Prayer for Our Enemies O God of all mankind, whose Son commands us to love those who hate us, hear our prayers for our enemies. Deliver them and us from deeds beneath the dignity of man whom you have redeemed. Turn us from our evil ways by removing hatred, cruelty, and revenge from our hearts. Let others see Christ in us, and grant that we reflect his love in every thought, word, and action. Amen.

The conference of religious vocation directors convened its quarterly meeting. At the end of the first day, a group gathered for some liquid refreshment. Soon they became embroiled a debate over which religious order was the best. The Franciscans touted their community's commitment to the poor and abandoned. The Dominicans countered with praise for their community's charism of preaching. Others spoke glowingly of their specific apostolates. After midnight, the party finally came to an end and each director went to his room. When they woke in the morning, they discovered a message tacked to the bulletin board: “All orders are created equal.” It was signed, "God. SJ." OH, BROTHER! Statement on Pope Francis’ Appointment of New Auxiliary Bishop to Serve the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Most Reverend José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels April 5, 2018 Greetings, my friends, and welcome! This is a great day of joy for the family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In this beautiful Easter season, our Holy Father Pope Francis has blessed us today by appointing a new Auxiliary Bishop to serve our people. I am honored to introduce you this morning to Bishop-elect Marc Trudeau. As you will discover, our new auxiliary bishop has a great personal story. I would just like to share with you my own privilege of knowing him and working with him for these past eight years. Our Bishop-elect is a very fine priest. He is a man of prayer and he is a man of service. I know he is going to be, as Pope Francis likes to say, “a shepherd who knows the smell of his sheep.” As a priest, our Bishop-elect has always had a heart for his people. He is close to them in their joys and sorrows and in the challenges they face in their everyday lives.

So, I know that he is going to be a great bishop. Just one thing I want to point out. Being a bishop in the Catholic Church is not like any ordinary “job.” That is why this is such a special day of joy for us. We believe that Jesus Christ himself chooses every bishop to carry on the mission that he entrusted to his Apostles and his Church. For us, every bishop is a living sign of Jesus — who loves us, who is alive with us, and who is walking with us on the journey of our lives. The bishop has the responsibility of helping us to know Jesus and to know his love and his plan for our lives. The bishop is called to pray for God’s people, to teach them, and to lead them — always by the example of his own love and self-sacrifice. So, this is the beautiful mission that Pope Francis has entrusted to Bishop-elect Trudeau! And this is the beautiful gift that God is giving all of us today — in giving us a new bishop for the family of God here in Los Angeles. I will be privileged to ordain our Bishop-elect here at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on June 7 at 2 p.m. And I hope you will all be able to join us! So again, I personally want to express my thanks today to our Holy Father Pope Francis and to his Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre. It is a wonderful day for all of us, and especially for Bishop-elect Trudeau and his family. I thank you all for being with us to share in our joy and gratitude. May God bless you and your families!
