Our church follows the basic liturgical orders used by the church for the last 2,000 years. It has its roots in Old Testament worship practices and, as illustrated by the numerous Scripture passages included in our bulletin today, is based on the teachings of the Bible. The liturgy outlined below is the order for Holy Communion, the chief service of the Church. We may use different settings of this basic service (as is our setting today), but it will include these elements, though perhaps in a slightly different order. The liturgy brings us the service of God’s forgiveness in the language we speak every day, but with a reverence that distinguishes itself from the irreverent and capricious character of today’s pop-culture and the worldly culture of all time. The worship of God’s people is to be different, because we are different – set apart – chosen to be His holy priesthood and sanctified for His purposes. Thus, in the liturgy of the Divine Service, come not expecting to hear and sing and interact with

what you hear on the radio or see on TV. Expect different and know that it is for your benefit that the Lord calls you to worship and praise Him differently.

Opening Hymn LSB 688 - “Come, Follow Me,” the Savior Spake

1 “Come, follow Me,” the Savior spake, “All in My way abiding;Deny yourselves, the world forsake,Obey My call and guiding.O bear the cross, whate’er betide,Take My example for your guide.

2 “I am the light, I light the way, A godly life displaying;I bid you walk as in the day;I keep your feet from straying.I am the way, and well I showHow you must sojourn here below.

3 “My heart abounds in lowliness, My soul with love is glowing; And gracious words My lips express, With meekness overflowing. My heart, My mind,

My strength, My all, To God I yield, on Him I call.

4 “I teach you how to shun and flee What harms your soul’s salvation,Your heart from ev’ry guile to free, From sin and its temptation.I am the refuge of the soulAnd lead you to your heav’nly goal.”

5 Then let us follow Christ, our Lord, And take the cross appointedAnd, firmly clinging to His Word, In suff’ring be undaunted. For those who bear the battle’s strain The crown of heav’nly life obtain.

InvocationP In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.C Amen.We invoke the name of the Trinity to signify our worship as exclusively Christian and to remember that we are God’s baptized people. Gathered in His name, we are sure of His presence and His blessing. (Matt 28:19)

ExhortationP Dear brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ, we owe all things to

God and claim no merit or worthiness of our own before Him. Let us therefore, with humble and contrite hearts, confess our sins to God our Father, asking Him to forgive our sins for the sake of Christ Jesus our Lord.

Page 4:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

Confession of SinsP Heavenly Father,C It is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I

have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have not lived my life in a way which is pleasing to you. My sin has left me broken and weak. I need your grace and mercy. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, forgive me of my sins. Make me clean in the blood of His passion and remind me of the promises You give me in my baptism. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We cannot approach God without having our sins forgiven. He is holy and we are not. Confession assures us of a clean slate before God and prepares us for worship: hearing God’s Word and receiving the Lord’s Supper. (1 John 1:8-9)

Holy AbsolutionP The Lord has heard your confession and sees your heart. And out of

His great and endless love for you, God has given His Church the authority to forgive sins in Jesus’ name. No, this is not my forgiveness; this is God’s forgiveness. No, I have no power on my own to forgive sins, but Christ Jesus has seen fit to speak His Word through men and pronounce salvation through men. Therefore, as a called and ordained service of Christ, and by the authority given me, I forgive you all your sins in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.God is gracious and merciful. He forgives us for Christ’s sake. This assures us that we can receive the rest of His gifts through the service and return thanks for those gifts. We may now “enter into” His holy presence, having been set free from the burden of sin. (Matt 16:19; John 20:21-23)

SERVICE OF THE WORDThe Service of the Word is the first chief portion of the Divine Service liturgy. In this service, we hear, recite, sing, and pray the Word of the Lord. We hear the Scripture read and preached, we speak or chant the Introit or Psalm responsively, we sing the Hymn of Praise and other hymns, and we pray the Kyrie and the Collect of the Day.

The height of this service is the Gospel Reading and the Sermon.

Entrance Hymn LSB 712 - Seek Ye First1 Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.

And all these things shall be added unto you! Allelu, alleluia!

2 Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, Knock and the door shall be opened unto you, Allelu, alleluia!

