PASTOR’S CORNER
Today we pray for the dead.
Every day of November we pray for the dead: having begun our month with the Solemnity of All Saints and the
Commemoration of All Souls, those who have gone before us remain near throughout the month. November also ends
our calendar year in the Church. In two weeks, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Christ, King of the Universe, the last
Sunday of our liturgical year, with which we see our own end drawing near. As we look toward Jesus’ triumphant return
we will soon be united with those who have left this world.
Why do we have to pray for the dead? Aren’t they already where they need to be?
You and I only have experience from this life, but the Church, inspired by the Holy Spirit, shares with us perspective from
beyond this world. While we are still on earth, we have extraordinary capacity to improve our condition: we can go to
confession, go to Mass, do works of mercy. The souls in purgatory, however, like students for whom the bell has rung on
their final exam, have to put down their pens, stop writing, and their grade can no longer be improved.
Everything left undone, every offense not made up for, every lingering resentment or bitterness, now weigh on the deceased
like debts that have come home. I will urgently want others to be praying for me when I die, knowing how much I will
owe. The souls in purgatory, not yet where they need to be, not yet in the peace of heaven, desperately need our prayers.
If someone dies in mortal sin, they don’t need our prayers, because we can’t help people who are in hell. If someone is in
heaven they don’t need our prayers, because they already are far more powerful than we are. But the fact is you and I don’t
know where any of the deceased are, unless the Church canonizes them as a saint. So we pray for all the dead, asking that
the light of God shine on all the departed.
In this extraordinary year, the Church has emphasized the importance of praying for the dead more than ever. The Vatican
has given an exceptional plenary indulgence which can be won each day of this month by those who visit a church and
pray the Our Father and the Creed, together with the ordinary conditions for an indulgence, which are
sacramental confession, receiving the Eucharist, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.
That’s a big deal. A plenary indulgence being made available each day shows us how seriously the Church is taking this.
Today, pray for the dead.

Todos los días de Noviembre rezamos por los difuntos: habiendo comenzado nuestro mes con la Solemnidad de Todos
los Santos y la Conmemoración de Todas las Almas, los que nos han precedido permanecen cerca durante todo el mes.
Noviembre también termina nuestro año en la Iglesia. En dos semanas celebraremos la Solemnidad de Cristo, Rey del
Universo, último Domingo de nuestro año litúrgico, con el que veremos acercarse nuestro fin. Al mirar hacia el regreso
triunfal de Jesús, pronto nos uniremos a los que han dejado este mundo.
¿Por qué tenemos que rezar por los muertos? ¿No están ya donde deben estar?
Tú y yo solo tenemos experiencia en esta vida, pero la Iglesia, inspirada por el Espíritu Santo, comparte con nosotros la
perspectiva desde más allá de este mundo. Mientras todavía estamos en la tierra, tenemos una capacidad extraordinaria
para mejorar nuestra condición: podemos confesarnos, ir a Misa, hacer obras de misericordia. Las almas del purgatorio,
sin embargo, como los estudiantes a los que les ha sonado la campana en su examen final, tienen que dejar sus
bolígrafos, dejar de escribir y su calificación ya no puede mejorarse.
Todo lo que queda sin hacer, cada ofensa no remediada, cada resentimiento o amargura persistente, ahora pesa sobre el
difunto como deudas que han vuelto a casa. Necesitaré con urgencia que otros oren por mí cuando yo muera, sabiendo
cuánto deberé. Las almas del purgatorio, que aún no están donde deben estar, que aún no están en la paz del cielo,
necesitan desesperadamente nuestras oraciones.
Si alguien muere en pecado mortal, no necesita nuestras oraciones, porque no podemos ayudar a las personas que están
en el infierno. Si alguien está en el cielo, no necesita nuestras oraciones, porque ya es mucho más poderoso que
nosotros. Pero el hecho es que tú y yo no sabemos dónde está ninguno de los difuntos, a menos que la Iglesia los
canonice como santo. Entonces oramos por todos los muertos, pidiendo que la luz de Dios brille sobre todos los
difuntos.
En este año extraordinario, la Iglesia ha enfatizado más que nunca la importancia de orar por los muertos. El Vaticano ha
otorgado una indulgencia plenaria excepcional que pueden ganar todos los días de este mes quienes visiten una iglesia y
recen el Padre Nuestro y el Credo, junto con las condiciones ordinarias para una indulgencia, que son la confesión
sacramental, recibir la Eucaristía, y orando por las intenciones del Santo Padre.
Eso es un gran problema. Una indulgencia plenaria disponible todos los días nos muestra cuán en serio se está tomando
esto la Iglesia.

