PATRON SAINT OF CANCER PATIENTS Friday, January 5, 2018 at 6:30 PM
Beginning January 2018, we will start a new prayer list of names to be prayed over during the St. Peregrine novena. The current names have been placed at the Shrine of St. Peregrine located in Mission San Juan Capistrano. If you would like to have your family member or friend remain on the list for next year or if you would like to add a new name for us to pray for during the St. Peregrine Devotion, please feel free to call the Parish Office at (562) 424-8595 with Names (*last name is optional).
Saint Peregrine is the patron saint of Cancer patients and we will be praying through the intercession of St. Peregrine for those who have Cancer and those who are Cancer survivors.
All are welcome to join us. The novena is every First Friday of the month at 6:30 PM, during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament here at St. Barnabas Church.

Christmas message from Fr. Antony Dear Parishioners,
The Gospel from the midnight Mass on this Christmas recounts that the angel of the Lord announced to the shepherds “I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.” In this, we witness the love of God the Father is made manifest to us in the wonderful gift of His Son, Jesus. With the angels in Bethlehem, our faith moves us to sing: “Glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth!” The shepherds came and adored the newborn Savior in the manger. Let us imitate them to worship and welcome Jesus in the manger of our hearts. God the Father has sent His only Son Jesus to us. He is true God who became true Man. He came to reveal perfectly God’s truth and love, who died and rose for our salvation, and who founded a Church where His presence continues in both Word and Sacrament. Reflect and treasure on the gift of Jesus, and actively engage in professing our faith in Him. May I encourage all of us to continue to live in the spirit of Christmas each day. Let us reflect on how to better treasure this gift each day by making prayer a critical part of our life, by continuing to read Sacred Scripture and the teachings of our Church, by having a stronger devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Mass, by regularly making a self-examination of conscience and going to Confession, and reaching out to those in need. May such reflections move us to an even more intimate relationship with our Lord in the coming year. I am glad that we have been reflecting on the mystery of Jesus coming to us by focusing on the mysteries of the rosaries all through this year in our parish. We have had many spiritually enlightening talks and activities that have deepened our understanding of the mysteries of the Rosary. We have made every attempt to pray the rosary as well. Let us continue to cherish this faith tradition and make every effort to sustain the habit of praying the rosary daily. Christmas has a way of bringing to Church individuals and families who, for various reasons, have not been to Mass or the Sacraments for months or years. It is a wonderful and grace-filled opportunity to put aside past differences and old habits, and begin a new prayerful relationship with the Lord and His Church community. It is my great joy to extend to all our sisters and brothers an open and grateful heart of welcome. Together, may we grow in strength and grace to know and celebrate God’s presence in our lives through the Sacraments which Jesus has entrusted to his Church. As your pastor, I treasure each and every one of you as a tremendous gift from God to our parish. I appreciate the commitment, dedication, sacrifices, and hard work you have shown to make our parish a beacon of Christ’s love. In particular, I thank those who serve in the Pastoral and Finance councils, and in all of our ministries and organizations, and our wonderful school. They have dedicated their precious time, talent and treasure to serve our parish. I truly appreciate their commitment and generosity. On behalf of Fr. Jesus' coming is an invitation to conversion, Pope Francis says by Elise Harris Vatican City, Dec 26, 2017 / 09:24 am (EWTN News/CNA) On Tuesday Pope Francis said there is a strong link between the death of St. Stephen, the Church's first martyr, and the birth of Christ, who came to offer message that is often uncomfortable and calls us to convert. “Jesus' message is uncomfortable and inconvenient for us, because it challenges worldly religious power and provokes consciences,” the Pope said Dec. 26, adding that after his coming, “it's necessary to convert, to change mentality, to renounce thinking like before...to convert.” Speaking to pilgrims present in St. Peter's Square during his Angelus address for the feast of St. Stephen, which is celebrated the day after Christmas, the Pope noted how it might seem like there is no relation between Jesus' birth and Stephen's death, however, “there is a strong link.” When he preached, Stephen put the leaders of the people “into crisis,” Francis said, because “he firmly believed and professed the new presence of God among men.” In telling the leaders at the time that Jesus would destroy the temple and change the customs that Moses handed down to them, Stephen understood that “the true temple of God is now Jesus, eternal Word come to live in our midst, (who) became like us in all things, apart from sin.” Despite the accusation that he was preaching the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem and therefore facing death, Stephen stayed “anchored” in the message of Jesus until his last breath, with his final prayers being “Lord Jesus, welcome my spirit” and “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” These two prayers, Pope Francis said, are “a faithful echo” of those said by Jesus on the cross, when he prays: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit,” and
“Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” “These words of Stephen were only possible because the Son of God came to earth and died and rose for us,” he said, adding that before this happened, “they were humanly impossible expressions.” The Pope then noted that the Risen Christ is the only mediator between God and man, and he intercedes for us not just at our death, as he did for St. Stephen, but in every moment of our lives. “Without him, we can do nothing,” Francis said, explaining that as our mediator, Jesus reconciles us not only with God the Father, but also with each other. “(Jesus) is the font of love, which opens us to communion with brothers, to love each other, removing every conflict and resentment,” he said, adding that “resentments are an ugly thing, they do so much harm and the do us so much harm!” This, he said, is the miracle of Jesus: that he removes these resentments and “makes it so that we love each other.” Francis closed his address asking that Jesus, who was born for each of us, would help us to assume “this dual attitude of trust in the Father and love of neighbor; it is an attitude that transforms life and makes it more beautiful and more fruitful.” He also prayed that Mary would help us to welcome Jesus as the Lord of our lives and “to become his courageous witnesses, ready to personally pay the price of fidelity to the Gospel.” After leading pilgrims in the traditional Angelus prayer, the Pope offered a word of thanks for all the well-wishes he has received in recent weeks. “I express to everyone my gratitude, especially for the gift of prayer. Thank you so much!” he said, adding that “the Lord will reward your generosity!”

There’s no more unusual setting to celebrate today’s Feast of the Holy Family than Barcelona, Spain and the towering unfinished sandcastle known officially as the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia. In 1882, the plan was hatched to build a vast place of worship in reparation for the revolutionary and liberal leanings of the city. The modern artist Antoni Gaudi dedicated his life to the project, living in the building, attending Mass daily, and giving up his personal wealth. When people pressed him to pick up the pace, he responded, “My client is not in a hurry.” (Gaudi’s cause for beatification is moving along, and he could be the first professional artist and architect to be beatified.) The Spanish Civil War, a disaster for the Catholic Church in which thousands of priests, brothers, and nuns were murdered, halted work in 1935. In the 1950s work began anew, speeded up by computers in the 1980s. Still, the final stage of construction is not due to end until 2026. If the original methods had stayed in place, it would take several hundred more years to complete the plan. So far there are eight towers, with four to go. The highest steeple is three feet shorter than the nearest hill, since the architect didn’t want his work to surpass God’s artistry. The three faces of the basilica each have three doors, with the faces named Passion, Nativity, and Grace. The interior is crammed with geometric figures that almost seem to spin, crazy-quilt windows, spiral staircases, and jumbles of statues and figures. Although inspired by ancient Gothic cathedrals, the style is called Expressionist, and very little is left unexpressed by the masonry.