3 Man does not live by bread alone, but by ev’ry wordThat proceeds from the mouth of the Lord, Allelu, alleluia!

Introit means “enter”. Reminding us that salvation comes to us through Christ crucified, we sing the story of God’s love by singing verses from the Bible’s hymnbook, the Psalms, or a hymn for the theme of the day. (Psalm 100)

Kyrie

Kyrie eleison is a Greek phrase meaning “Lord, have mercy”. We have already received the mercy of God for forgiveness in Holy Absolution. Now we ask for mercy for all other things we need for a God-pleasing spiritual life. (Mark 10:47-48)

Hymn of Praise LSB 367 - Angels from the Realms of Glory sts. 1, 4–51 Angels from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o’er all the earth;

Ye who sang creation’s story, Now proclaim Messiah’s birth. Refrain

ref Come and worship, come and worship; Worship Christ, the newborn King.

2 Saints before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear,Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear. Refrain

3 All creation, join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son,Evermore your voices raising To the_eternal Three in One. Refrain

Having just petitioned the Lord for blessings beyond the forgiveness just granted in absolution, we now praise Him as the One who can deliver those blessings, because He is the all-powerful God. His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, is the Lamb worthy of our praise, just as the angels praised Him at His birth. (Luke 2:14, John 1:29)

SalutationP The Lord be with you.C And also with you.The Salutation is found all through the Scriptures. The pastor stands before the congregation as Christ’s servant. As the Lord’s servant, he speaks God’s peace to the congregation. As the congregation responds with, “and with your spirit” (or “and also with you”), they affirm his call and vocation with respect and Christian love. (2 Timothy 4:22, Ruth 2:4, Judges 6:12, Luke 1:28)

Collect of the DayP Lord of all power and might, author and giver of all good things, graft into

our hearts the love of Your name and nourish us with all goodness that we may love and serve our neighbor; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen. The Collect is a short, general prayer that makes a request of God based on the theme of the day. It is a 5-part prayer: address, basis for the petition, the petition itself, benefits of the petition and conclusion of praise to God. (Jude 25)

Old Testament Reading 1 Kings 19:9b–21A The Old Testament Reading is from 1 Kings, chapter 19. Behold, the word of the LORD came to [Elijah], and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. And the one who escapes from the sword of

Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.The Old Testament is the foundation for the New Testament. We read it and meditate on it just as Christ Himself did. (sometimes the Old Testament reading is substituted with a reading from the Book of Acts). (Luke 4:17-21)

Epistle Galatians 5:1, 13–25A The Epistle is from Galatians, chapter 5.

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. . . .

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Acts 2 says that the early church was “devoted to the teachings of the Apostles,” and so is the church today by regular public reading of their letters. (Acts 2:42)

Gospel Acclamation LSB 477 - Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven3 Alleluia, alleluia! Glory be to God on high:

Alleluia to the Savior who has gained the victory;Alleluia to the Spirit, fount of love and sanctity!Alleluia, alleluia to the triune Majesty!Text: Public domain

Because we are about to hear the very words and deeds of Christ, the congregation acknowledges the Lord’s presence in their midst through His Gospel by standing and singing “Alleluia,” which means “Praise the Lord.” (John 6:68)

Holy Gospel Luke 9:51–62P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the ninth chapter.C Glory to You, O Lord. When the days drew near for [Jesus] to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village.

As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ. The third reading of the day comes form the life and teachings of Christ. It establishes the theme for the day and is usually noticeable in the prayers, sermon, and other parts of the service that are “proper” or specific to this particular Sunday. (John 6:63, John 20:30-31)

Children's MessageWhile a relatively new addition to the liturgy, the Children’s Message or Children’s Sermon provides a short, simple, and sometimes visual proclamation of the Gospel and the Sermon proper. This not only gives the children an opportunity to interact in

Page 9:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

the service in a special way, but it reveals just how Jesus loves and blesses children of all ages and invites them to come and sit at His feet and learn. (Luke 18:16)

Hymn of the Day LSB 685 - Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus1 Let us ever walk with Jesus,

Follow His example pure,Through a world that would deceive us, And to sin our spirits lure. Onward in His footsteps treading,Pilgrims here, our home above,Full of faith and hope and love,Let us do the Father’s bidding. Faithful Lord, with me abide;I shall follow where You guide.

2 Let us suffer here with JesusAnd with patience bear our cross.Joy will follow all our sadness;Where He is, there is no loss.Though today we sow no laughter,We shall reap celestial joy;All discomforts that annoyShall give way to mirth hereafter.Jesus, here I share Your woe;Help me there Your joy to know.

3 Let us gladly die with Jesus.Since by death He conquered death,He will free us from destruction, Give to us immortal breath.Let us mortify all passion That would lead us into sin; And the grave that shuts us inShall but prove the gate to heaven.Jesus, here with You I die,There to live with You on high.

4 Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the deadThat to life we may awaken.Jesus, You are now our head.We are Your own living members;Where You live, there we shall beIn Your presence constantly,Living there with You forever.Jesus, let me faithful be,Life eternal grant to me.