CONFIRMATION AND FIRST COMMUNION
We are scheduling groups to be confirmed or receive first Communion at our Saturday morning 8:00am Masses. If you have a child who is scheduled to receive a sacrament, we will be notifying you of your date by phone and following up with an information/instruction letter by mail. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we move forward with these special celebrations for your children.
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Eucharistic Adoration is currently in need of people who
can consider signing up as substitutes. A variety of hours
are available as many of our committed Adorers have
returned to work & our Adoration Substitute list is low.

EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED
If it ever crossed your mind that Jesus was somewhat
lacking in a sense of humor, today’s Gospel should belie
any such notion. Jesus’ story of the five wise and five
foolish bridesmaids is downright hilarious. The
circumstances of the story were surely familiar to Jesus’
listeners, just as they are—if we think about it—to us.
Weddings never, ever start on time. There’s always a
delay. Buttons pop off at the last minute. Flowers wilt.
Cars full of wedding guests get caught in traffic. Soloists
contract laryngitis. Brides or grooms or priests show up
late! So the only reasonable way to approach a wedding
is with a sense of humor, to realize that something
probably will go awry, and, when that happens, to smile
about it.
Jesus tells this funny story to encourage us to be watchful,
yes; to be ready, yes. But he doesn’t tell it to make us dour
and somber. The heavy-hearted tremble, waver, lose sight
of their place and purpose, and fall asleep. The
lighthearted know that the unexpected will happen—is
bound to happen—so they are awake in their place and

ESPERAR LO INESPERADO
Si alguna vez se te pasó por la mente que a Jesús le faltaba
un poco del sentido del humor, el Evangelio de hoy
destierra esa noción. La parábola de Jesús sobre las cinco
jóvenes precavidas y las cinco jóvenes descuidadas es
sumamente chistosa. Las circunstancias de la parábola sin
duda resultaban familiares a los que escuchaban a Jesús,
como lo son para nosotros. Las bodas nunca, nunca
comienzan a la hora. Siempre hay un retraso. Botones que
se caen al último minuto. Flores que se marchitan.
Vehículos llenos de invitados atascados en el tráfico.
Solistas que contraen laringitis. ¡Novias, novios o
sacerdotes que llegan tarde! Así que la única manera
razonable de encarar una boda es con buen sentido del
humor, conscientes de que algo va a salir mal, y, cuando
eso suceda, sonreír.
Jesús cuenta esta historia chistosa para alentarnos a que
seamos vigilantes, sí; a estar preparados, sí. Pero no nos
la cuenta para que nos amarguemos y nos
ensombrezcamos. Los apesadumbrados tiemblan,
titubean, pierden de vista su lugar y propósito, y se quedan
dormidos. Los festivos saben que sucederá lo inesperado
–más que seguro —así que están despiertos en su puesto

SAINT FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI (1850-
1917)
November 13 Burly longshoremen glared at the woman in widow’s
dress who interrupted their drinking to beg money, in
broken English, for her orphanage. The bar exploded in
laughter as one man responded by spitting in her face.
“That was for me,” the woman smiled. “Do you have
anything for the children?” Given today’s national
debate, could it be as much God’s sense of humor as
God’s will for our sanctification that our first American
saint should be an immigrant and naturalized citizen?
Frances Cabrini, adopting the name Xavier, confided to
Pope Leo XIII her longing to follow her Jesuit patron to
Asia. But the Pope replied, “Not East—West!” So she
and her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart
exchanged exotic dreams of China for the impoverished
reality of Italian ghettos across the United States and
Central and South America. Before her death, Frances
had founded seventy educational, health care, child, and
family service institutions. Today, from Siberia to
Ethiopia, in sixteen countries, Mother Cabrini’s sisters
and lay associates embody her practical spirituality:
“Let’s get to work! We’ll have eternity to rest!”

SANTA FRANCISCA JAVIER CABRINI (1850-
1917) 13 de noviembre
Frances nació en el Norte de Italia en una familia de
campo, donde había mucha fe. Su vocación misionera
nació al escuchar las historias de los grandes misioneros
que su padre le contaba. Aunque fue rechazada en algunas
comunidades religiosas debido a su estado de salud, se
graduó como maestra y se dedicó a la educación. Ahí, por
pedido de un obispo, fundó un instituto para educar a las
novicias, mismo que pasó a ser el Instituto de las
Hermanas Misioneras del Sagrado Corazón. Una vez en
la comunidad religiosa, asumió el nombre de Javier, pues
admiraba mucho a san Francisco Javier y por pedido de
Juan Bautista Scalabrini vino a los Estados Unidos a
servir a los italianos, quienes experimentaban malos
tratos, explotación y discriminación. Junto con seis
hermanas llegó a Nueva York en 1898, para atender a
emigrantes italianos en cuestiones de educación, salud,
oficios y catequesis. En sólo 35 años fundó más de 70
instituciones para emigrantes hasta que murió en una de
ellas, Columbus Hospital, en Chicago. Fue la primera