SermonAs the prophets, apostles and even Jesus Himself did, the pastor speaks on behalf of God, bringing His Word to shepherd His people. (1 Corinthians 1:23, 2 Timothy 4:1-2)

Confession of Faith Nicene CreedC I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

Page 10:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Upon hearing the Word preached, the congregation unites in one voice to speak a summary of the Christian faith just preached. The creeds signify our allegiance to Christian doctrine and unite us with over 2,000 years of Christian history. (1 Timothy 6:12)

SERVICE OF THE WORD ENDS HERE

Prayer of the ChurchAs baptized children of God, we have a responsibility to pray not only for ourselves, but also for the world. As instructed by the Word, we pray that earthly rulers would keep the peace so that we might worship God in quietude and without fear. (1 Timothy 2:1-6)

Offering & Offertory

1 We give Thee but Thine own, Whate’er the gift may be;All that we have is Thine alone,A trust, O Lord, from Thee.

2 May we Thy bounties thusAs stewards true receiveAnd gladly, as Thou blessest us,To Thee our firstfruits give!

3 Oh, hearts are bruised and dead,And homes are bare and cold,And lambs for whom the Shepherd bled, Are straying from the fold.

4 To comfort and to bless,To find a balm for woe,To tend the lone and fatherless Is angels’ work below.

5 The captive to release,To God the lost to bring,To teach the way of life and peace, It is a Christ-like thing.

6 And we believe Thy Word,Though dim our faith may be:Whate’er for Thine we do, O Lord, We do it unto Thee.

We receive so many bountiful gifts from God that we are very glad to give back to Him. Psalm 116 teaches that the highest offering is to simply receive in faith the cup of salvation, especially as we look forward to the second part of the morning, the Service of the Sacrament. (Psalm 116:12-14, 17-19)

SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENTThe Service of the Sacrament is the second portion of the Divine Service. It is here that

the gifts of God are given through bread and wine. In the Service of the Word, the Gospel and the Sermon were the highest point of the service, where in the Service of

the Sacrament, the Words of Institution and Distribution are the highest point.

PrefaceP The Lord be with you.C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts.C We lift them to the Lord.P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.First recorded in AD 220, this dialog and prayer begins the liturgy of the Lord’s Supper. Each season has its own unique Proper Preface. (2 Timothy 4:22, Psalm 136)

Page 12:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

Proper PrefaceP It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all

places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation, humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross. Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus LSB 443 - Hosanna, Loud Hosanna3 “Hosanna in the highest!”

That ancient song we sing; For Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heav’n our King. Oh, may we ever praise Him With heart and life and voice And in His blissful presence eternally rejoice!

Text: Public domain

Sanctus means “holy." The body and blood of our Lord are truly present in the Sacrament, and so we use the words of the angels from Isaiah 6 to acknowledge the holy presence of God in this meal. (Isaiah 6:3)

Prayer of ThanksgivingP In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve,

who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood.

C Amen.As the testaments are linked to Christ in the Service of the Word, so do we remember and give thanks for the salvation history in the Church’s table prayer. (Luke 24:30)

Lord’s Prayer LSB 162P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Page 13:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer, given by Christ Himself, is wonderfully appropriate as we approach His Supper. (Matthew 6:9-13)

Words of InstitutionP Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

The words of our Lord bestow (do) exactly what they say! In the Words of Institution the Lord’s Word delivers His true body and blood for our forgiveness. We see bread and wine, but Christ proclaims to us that this is also His true body and blood. This is a profound mystery, but we believe the words of our Lord who can create the universe from nothing, and who can give us His true body and blood in the elements of bread and wine. (Matthew 26:26-28)

Pax Domini LSB 163

P The peace of the Lord be with you always.C Amen.

Page 14:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

The resurrected Lord calmed the fears of the disciples with His peace. The resurrected Lord is present in the Supper, and so the pastor speaks peace to us on His behalf. (John 20:19-21, 26; 14:27)

Agnus Dei LSB 434 - Lamb of God, Pure and Holy sts. 1, 31 Lamb of God, pure and holy,

Who on the cross didst suffer,Ever patient and lowly,Thyself to scorn didst offer. All sins Thou borest for us,Else had despair reigned o’er us:Have mercy on us, O Jesus! O Jesus!

3 Lamb of God, pure and holy,Who on the cross didst suffer,Ever patient and lowly,Thyself to scorn didst offer. All sins Thou borest for us,Else had despair reigned o’er us:Thy peace be with us, O Jesus! O Jesus!

Meaning “Lamb of God,” it reminds us that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world and who was sacrificed for our forgiveness. (John 1:29)

DistributionHistorically the church on earth has practiced Closed Communion. This is because the call and necessity for unity of both doctrine and practice is paramount to a faithful and strong church. Receiving the Lord’s Supper is a clear and visible means by which we show our unity, i.e., express our beliefs and practices as Christians. Since we live in a world where the earthly church is not always unified, and beliefs surrounding faith, the Lord’s Supper, Baptism, salvation, etc. are different from church group to church group, this congregation continues in the historic practice of Closed Communion. 1 Water, blood, and Spirit crying,By their witness testifyingTo the One whose death-defying Life has come, with life for all.

2 In a wat’ry grave are buriedAll our sins that Jesus carried;

Page 15:   · Web viewCIt is true. I have sinned. In my thoughts, my words and my deeds, I have disobeyed your Word, squandered your gifts, been irreverent toward your Sacraments and I have

Christ, the Ark of Life, has ferried Us across death’s raging flood.

3 Dark the way, yet Christ precedes us,Past the scowl of death He leads us;Spreads a table where He feeds us With His body and His blood.

4 Though around us death is seething,God, His two-edged sword unsheathing,By His Spirit life is breathing Through the living, active Word.

5 Spirit, water, blood entreating, Working faith and its completingIn the One whose death-defeating Life has come, with life for all.

LSB 708 - Lord, Thee I Love with All My Heart1 Lord, Thee I love with all my heart;

I pray Thee, ne’er from me depart,With tender mercy cheer me.Earth has no pleasure I would share.Yea, heav’n itself were void and bareIf Thou, Lord, wert not near me.And should my heart for sorrow break,My trust in Thee can nothing shake.Thou art the portion I have sought;Thy precious blood my soul has bought.Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord,Forsake me not! I trust Thy Word.

2 Yea, Lord, ’twas Thy rich bounty gaveMy body, soul, and all I haveIn this poor life of labor.Lord, grant that I in ev’ry placeMay glorify Thy lavish graceAnd help and serve my neighbor.Let no false doctrine me beguile;Let Satan not my soul defile.Give strength and patience unto meTo bear my cross and follow Thee.Lord Jesus Christ, my God and Lord, my God and Lord,In death Thy comfort still afford.

3 Lord, let at last Thine angels come,To Abr’ham’s bosom bear me home,That I may die unfearing; And in its narrow chamber keepMy body safe in peaceful sleep

Until Thy reappearing. And then from death awaken me,That these mine eyes with joy may see,O Son of God, Thy glorious face,My Savior and my fount of grace.Lord Jesus Christ, my prayer attend, my prayer attend,And I will praise Thee without end.

Nunc Dimittis LSB 937 - Lord, Bid Your Servant Go in Peace1 Lord, bid Your servant go in peace,

Your word is now fulfilled. These eyes have seen salvation’s dawn,This child so long foretold.

2 This is the Savior of the world,The Gentiles’ promised light,God’s glory dwelling in our midst,The joy of Israel.

3 With saints of old, with saints to come, To You we lift our voice; To Father, Son, and Spirit blest Be honor, love, and praise.

C Amen.Having received forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation, we thank the Lord for His gifts and pray that He will grant us faith to use them in love toward our neighbor. (Psalm 136)

Departing Hymn LSB 832 - Jesus Shall Reign1 Jesus shall reign where’er the sun

Does its successive journeys run;His kingdom stretch from shore to shoreTill moons shall wax and wane no more.

2 To Him shall endless prayer be made,And endless praises crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall riseWith ev’ry morning sacrifice.

3 People and realms of ev’ry tongueDwell on His love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaimTheir early blessings on His name.

4 Blessings abound where’er He reigns:The pris’ners leap, unloose their chains,The weary find eternal rest,And all who suffer want are blest.

5 Let ev’ry creature rise and bringHonors peculiar to our King;Angels descend with songs again,And earth repeat the loud amen.

Attending Communion at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church

In the Lord’s Supper, our Lord gives not only bread and wine but His very body and blood. We eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. Because those who eat and drink unworthily do so to great harm, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold to a confession differing from that of this congregation and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked to first speak with the pastor or an elder. For further reading in Scripture: Matthew 5:23ff; 10:32ff; 18:15-35; 26:26-29; 1 Cor. 11:17-34. When partaking of the Lord’s Supper, after kneeling, please open your hand to indicate desire to partake. Otherwise keep hands closed and cross your arms in front of your chest to receive a blessing from the pastor.
